About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
The Smoking Goat is an award-winning California-French bistro located in the heart of North Park, San Diego. We have received the Gold Medallion for the best French Bistro in San Diego three years running.

Inspired by his European Farm-to-Table up-bringing and culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, Executive Chef and Owner Fred Piehl, marries classic French cuisine with the bounty of San Diego in a way that is rustic, yet refined, imaginative, yet unpretentious.

The dinners served feature in-season local, sustainable and organic ingredients and provide guests with a unique culinary experience, reminiscent of the European countryside.

Boasting a carefully selected wine and beer list and chef and bartender attention to select spirits to create craft house cocktails, The Smoking Goat assures there is always the correct pairing available.

Have been here before and loved the food and service. However, something happened to their food and service since. I went to dinner to celebrate my birthday and spent $500+ dollars. I ordered the beet and burrata salad that was very good in taste, but very tiny in size for the price. The brie was also very small with very few crostini, so had to order more at an extra charge. My daughter and son ordered the salmon, and it tasted bad like it was old from the freezer. It was so bad that my daughter spit it out and didn't eat it. My husband told the waiter about the Salmon, and the only reply was that they will tell the cook. My husband had a NY steak well done that was extremely overcooked and dry with a bad taste like it was also old. His fries were also overcooked, dry and burnt, and served with cheese and truffle after he had asked for plain fries. They took back his steak with fries and replated the steak by itself in a small plate and brought it back to him, leaving behind the bordelaise sauce in the old plate. Eventually, he received his fries in a separate small plate after his steak was cold. So he was eating from two small plates. I'm not sure why they couldn't bring back steak and new fries together at the same time to begin with. Also, we were never offered bread to start, which I did not see in their menu, so assumed they didn'thave any. However, when I received my pasta dish, I thought to ask if they had any bread. Waitress said yes, so she placed an order. However, by the time they brought the bread, I was already done with the pasta, even though I stalled for the bread. It would have been great to get bread since the beginning upon arrival or at least on time with the pasta. We also had to ask for drink refills that never arrived. Two bottles of water also ran out and were not refilled. After paying the bill, a paper review was filled out and read by the waitress, who made no comment or attempt to repair. Not going back ever.

We had a great dinner for 3 on a Saturday night before our 8 pm show at the Old Globe. Our reservations were for 5:45 pm and we were seated promptly. Parking was a bit of a challenge in the area so we all walked in a different times but I was the first to arrive and they still sat me right away, we were greeted, offered water, and then drinks soon thereafter. Their dinner rush had not yet started. We never felt rushed. We enjoyed a filet mignon tartare and the cauliflower for an appetizer and we each had different entrees - the steak frites, the Duroc pork chop, and the Jidori chicken with a side of the duck fat fries. Everyone's dish was cooked to perfection. We had the Griddled Banana Bread for dessert and it was divine. Everything was truly outstanding. If I had to choose one thing to improve upon, I'd say that the drinks from the bar took longer than I would have expected, but I think there was only 1 bartender and it wasn't anything that broke my experience. I highly recommend The Smoking Goat, especially for a pre-show dinner, as the theatre is less than a 10-minute drive away.

Great food, service and ambiance, all the time! The baked brie is amazing. The banana bread to end the meal is also amazing. There are so many great options for the main course, just depending on what you like.

The food was delicious, but the price was exorbitant. This is one of the reasons why I prefer to cook at home for myself and my wife. I’ve made similar dishes at a fraction of the cost. It’s absurd that a restaurant would charge such a high price for food that uses seed oils to cut costs. The restaurant was pleasant, and the staff was friendly, but smiles don’t necessarily make up for the high price. If I’m going to spend $170, I expect no canola oil and high-quality olive oil. Seed oils have been linked to health problems, and I can’t bring myself to recommend a restaurant that uses low-quality ingredients that cause those issues. It’s ridiculous that someone would pay that much money just to harm their health. Please use ingredients to justify the price.

Decent food but faux French. Terrible wine list as well. Service was great and they were working hard as they were short staffed. Won’t be back

My girlfriend and I had an amazing dining experience at the smoking Goat. Kendra was our server and she made our experience over the top. She had great recommendations and was very professional and friendly. It was a Tuesday evening, and we had the tables near the bar all to ourselves. The food and drinks were super delicious. Even the music that was playing was cool. We will be making this a go to place from here on out. Cheers!

The food was fabulous- mussels, baked Brie and duck a La Orange. The two of us shared everything and still had plenty of food to take home for another meal. The portions were large and the prices fair for the high quality food. The service was exemplary. I can hardly wait to go back.
