With a reservation, or if allowed admission from the Bartender upstairs, you can experience The Rest. It is a subterranean gem that looks like a bar that Hemingway would have built. Dark wood, taxidermy, old books and plenty of good whiskey. Perfect place for privacy and escaping the world for a minute... Or hours.
Greta food in a fabulous atmosphere. Well worth your time and your dining dollar
The Rest is simply the go-to spot if you're looking for the best atmosphere, classic and modern cocktails that are carefully crafted by the most wonderful bartenders (or are they cocktail historians?) in town. Don't miss out on this place. Plus, where else do you get to choose a record to listen to while you dine? Oh, and order the beignets!
Heard a lot about this place. Was way excited to see what it was all about unfortunately we only stayed for a short time after getting food that was burnt. Beer options were good and setting was good but service and food was not what I expected.
Went there for Valentine’s Day. The atmosphere is really cool. It was a prefix menu, but we loved the choices. A great treat.
Great food. That night they only had a Prix Fixe dinner so we would like to go back and try their regular menu.
As always, the food was absolutely amazing, the drinks are top notch, and the wait staff is the best I’ve ever experienced. The atmosphere is a strange combination of rustic and cozy. The Rest is far and away my favorite place to have a laid-back evening out.
One of our favorite spots in SLC. While Bodega is small and loud, The Rest is an incredible oasis beneath. The menu is always great, with fantastic cocktails and food. The service has always been outstanding, toting the line between friendly and professional in a very balanced way. An absolute must in Salt Lake if you'r looking for an intimate dinner and drinks experience.
Birthday dinner. SO glad we were able to make a reservation on a Saturday night. Drinks are pricey, but well crafted and delicious! Had the steak, pasta and pork belly. All were adequately cooked and beautifully presented.
The Rest is lovely every time. I love the incentive rotating food and drink menus and the wonderful relaxed ambiance. I have loved everything I’ve dined on over the years of coming to The Rest and I see no reason to ever stop popping in for a moment and escaping the busy noisy world.
Fan of the secret entrance, eclectic decor and ambiance. Great place to have a unique dining experience and liked that we had to show our id's because that meant no family or kid distraction while we enjoyed dinner. Delicious, am recommending to friends.
I took some time too get the table even with reservation
The ambiance and quirkiness alone are worth a visit, and I'd recommend a cocktail or the charcuterie board. However, our three entrees weren't good, so the $208 final bill felt high for the value. In particular, my Korean short ribs were extremely greasy and chewy: I couldn't taste any of the usual delightful short rib flavor, because the grease was so heavy.
Every time I have a friend visiting from out of town I try to get a reservation at The Rest! The food and ambiance are amazing and always happy to see Louisa who’s happened to be our server every time I’ve gone. The charcuterie board is awesome (but a lot of food so come hungry) and the beer can chicken and paella are delicious too. If you’re looking at this, you may already know but make those reservations early!
Excellent service and cocktails. Good food, cool room.
thank you for a truly wonderful night!
Best dining/drinking experience in all of SLC!
My drink: absinthe. It was served the traditional way with a carafe of water that, with the valve slightly open, dripped water slowly onto a sugar cube perched on a perforated bridge which lay over a goblet with about 2” of absinthe in it. I had never had absinthe before and was fascinated by the ritual presentation. I love anise – based drinks. The knowledgeable server, and general information she offered, made my experience so enjoyable!
Entrees: My date ordered the butternut-crusted Seabass; I had the scallops, and we were both delighted with the tenderness of our seafood.
Dessert: The selection is limited but perfect – beignets, or beignets with coffee. The beignets come as a basket of four; We were happy with one apiece and took the remaining two with us in a box.
The portions are reasonable – not “large”, as some restaurant-goers have become used to. It was easy to eat everything on my plate without feeling ‘full’ or ‘stuffed’.
Much of the ambience at The Rest is created by entering through the street–level Bodega and being shown down the stairs through this door and that, to the below-ground Rest - Just as one would expect of a speakeasy. Be aware: The lighting is very low and we couldn’t read the menu without additional light from our cell phone’s flashlight app. The server offered us a mini lamp as a reading aid which still wasn’t quite sufficient for our 68-year-old eyes.
Seating: Make a reservation! The Rest has six booths, and a long bar. We came early (5:15) the day after Christmas and there were only two other customers who’d been previously seated (seating starts at 5 PM). Even as the evening went on and more customers came and the booths were filled, the noise level from their conversation was still subdued. My companion and I never had to raise our voices to hear each other over other conversation or kitchen noise. The Rest carefully creates and protects the speakeasy atmosphere.
Had a great time. Drinks were strong but very good.
We have been here before and loved every moment! The charcuterie board was wonderful and so were the drinks. The only downfall was the beer can chicken we all shared. It was VERY salty and we couldn't finish it.
We had a disappointing meal but good drinks. Otherwise fine. It smelled like it was in fire during various times while we were there.
Love the vibes and atmosphere. Wish the menu had more vegan options.
The flight of old fashioned drinks was great. One friend had a mixed cocktail with vodka/lemonade and it was very weak. The waitress said we could pick which bitter we could take home as a sample but she didn’t even give us a choice in the end and picked the samples herself.
We were there at opening and the only people in the place, so it was super quite. The drink menu is very fun, the food was okay(coming from foodies San Francisco and Austin).
I do plan on going back.
This is my favorite restaurant when I visit Salt Lake. Always great service and a very cool vibe.
This place does not disappoint! The ambiance is amazing, the service great and the food delicious!!! I took my partner there for his birthday and we not only had the entire back area to ourselves, but they also gave us desert on the house! We will be going back for every special occasion!
Oh! And the bartender, Spencer, up in the Bodega was awesome too!!!
Service is always a 10/10 and the ambiance feels like you're in another time all together. Great place to take a date or just get away for a night.
We loved the atmosphere at the Rest! Very neat little speakeasy type bar with great cocktails. We will definitely visit again when we find ourself in Salt Lake City!
I think that the combination of the quality of food, cocktails, ambiance and exceptional service is very hard to match. For what it offers, it is not very expensive either. Fantastic overall.
Awesome place for a special evening out. Food was amazing. Great vegetarian dish. According to my husband "best steak he's ever had".
The Rest is amazing. The ambiance is like sitting at a casual roof top dinner party with your closest friends except it’s not outdoors. There’s a warm, cozy, vibrant, laid back, sophisticated atmosphere. The record player plays THE BEST music. The food is AMAZING. The drinks are beautiful and well made. The staff is personable. This is hands down my favorite restaurant in SLC.
Fantastic service, ambiance, cocktails, and eats.
Really cool space and unique experience. I thought the music was a bit loud for my taste but I think it might have just been where we were sitting, felt more like a bar than a nice restaurant. I liked the Menu but was not blown away by the food, cocktails were very good though.
We had a party of 5, placed our reservation a month in advance and arrived 10 mins before our scheduled reservation. We didn't get seated until 20 mins after our reserved time. The entree that two of us ordered was already sold out as of (7:30 pm), so we chose different dishes. The dish I chose, came out 15 minutes after the the rest of the dishes that my table ordered and was extremely dry and was inedible. The staff did take it back and did not charge me, but because it was already so much later than the rest of my table, I did not request a different dish, I just shared food with my table. Such a disappointing experience especially since I had been looking forward to it trying The Rest for a long time now.
This is my new go to restaurant in Salt Lake City. From the moment they took us through the door into the speakeasy atmosphere, we were hooked. Great food, service and cocktails. I will be going back again and again. Just watching the bartenders was a show all in its own. We shared two entrees between 3 people with an appetizer and had more then enough. The eclectic decorated decor kept us finding new things to look at through out our meal and the album wall was a great way to listen to music. A must in you're in the area.
This is our favorite place to eat in SLC. Try the pork belly.
My wife and I cannot say enough about how much we love The Rest. It is by far one of our favorite restaurants to frequent for special occasions or date nights. It is on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. The ambiance is cozy and extremely fun, very much like how you would expect a "speak easy" style restaurant to be. The staff and bar tenders are always friendly, the food has so much unique and incredible flavors, and trying a "blind pig" customized to your taste is always an adventure. We will most likely be life time customers of theirs.
Sexy place to wine and dine. Best spot in salt lake city. Be sure to make a reservation and try the wagyu steak.
The food was fantastic. It was nice to be able to carry on a conversation without having to fight to be heard. Incredible atmosphere for a nice night out.
One starts out by entering a small bar (Bodega) at street level, then descends through a bricked staircase into a place that looks like a cross between a 1930's speakeasy and something out of a sci fi fantasy--in a good sense. Dim, attractive lighting, comfortable booths--and then it gets better. Friendly, knowledgable server (Matt), concise and great wine, beer and cocktail lists, plus a "we'll make what you want, just tell us ingredients" option. Variety of small plates, including pork belly, charcuterie, a plaintain dish and others, and a small but varied main course menu including NY strip, pork chop, beef ribs, beer can chicken (really), two kinds of paella, and others. Dessert featured two kinds of beignets. The food was superb, well-timed and very nicely presented--at very reasonable prices for what was served, the quality and the service. I kid my wife about dining in Utah and dining in "America." Well, The Rest would be competitive anywhere in America, and was far better than many Utah titular "fine dining" establishments. Certainly holds its own with Park City, We can't wait to go back.
