The Smoking Goat Restaurant
We waited a full hour past our reservation time, were given different stories about the cause of the delay, and were ultimately seated at a table squeezed in by the door. We were celebrating our daughter's birthday, it was really a bad evening. We were given gift cards as compensation but were told not to use them that evening, and after being seated, waited another 40 minutes for our food. Really disappointing.
Wonderful meal. Prix Fixe menu this Wednesday. Duck fat truffle fries were amazing. A great complement to the bone in NY Strip steak!
The food at the smoking goat is always wonderful. That’s what brings us back.
Waited 45 min even though we made reservation. Guess it’s a busy night for them
Perfectly crafted menu if French classics and contemporary items
First visit and we were greeted warmly and seated right away. Then we were not served any bread just tap water. Waited 15-20 minutes for our appetizers which were delicious. The food was good but small portions. The price for 2 was $200 and they don’t have cocktails ($6 for Ginger Ale). Not a good value and the food isn’t good enough to lure me back. I’ll pass
10 of 10 would recommend, the food was amazing and the wine was just right for us.
Yes I would, just wish the staff was a little more friendly
Valentine’s Day is never a great experience in a restaurant. Dinner felt a little rushed. The waiter was curt. The food was either cold or microwave hot. I would try the restaurant again but maybe not on Valentine’s Day.
I’ve been to the smoking goat before but this time the food was exceptional I had the steak on Valentine’s Day and it was to die for definitely will be back sooner than later I highly recommend it
Excellent service and food . Our server Matthew was great
It was an amazing dinner, we have been before and love the food. The only issue we had was that our waiter was a little all over the place. We asked for our desserts 20minutes before we had to leave and they still didn’t come in time. But overall the experience was amazing.
Great everything! Made my Birthday! This is the second birthday dinner I enjoyed at Smoking Goat - and it was fabulous AGAIN!
I dined alone facing the kitchen. The scallops were delicious, and they had a prime rib cooling on the counter. Since it was the special, when they cut it, they gave me and the person next to me a small sample, which was really nice, and it was good. I had really debated on ordering that or the scallops. The person at the kitchen counter was very nice and showed us and told us about the dishes as they came out. My actual server was a bit rushed and awkwardly short tempered with the other staff, and didn’t spend much time with me. My experience was made by the man bringing the food out from the kitchen, and one of the chefs who was very nice as well. I decided to take the goat cheesecake home with me for later, and it was amaaaaaazing.
I recently returned from a 9-month deployment to the Middle East and during my time away, The Smoking Goat always came up on Facebook. I was stationed in an isolated and austere environment with horrendous food being served to us, so I would take pictures of Chef Piehl’s dishes and just dream that I would soon be home to enjoy one of his creations. My wife’s birthday was the day after I returned from deployment and the Smoking Goat was my choice to celebrate both events. Another great experience at your establishment! Thank you!
We were so disappointed with our dining experience at Smoking Goat as we brought out of town guests to join us for the Wednesday, three-course $40 menu. We have previously dined before and were excited to share this dining establishment with guests. However, the service was just awful. The waiter could not get our order correct as he had to return twice to confirm our meals. We only saw him once during the entire meal besides the two times we had to request for him to come to our table. After waiting a long time and flagging down a different waiter as our waiter was no where to be seen, it appeared our dessert order was never placed as we saw our waiter arguing with the food runner about our dessert. After dessert and another long wait, we had to ask the food runner to send the waiter over with our bill. We asked him to split the dining checks and again he could not complete this simple task. The poor service ruined the overall dining experience. We would not recommend this restaurant.
Delicious food! Can't wait to go again, and great gluten-free options!
We recently tried during Restaurant Week a French Bistro nearby and we disappointed, BUT Smoking Goat Restaurant made us grin ear to ear. We were greeted warmly, service was top-notch throughout the meal, and a lively spirit reigned. The food was memorable from the onion soup with the best broth I have every tasted, to the mouthwatering escargot, to the flavorful ribeye steak done just as asked, to the superb melding of flavors for the salmon entree -- celery root puree, spinach, green lentils, and beurre blanc sauce atop the salmon -- I even wanted to lick the plate, to the desserts of flourless chocolate cake and creme brûlée. Even the Kir Royal had just the right amount of cassis. I only wish the music was a bit more soothing rather than rocking.
Understandably busy because of restaurant week, but we were seated 30 minutes after our reservation appointment. The service was poor, it seemed as if they were using us out of the restaurant when it turned 10:30pm because they had boxed up our desserts to go and did not consult all of us before. The food was good, I would just recommend not going when its busy.
The food was excellent the service impeccable. We will go back.
I have a moderate retirement, so I want the MAX for my restaurant buck. The GOAT offered a $40 restaurant week special but if you wanted certain items from that menu, there was an additional charge for that specific (octopus/steak) item. I say, if you offer a $40 menu, it should remain at $40. Additionally, I find it difficult—NOT IMPOSSIBLE—to purchase wine that has a value of $40+. I purchased the least inexpensive bottle (at $40), and it was rather unremarkable. I truly believe the owner can offer one or 2 less expensive bottles ($35), where they still make a profit. I wanted to bring my own bottle, but when the corking fee was revealed to be $25, I left that bottle at home. IF I return I will drink my bottle BEFORE the meal, and enjoy a meal where I don't have to add $55 to my bill. I guess BOTH of us lessen the experience (the GOAT doesn't get to pocket the wine mark-up and I don't enjoy wine during my meal).
Excellent service and the food was delicious
Food was good Compared to other restaurants at the same price point, this was on the lower end.
Food was fantastic! I’ve already recommended The Smoking Goat to several friends before writing this review. Things they can improve on: wait times- We had to wait 25 mins for our reserved table, and we were starving!! I wish there was bread on the table to tie us over. The restaurant was slammed- but why weren’t they prepared since it was a Friday night and it was restaurant week?! Very loud. But we will go back simply because the food was amazing!
Took my wife for her birthday but didn't realize it was Restaurant Week until we arrived. They only were offerring a fixed price limited menu. The service was extremely rushed, including my wife's entree arriving while she was still eating her first course. We were in and out in about an hour so not the relaxing birthday dinner we were expecting.
Don’t think I’ll be back! Service was good. Food was not. fries were cold. Chicken and pork chop felt basic.
It was a great atmosphere and incredible food. Will definitely be back
Awesome. Hands down.
The hostess and manager were amazing. I had to make several last minute changes and they were so accommodating and friendly. The food was top notch as always. But our waiter was brisk, impatient and rude when it came time to pay the bill. It kind of put a damper on the end of the meal but I understand he wanted to leave which can be frustrating when you have one table left. It would have been much better if he had just asked us to close out so he could finish up, which is totally understandable, but being rude is not.
Food was yummy but the service was very dry and impersonal. We felt very rushed. I didn’t like that very much.
took part in Restaurant Week. overall, value for 3 courses was fair, but we got charged for an extra entree we never ordered. cocktails were made weak and a bit pricey for what we got. there was one server to our area who seemed to be spread thin. nobody really came around to check on us during/after our meal. we felt a little rushed. unfortunately, we didn’t notice the extra $20 entree charge until we left.
Everything about this place is so pleasing to all the senses! The location (North Park) is a walk-friendly neighborhood. The greeting from our hostess was pleasant. The choices for the Restaurant Week menu were just enough to give variety but not overwhelming. Everyone seemed to be working together to ensure our food was still hot when it reached us and any needs met .
Went for the SDRW. Servers were accommodating and food was of high quality. Will visit again!
This was for restaurant week. If you are going to showcase your place then staff it up!
Our first visit to The Smoking Goat did not disappoint. We went the first night of restaurant week, and despite being quite busy, the server was attentive to our table. Every single dish was very good. Would love to have the recipe for the goat cheesecake!
First time for us at this restaurant. There were 4 of us for Restaurant Week. Excellent 3-course menu, outstanding food! Wine list was a little pricey, but overall a great experience.
Had a great experience. The waiter was super enthusiastic and recommended the prime rib. One of the best prime rib I ever had. Found out they have it every Friday and Saturday’s. I got lucky. I was just visiting San Diego.
Terrific staff; they do not rush you and check on, clear plates, etc. before bringing the next dish out; they serve good fresh food with a pleasant setting but would recommend turning down the music a bit and selecting pieces with a more leisurely tone, even french songs, being that it's a bistro. As was, the music was more of a happy hour vibe vs. dining. I had a group of friends for a birthday celebration, and we had a marvelous time.
Amazing food and great service!
Great friendly and professional service.
Food was prepared well and with interesting ingredients. But not too exotic. A really great place for locals and visitors alike. Also wine menu was very outstanding for the value
