The Russian House
I love this place! The drinks are awesome (favorite bartender in Austin!) and the food is delicious! For large groups it’s awesome to get your own room to hang out together.
It didn’t seem that the business had our reservation. The manager asked to confirm my name a couple times. He went to the back dining area to “check that our table was ready.” Then a server put some silverware down at a long table in the front, and led us there. It wasn’t the nice place-setting tables they have in back, where I’ve been sat every other time we came. In the past, they have offered a shot of vodka before the meal. This didn’t happen. There weren’t any paper menus for those on our party that didn’t have phones. The food was good, though the portions were smaller than expected.
A wonderful value with personal service and delicious unique food. We really enjoyed the elk dumplings, so we ordered 2 more dishes of it.
First timers with Russian food. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The ambiance was like at Grandma's house: warm and inviting. Loved the big selection of infused vodka's. Really fun and highly recommend the Holiday Duck Dinner, feels like a new tradition we need to incorporate for the festive season!
this was our second visit to the Russian House. it was not near the experience we had the first time. They made us move table after making a reservation, then had extremely slow service, as if they didn't want our business at all. The restaurant wasn't even half full...Our food came out in twenty minute increments, and no one seemed to care. He just said, "eh, we have too many orders".
wishing we could have our first experience again, which was great. this time, not so much
Went there for brunch, which was wonderful. Next time in the area, I will make it a point to book for dinner. My only disappointment, is that I was there on a Sunday and legally could not buy any of the infused vodka's to take home.
Get the golubsty. It’s delicious. And make a reservation with 5+ people so you can have one of the private rooms. They are so cozy!
Very disappointed with food quality. My dish was the last of the cabbage rolls and had zero sauce and was burned on the bottom. The fact the kitchen went that out and expected me to not notice is astounding. One person ordered schnitzel and it had no breading. Another ordered beef stroganoff and no egg noodles—instead it was rotini. The relish tray that they used to provide was slimmed down and had one green onion for six people. This place used to be one of our favorites but this trip was a disaster. Don’t know if it was an off night or if this is their new standard. The waiter felt bad but honestly the food situation isn’t the waitstaffs problem. Proceed with caution if you decide to go there.
Good food! Great ambiance! And, wonderful service. Vlad was super friendly and helpful … and also extremely attractive. Really rounded out the whole experience. 😉
Honestly I love Russian House. We have gone a number of times and recommend it to all of our friends. But this recent visit was terrible. And I truly think it was all because of our server. The servers are hit or miss for the most part. Some are fantastic, others are just average. But the server we had last night was honestly so rude. From the very first words he spoke to us, I could tell the evening was not going to be that fun. He was incredibly inattentive and spoke down to us. He even made a mistake that nobody cares about but he was so harsh to my friend and couldn’t just say sorry and own up to it. Nobody was rude to him either. It was such an awkward and uncomfortable experience. All of us felt that way. You could tell he didn’t want to be serving us. You could also barely get an order in. He would rush away so quickly and only checked on us a handful of times. It got to the point where my table started going to the bar directly for drinks because this guy was forgetting things and taking forever. This whole experience really put me off of going for a while. I know it didn’t leave a good impression on my friends who had never been there before. We go because it’s an experience and the staff are typically super social and helpful. But this… honestly this review is not doing how bad the service was justice.
Atmosphere is great! Service is excellent, very friendly staff. Food was hit or miss. The Dumplings were excellent ( lamb version and beef and pork version). The mains were mediocre ( we all had some sort of tandoori grill plate ). We had ice cream and 3 different type of cakes, with the honey cake as the standout. Would return
Food was good, service lukewarm. Not a bad experience, but service made it not as memorable as I had hoped.
The Russian House in Austin was perfect for our group of 8. We had some infused drinks at the bar before dinner and spent a wonderful almost 4 hour multi-course evening together.
tons of infused vodkas, great food, great for groups
My work crew came here for dinner this past Friday and it was the most fun meal experience ive probably ever had. Great place for special occasion/memorable evening with friends or coworkers. The bartender was the best and our server was really sweet and wanted to make sure we knew what we were ordering etc. WHAT TO KNOW: Come with patience and a sense of humor and adventure. We tried all kinds of things, some we liked, some we didn’t, but I knew it would be like that going in. Make sure to order a drink at the bar when you get there and bring it to your table, then order another round as soon as you sit down, or you’ll have a big gap between your first and second drink (lots of places are like this so NBD). What to order: for drinks, ask for the special color changing cocktail with the sweet pea/cucumber infused vodka and soda. It was AMAZING. The dill Infused vodka with the salmon caviar was recommended by our server and was a perfect combo. The BORSCH!!! So good!! I want some now!! The khinkali dumplings were so yummy AND very instagrammable. The julienne was also really good. The stroganoff was kind of tough so I’d skip that, but other folks liked it. That’s something I make regularly at home so I may be a little partial to my own recipe. All in all, it was the BEST meal experience and my group could not stop talking about it.
First time diner for Sunday brunch. Authentic food, premium vodka selections, attentive service, casual environment and a funky vibe.
Overall so great! The wall of vodka is so fun and the food is delicious. Bar service is great - the bartenders make solid recommendations. Be prepared to wait for food if you come in to dine. Table service isn’t the best, but the atmosphere and food are awesome.
Food was great. Love the drinks. Our server was excellent
Don’t be afraid to try everything! Service great - pelmini was so good!
Excellent service, great Russian ambiance, great people, excellent food!
We went to the Russian House for the first time on a Friday night. They immediately took us to a private room which was unexpected but nice. Our daughter was adopted from Russia so we wanted to try it. So glad we did! I had the hot borscht soup which was so good! Highly recommend. For my main course I got Beef Stroganoff. Again this dish didn’t disappoint. There were 5 of us and everyone enjoyed everything they had.
I had been wanting to come to this restaurant for several years and was not disappointed with the food and most of the decor. Our waitperson, Sergei, was extremely nice and informative but clearly run off his feet. As with most restaurants in Austin, there is not enough wait staff. We are older people who were celebrating a birthday, and were placed in the front room, next to the street. This turned out to be the 6th Street drinking room, which was not what we had in mind. I now know they have private dining snugs, as well as a more elegant restaurant area. I would have been much better pleased if we had been seated in one of those places but didn't know to ask for them. Our age alone should have clued someone that would have been a better place to seat us.
Interesting setting and really good food. The service wasn’t great and could have done without the fruit flies.
Great service and ambiance! Also, wait staff had great recommendations - appreciated their suggestions. Food was delicious!
We greatly enjoy the food and atmosphere of The Russian House. It also has very good service. This is our fourth time (a birthday celebration) and it never disappoints.
I love the Russian House. I've had small parties here in one of the private rooms. I've celebrated anniversaries and birthdays, and once even ate on Christmas.
The food is amazing. I always eat too much here! Caviar and herring, and my god, the soups. Last time I tried the Tabaka and it was delicious! Oh, and you want to try the vodka infusions! They are out of this world! I love the caramel one for after dinner.
The service feels very Russian - no one will be subservient - but they make sure you get what you want and always have the best suggestions.
But you are really coming for the atmosphere. When you come into the dining room you feel like you are entering a small house in Russia, complete with lace table coverings and chandlers.
Over all, one of my favorite places in all of Austin.
But be ready to get a Lyft home- we always end up drinking more than we planned! Hic!
Decided to go on Easter Sunday for a different brunch experience and we did get that. The food was interesting and mostly tasty. I was a bit concerned that it was a buffet. But they presented it safely. We were not greeted at the table and had to ask someone if we had a wait person. Probably will not go back.
Great authentic Russian cuisine and experience. Loved the traditional music. The food was delicious and the server was pleasent. Highly recommended this restaurant when visiting Austin!
If you're looking for something authentic Than This Is The Place. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The only complaint I have is that the service was really really slow, I'm talking three hour dinner.
The only down side was the inability to split checks. I put $800 on my card and others had to Venmo me. Not the most convenient.
We did not get waited on for more than 45 minutes and after we ask if we could order food they still did not wait on us so we left. Sorry because me and my wife really was looking forward to spending our anniversary there.
Food is excellent!
What an awesome experience!! The food was amazing. We ordered numerous things just to try as much as we could and it was all wonderful. Borsch was so delicious and the meats were terrific. Can’t wait to go there again.
Great food, not great service, kind of loud as it was full
We really enjoyed this restaurant, the food was great as was the service.
Loved the food, service was excellent,
Will be back when we are in town again!
Great new experience with traditional Russian cuisine. Staff was great and would recommend for anyone to try.
I loved this place! Such a gem with authentic food and great service
Such a fun place. A little chaotic, in a good way. Food is solid.
