Very nice place to eat. I had southern fried chicken. Cooked perfectly, moist inside, crispy outside. Wife had pork tenderloin. Again, cooked perfectly.
Service and food were excellent. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived. Maitre d was wonderful as was the server. Both made the evening special.
The food wasn’t as good as we were hoping. The crawfish étouffée was good, if not a tad salty. The pimento cheese appetizer was just a bowl of cheese, that was odd, and the cinnamon ice cream was way too sweet.
The Swamp Fox just didn’t live up to the hype it had around it. It’s not as bad as Hyman’s, but it’s no Revival.
This is a great restaurant with fantastic food. It is a hidden gem because locals mostly dine at this restaurant. The prices are wonderful.
We spent a week in Charleston at the Francis Marion Hotel which houses the Swamp Fox Restaurant. During our stay we had 3-4 occasions to eat there for lunch and for dinner. On busy nights the bar is full and the place gets pretty LOUD! Not the place to enjoy an "intimate" dinner by any means. On less busy nights, the restaurant is uncrowded, cozy, and serves up delicious southern foods. The ambiance of the restaurant could use improvement, but it is comfortable and has a sharp and attentive wait staff!!
If you are a fan of collard greens (YUM), they serve up some of the best. Also, we enjoyed the fried green tomato sandwich!!
Recommend this place, but not for intimate evening. Is great for lunch or a standard dinner for groups.
Overall, we enjoyed the experience. Service was very good, food was OK. I had the salmon and my wife the fried chicken.
Our waitress was most understanding as we waited for the third member of our group to join us, and then allowed us to continue to visit after we had finished eating without any overt or subtle hints suggesting we leave. We will be back!!!
Restaurant needs some updating, it was not what I was expecting for King Street or the prices.
Dirty dishes were sitting around when we got there (in other tables) and were never bussed.
Ran out of the ingredients for one of the most popular cocktails (we were there at 7pm!).
Most likely won’t be back as there are much better choices in the area for the same price.
Signature shecrab soup was so,so. Served on the cold side which made it thick with flour.
Good food, atmosphere, and staff..just not enough staff ...
We are locals and normally cook dinner at home for visiting family but this was the every-other in-laws Christmas so we decided to eat out. The restaurant was busy, being one of only a few that was open on Christmas night. We had reservations but encountered a short wait before being seated. We could have had a drink at the bar through which one enters the restaurant, but instead used that time to review the menu while listening to some excellent music the pianist unobtrusively provided. Our table was in a snug corner just across from the kitchen. Our waiter, Brendan, was very knowledgeable, and helped guide our selections from the menu. He gave just the right amount of attention as he checked in on us during our meal. The food was great, especially the fried green tomatoes, a bib salad, and salmon (cooked perfectly with a lightly glazed crust over tender steaming innards) served with mashed sweet potatoes and a bed of collard greens. The Napa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon nicely complemented the meal and it was quite reasonable in cost, especially when so many of the peninsula’s restaurants overprice their wines. We decided against dessert to get an early start on New Year’s resolutions, but Brendan brought us a butter cake topped with vanilla ice cream to help us forget the seating delay, and it was too much to resist! This is a lovely restaurant located just inside the Francis Marion Hotel, conveniently located at the corner of King and Calhoun, with an adjacent parking deck. We’ll definitely be back. Bon appétit!
The food was just OK, some of it came out cold or with the wrong sides. I assume they weren’t staffed properly or managed well for our Christmas meal. I wouldn’t go back to try again and cannot recommend it.
Wonderful low country menu with wonderful service and ambiance.
Never go to Charleston without a stop at the Swamp Fox-great food and service
Food was undercooked and not good
We really enjoyed our dinner here! All our food was delicious and I especially loved the crab dip in a bread bowl. Our server was great - friendly and attentive. They also had live piano music which added a lovely holiday feel. We would definitely come back!
Most of the food was very good but the service at the table was poor. It was a buffet so our old plates should have been picked up and never got picked. I don’t understand a 18 % automatic tip for a buffet. Most of the food was excellent except the fish was horribly over cooked . Would not recommend
I dined solo for Thanksgiving and very much enjoyed the buffet and excellent service offered by all the staff.
Outstanding food and service. I had the salmon served crispy over chunks of sweet potato, wilted kale, garlic, etc. - terrific. Excellent southern cuisine, served expertly.
The food is delicious and the price is great. It is a local favorite of mine.
Very goos service the waitress was helpful!
Food was ok notjunt special
Extremely slow breakfast service first morning.
Pleasant evening service by Rachael, food moderate.
Final morning super service breakfast from Lee.
Very good food. My steak came out cold but the server took it back for a warming with no issues. I think they waited too long for the potatoes that came with my steak as they were piping hot, so I suspect timing was the issue. But once everything came out it was very good; tender and delicious.
Had tried She crab soup, Small shrimp + grit, which was recommended and the crabcakes. They were very delicious. Thank you for the recommendations!
Had great lunch served by Loren and manager Monique! Po boy sandwich with local fried shrimps was so good.
Seamless, courteous efficient service.
All right diners raved about their food.
Prices were very reasonable.
Ambiance was wonderful.
The high ratings of the restaurant are well deserved.
Great food, excellent service, wonderful piano music in the background. Highly recommend this restaurant.
great food will go back great service lovely evening
The shrimp and grits were good, but the hush puppy appetizer was over cooked. The bacon jalepena syrup was good.
Excellent service. We will be back great for a group. Price was excellent value.
Lovely spot. Excellent service. There were four of us and each of us loved our dinner. Piano added to the experience. Good spot for relaxing conversation and lingering over a drink.
Food was delightful. The service was not bad, but was not the best it could have been, a little slow, and a slight mixup in the order, but aside from that it was a very good experience. I would certainly return.
This was our first time at the Swamp Fox. We were a little disappointed when walked in that it was next to the hotel, and not in the hotel. It had a busy, cafe type ambiance. What made me want to stay was the piano player. The music "saved" the atmosphere. The food was very good, and our waitress was great, however the service was too slow for each course. Even the cocktails took a while to come. Overall, it was good, and I'm glad I experienced it during restaurant week, otherwise I may have been more disappointed.
A fair price for the offerings. Good service and greet people.
Liz is a great server. Food was good and dining room has a good view of Marion square.
All excellent. Manager most kind and server very attentive. Blackened catfish was generous portion, perfectly prepared. Wife and son had steaks, also perfectly to order. Nice view of Marion Square from our window table. As fine as any restaurant on or near Bay Street.
Service was outstanding! Food was very good with very large portions. I probably should have shared a meal with my friend. Would highly recommend.
They properly charge my credit card for our meal. But they also put a second charge for someone else’s bill on my card. Now I will need to call my bank and go through the hassle of getting the second erroneous charge reversed. They were understaffed do my guess is that was the cause of the error.
If you’re looking for Southern hospitality & cooking, The Swamp Fox is the place to be in Charleston. Our family enjoyed dinner here while on vacation. We were expecting it to be a bit more upscale, however the atmosphere is pretty basic hotel restaurant. Service is friendly and attentive. The food is a fresh, inventive take on classic Southern cooking. Their Shrimp & Grits specialty is delicious, & I enjoyed the August Farmers market special.
I had read quite a number of reviews ranging from 5 to two stars and decided to give t a chance. We were seated quickly far away from the too loud piano player. Our Server was gracious, even when my wife returned a glass of wine for being too sour. My wife had the Bouillabaisse which had plenty of seafood and flavor. I cannot say the same for my Shrimp and Grits, it had a watery cheese sauce that tasted as it could have been made with Velveeta (not cheddar or something else deep and rich), which was not really incorporated into the grits. I have had much better in Charleston as well as other Cities in South Carolina. Sorry but I expected better.
