The Old Clam House
clams, mussels, crab, shrimp in a zesty cioppino sauce
Crispy Crab Cakes
I have loved this place forever and will continue to love it. The service is always amazing and the food keeps me coming back.
We were the first diners of the Friday evening (5pm) in the restaurant. No one greeted us at the door. Finally a young waiter came & sat us in the bar area...back in the corner...even though we had made a reservation! Served warm clam broth soon after we sat down along with water. Our Crab sandwiches were a bit dry. Clam chowder was very good. Garlic bread was delicious...served sizzling o a special platter! Parking was difficult as there is only street parking. We had to park 3 blocks away which would have been a bit scary in the dark! Will we return?
Maybe for a late lunch!
This place never fails to come through. The service was spot on, and food came out hot and tasty making yet another group of happy diners. I will be back.
Went for an early dinner at the city's oldest seafood restaurant. It's a historic and classic eatery. Plenty of street parking available right outside the restaurant. Casual welcoming vibe was felt in the dining room. Walls were covered by traditional memorabilia. This place is an institution! Waitress offered a complimentary cup of warm clam broth to start the evening and I had a glass of Bargetto chardonnay wine to go with my meal. We chose a couple of entrees that were served for two persons. House-made crispy baked kettle bread was dense and very good. House Caesar salad with coutons, shaved Spanish Manchego cheese was fresh and crunchy. Next came a sizable portion of an iron skillet of roasted mussels and unshelled shrimps. A kettle of baked crispy chicken, corn, potatoes, carrots, onions and olives was dried and over-cooked. Both of us shared a tiramisu dessert. Lovely place to visit for great value and big portions. Service was attentive and efficient. We had too much food...leftovers doggy bagged home!
Birthday celebration and they treated the guest of honor to tiramisu dessert and lighted candles! Food and service was excellent. Great place to go for great San Francisco food!
Very good service good food.
Very good clam chowder, good service. Will return.
ATE AT THIS RESTAURANT 20 YEARS AGO. DISAPPOINTED WITH FOOD QUALITY ESPECIALLY THE CLAM CHOWDER - TOO LIQUIDY AND LACK OF FLAVOR! SERVICE WAS SLOW ESPECIALLY ONLY 2 OTHER TABLES OCCUPIED DURING LUNCH HOURS
Love the “booth for 6 “ in this SF history rich restaurant. Generous portions, many dishes share worthy. Really good service. Not fancy, comfortable and cozy family dinner!!
This is a great little seafood restaurant. It is unfortunately off the beaten track, near the Ceasar Chavez exit off Hwy 101. Hard to imagine it’s location [original building from 1861] was once on the bay shore. Worth the schlep to get there!
The food was delicious. I found the service inconsistent; however - it was a busy Saturday night. Would definitely come again!
Nice people nice place. Three food was excellent and the music was good. We were late but they accommodated us anyway at closing on Valentine's day.
We had a great experience. The food was fantastic, the service was very good, and the value was great. We definitely want to go back and would recommend it for anyone. Make sure you make your reservations though, it can get rather busy.
We love The Old Clam House. The food is always excellent, and the service is great. We LOVE the garlic noodles with crab and the sand dabs, and the clam juice and kettle bread are the BEST. We were hugely disappointed this time because the spinach salad we ALWAYS use to get was removed from the menu. That was a big bummer and I hope it will be put be back ON the menu. It is a big draw for us. PLEASE put the spinach salad back on the menu! PLEASE!!!!
I've been trying to get here to try the roasted garlic bread for two years - it did not disappoint. We actually had two orders between three of us - shame! Upon taking our order we were offered water and given a shot glass of warm clam juice - while I was skeptical, it was delicious. Just what I needed on a cold Friday night. This lead me to try the shooter which consisted of vodka, clam juice and bloody Mary mix and again - very good. I ordered the fritto misto and my friend ordered the crab enchiladas - both meals were delicious! I finished the night off with the blood orange mimosa. I can't wait to go back.
This place has amazing food and great service. Celebrated a birthday reservation was ready and it was a great time.
Food is very good. Service is excellent. Only problem is parking.
Good casual dining with a nostalgic fun atmosphere. Very helpful staff.
I tried The Old Claim House after not having been there for several years. I like the old SF feeling but the food was a real disappointment. The clam juice was a good intro, but not nearly the tasty treat I remembered. My crab salad was doused with far too much soy sauce, which totally overpowered the crab and left me with a lingering taste of salt. I'm glad to know that the place has survived in this ever-changing market, but they really need to improve the crab salad. Surprisingly for a seafood restaurant, my husband's steak was a much better pick.
Old SF! The Cioppino and garlic bread are the best!
Cesar with chicken was horrible!
pieces of chicken with skin and dry too!
I would definitely recommend. Food and service excellent.
Not their best night food wise and our waiter and bartender kept forgetting things even though it was a slow night.
Over priced and over cooked seafood with little seafood favors, I.e. made from frozen seafood.
New Year’s Eve.
Made a reservation but was empty when we got there.
The service was a little slow, had to ask for bread.
The food was excellent. Crab salad, crab sandwich,
Frito miso. Drinks were perfect.
Definitely will be back soon with out of town guests.
The seafood was excellent. Parking was quite difficult, so plan ahead for a little extra time. Location is very convenient for pop off pop on the freeway if heading to bay bridge from Daly City.
My partner and I have eaten here for years. Always a great experience. We ate here on Christmas night, and the only thing we would have done differently was the starter. We normally have the crab cakes, but we saw that on Christmas night they had Italian potstickers. We ordered those, and it was a big mistake. They were hard and chewy, and I got a bone in mine. I would not order those again.
I must say, however, that of all the dozens of meals I have eaten here, this was our only bad experience. As usual, the other food and service was excellent.
Christmas evening dinner
We love this place! It was the first time for all of us! No set menu on Christmas which we loved, the food was consistent, everyone enjoyed their meals! The service was excellent, Anna was our server! We would all come back again!!
Food was amazing, especially the crab. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone that hasn’t experienced it yet!
Will Be Back
Everything about the experience was very nice. It was Christmas day. The squid ink linguini with cioppino on top is fabulous and a huge portion.the crabcakes are quite diminutive but all crab and delicious. The caesar salad is unusual - built on a bed of pesto. Winelist is small but impressive with brands like Hoenig and Meiomi and very reasonably priced. This place retains a historic flavor and the fish is super fresh.
One of the best things we ever did was deciding to go to the Old Clam House for the holidays! Food is delicious, servers are friendly and helpful, everything was perfect! We'll be back soon.
Delicious meal for the family. Lots of nautical tchotchkes. We’ll be back!
Thanks to Dennis for accommodating our table request.
Didn’t intend on spending Christmas Day eating at the clam house... but I was memorable. Great food and great service. Might make this a tradition.
Another tasty meal at the San Francisco legend. The kettle of clams and crab sandwich are always excellent!
Great food - crab was delicious. Only one small problem, the waiter seemed rushed.
Crabwich had about a quarter size piece of crab on it. Very disappointing especially for the price.
Great sized portions and good food at a good price. The only challenge is finding parking in a sketchy neighborhood
Old school restaurant for crab, other seafood, and steak. Simple fair but done well for a great value. Our table had the crab feast which was super good and satisfying. For those looking for elegant fancy avant garde cuisine head to one of the posh places on Embarcadero. This is a San Francisco original which happens to be located in a non-trendy part of town. Love it.
