The Pirates' House

The entire family is sure to enjoy Savannah's most intriguing & historic restaurant. At the Pirates' House, our most precious treasure is the food. Situated in Trustees Garden, merely a scant block from the Savannah River, the Famous Pirates' House is the most historic spot in Georgia. The Herb House, erected in 1734, located inside the Pirates' House, is said to be the oldest house in Georgia. The Pirates' House first opened in 1753 as an inn for seafarers and fast became a meeting point for blood-thirsty pirates & sailors. Enthusiastically recommended by AAA, Food & Wine and Redbook.

My wife and I were celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary. Our evening at the Pirates House was very nice and the staff did a great job of serving us and making the evening delightful. It was an interesting touch reading all about the history of the place on the placemat and also talking to our server Courtney about the ghosts that are about.

My dish of shrimp and grits was so salty I could not eat it. My husbands pecan chicken was tasty. Fried green tomatoes were good. Server was attentive but not personable at all-felt like we were annoying him. Playing Pop music over sounds system, which felt very off for the atmosphere. House itself was neat as for the historical factor.

Family went for lunch at Pirate House and had a great meal. My only complaint would be with the buffet. They did not restock often enough and somethings were never replaced even though we were there early in the day. Also, the shrimp are NOT deveined even though our server said they were. We still had a wonderful lunch and enjoyed our time there.

The restaurant itself is awesome. You can tell it was an old house by all the rooms. We sat in the Captains Table room which was great. My issue with The Pirate’s House is that we had an 8:45 pm reservation on a Saturday evening. When we arrived we were greeted by the hostess but another server came out looked at her watch and mumbled something to the hostess. We were seated and greeted by our server. After our drink and food order were taken, she came back in about 5 minutes to ask if we wanted another drink since the bar was closing in 10 minutes. My friends and I looked at each other like “what?” She then said the restaurant closed at 9:30.. not sure why the bar would close before the restaurant was? Also, a 9:30 close is pretty early for a Saturday. We ordered another drink, our food came which was very good. About halfway through our meal, the server came back to see if we wanted dessert!! Obviously rushing us out. You never ask about dessert in the middle of dinner? My friends and I did like the food but the whole vibe of feeling rushed we didn’t like. The food is really hood- just be sure to go early!

The food was over cooked and tasteless. Waitress was nice. Open table said place had no reservations at all for the night but was all but empty when we got there. We were exhausted and didn’t feel like sending stuff back so let it go. Once back to our hotel we asked if this was just an off night and they said No, and that it’s not a place they typically recommend. History is interesting but save yourself the $100 plus for an entrée and a couple of drinks.

Our group got the lunch buffet, and it was very good. Only recommendation is advise against the pumpkin cake when choosing your dessert that comes with the buffet. It was frozen and dry, and obviously store-bought. Such a disappointment for a restaurant that used to be 5 star and offer fabulous desserts. The “pirate “ gave us a tour after lunch, which is always fun.

Cool old building but for some reason we were seated in a really tiny room that had no character or ambiance at all even though there was plenty of room in the other dining areas that much nicer and well-lit. The food was just so-so. Would not re-visit.

The food was great and the service was top notch. I highly recommend their award winning pecan topped fried chicken. Just be forewarned that the servings are HUGE. We were served four pieces of chicken each along with the sides and ended up taking half of it home. The calamari appetizer was very well prepared and tasty but in hindsight, we could have skipped it given the huge size of our main course as well as the bread basket of biscuits and cornbread which come complimentary with each dinner. We were lucky to be seat in the “Herb House” which was part of the original oldest house in Georgia. If you are ever in Savannah, hungry and enjoy pirate lore, check this place out!

Food was amazing as always! I got the seafood platter and the oysters were seasoned perfectly and not fried hard! Waitress was so helpful and fast. Our reservations were for 7pm but sat us as soon as we walked in!! We sat in Anne booneys room. Was loud due to alllllll the young kids running around(4) I wish they had sat us orrrr families separately so we could have enjoyed our meal quietly with all the other older couples. Other than the noise.. Everything was AMAZING

The hostess went to sit us and another screamed at her that that section was closed and she was taking a break. We got walked back to the stand to figure out another table. We finally got sat and it was a completely full room. Took 20 mins for the server to acknowledge us. Food was ok- not great.

We were there for a special Thanksgiving buffet. Aside from the usual holiday items we also had some seafood selections. We were seated in the captains room. The food was good and it was a huge selection. While likely not the finest dining experience in Savannah, it was fun, historical and the food was solidly good. Best for families, I’d say.

A pleasant Thanksgiving experience with a few glitches. The server Iris was wonderful. One of the most competent and attentive servers we have had in a long time. The first batch of baked oysters was great, but the second batch was served raw, without placing them under the broiler. I told a staff member and they left the raw oysters with the liquid topping sitting on the table for 30 minutes and I gave up. It was obvious that the raw oysters covered with a yellowish liquid guck were not how the final product should appear. I cannot imagine why anyone would take that tray out of the kitchen and place it on the the buffet table. The Harvest Salad was the surprise winner for tastiest and most original item on the buffet. The steamed chilled shrimp were perfect. The prime rib was beautiful, but the so-called carver cut it in very thin slices like a roast beef rather than a thicker -- as I asked -- prime rib style slice. When I said he did not follow my instructions to slice it thicker a third time, he replied that it "would be just as red." Of course it was still tasty, but did not have the same chewing texture experience since it was cut so thinly. I asked the young lady in charge of the turkey if there was any dark meat, she said it was mixed in with the chopped up and shredded meat on the cutting board [which was a strange way to serve turkey -- slices perhaps?]. I pointed out that it all looked like white breast meat, to which she replied, "we only have breast meat; but the dark meat is mixed into the breast meat." I understand they are young people with limited experience, but there were some serious basic comprehension issues with the carving staff. Given the high cost of food at the market, it is a great accomplishment that the Pirate's House can offer the buffet for 56 dollars. We were pleasantly surprised to the receive the commemorative glass as a gift for purchasing the Artillery Punch.

We went for an early dinner with our grandchildren, hoping to have somewhat of a "pirate" experience, but none was offered. We had to ask questions for anyone to tell us a little history about the place. The menu was pricey, so we decided to go with appetizer and salad and one entree. The salad was reasonably priced, at $10.50. We asked to add one crab cake to the salad and were stunned when the bill came and it was $16.00. We will not be going back to the Priate's House.
