Conveniently located on the Nicollet Mall strip in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, we are only steps away from many hotels, Orchestra Hall, and just a few blocks from The Target Center, The Orpheum, Pantages, and State Theaters.
We went to The Newsroom for Valentines dinner. We had Kevin as our server and he was awesome! Our meal(s) were delicious. We had the Beet Salad (excellent) and the Meatloaf flight... all good. Such amazing pairings.
Food was great as always but the service was slower than normal. It certainly may have just been one of those nights, so I will certainly be back, but one strike is on the board.
Went there for an early dinner before the Valentine's Day rush hit. The ambiance is incredible as they sat us at a cozy table by the window where we could view the city bustle from the comfort of our personal nook. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We took every reccomendation that was given and we were never displeased. The Brie cheese curds with the blueberry compote were to die for! Cocktails were novel, crisp, and delicious. I highly recommend the peanut butter and jelly old fashion. The main courses were delightful. I had the Bouillabaisse over fresh polenta special and my significant other had the Reuben sandwich where the sauerkraut was made from, get this, fennel! Such an amazing meal was brought to a close by the delicious flavorings of the rootbeer cookies. We were amazed and completely satisfied with our experience. Definitely found our new favorite restaurant! If you want a classy delicious dinner that won't break the bank, with incredible ambiance and a spectacular wait staff, then The News Room is for you!
The sweet potato risotto with beef spare rib didn't seem to be prepared very well. The risotto was runny and the beef seemed overdone and small to me. The chocolate torte was a cold hunk and could have used some warming. The best part was the creamy ginger carrot soup. The server seemed in a rush.
Great spot for a pre-theater or sporting event dinner. Outstanding service. Food was great, served hot and was not overly salty. We'll be back,
We were really impressed by the menu and the food. The chef is really creative and talented. The restaurant has a casual vibe but the food was of fine dining level. What we didn’t like was that, although we were a couple with reservation, they placed us in the least quaint, noisiest room, with large group parties, tons of TVs and noise. The front and back rooms, which had plenty of tables available, would have been a much better experience. Still, we definitely recommend the place for grabbing dinner before going to MN Orchestra since it’s only a block away. Delicious food, easy to make a reservation, fair priced, and great service!
The restaurant was very quiet so we had a chance to have a good business discussion without shouting.
Food was good, wide variety for vegetarians and steak-lovers alike.
Service was very slow for so few customers in the restaurant
Great drink selections. Great food. Great service. We've already decided that we will be going back again.
Excellent food and our waiter was just great. Very attentive and accommodating.
Amazing food, some of the best I’ve had! The Brie cures and coffee burger are incredible, as was our waiter.
Food & service was excellent!
Great place to meet socially with friends or a quiet dinner with loved ones.
This is our second outing as a group and the food and staff were great! I have celiac and am so thankful to find a nice restaurant that is accommodating to my food needs. Great food and awesome staff!
Great service and excellent food.
We had a large group of 15 for a business meal. Server was fantastic and everyone was extremely satisfied with their meal and dining experience. Will definitely recommend for any size group. Very fun atmosphere:)
Food was fantastic. I had tortellini. More chicken than I expected. Sauce was excellent. Someone in my group ordered duck fried rice and it was delicious as well. Maple bacon old fashioned was a good choice for cold winter night. Great service from our attentive server. All around winner!
An excellent option for downtown dining, with an expansive menu and cocktail list.
I've found a new favorite place. The service was a bit slow--we were placed next to a party of about 8-10 who weren't quiet and were being served by our server, the noise level in general was a bit loud for our taste, and the bar was running slow, but the food was terrific!
Love this place. Great gluten free options. Coffee burger is the best!
Disappointing. We had theater tickets for 8:00 PM. Made reservations for 6:15 which should have been plenty of time. Took more than an hour to get our food. Much too long and we cut it close for our 8:00 play.
Very busy. Our server was swamped. Still no reason to not check on us, ask to refill drinks, water, etc. we had to wave her down to ask for refills, to bring salt and pepper, to check on the long wait for our food and finally for the the check. We ordered a
flatbread, Caesar salad and burger.
When the bill came, we were charged for an entree salad rather than the side salad we thought we’d ordered. Flagged down the server and questioned her since the salad was several dollars more than expected. We didn’t realize there were 2 different Caesar salads on the menu. Instead of adjusting the bill, our server just shrugged, said we got what we had ordered and walked away.
Overall a disappointing dining experience.
Seated and waited 10 minutes and nobody acknowledged us. Our server did not know it was his table. Had to go to the check in desk to get service. Definitely short staffed. Gave our drink order and food order at the same time. Over 10 minutes to get our drinks and another 30 minutes before the food arrived.
They did comp our drinks.
The food was way overpriced for the quality. I paid $60 for a very tough 6-oz filet that had no flavor, 3 scallops that were meh, and potatoes that were salty enough to raise anyone's blood pressure by 10 points. That said, the ambiance was good, as was the service. If they got a halfway decent chef, this would be a stellar place!
Loved every part of this place. Drinks were generous and food was amazing
Our food was not hot and thus unappealing. We needed to go to a show so did not have time to reorder
Don’t expect too much here. Waitress not willing to make dietary modifications for us and was all by the book. Read your newspaper menu and order at your own risk.
Great spot for dinner prior to a show at the Orpheum. Short walk and service was awesome. Waitress was very attentive. Food was awesome.
What a good restaurant! There were some customers in the restaurant and it wasn’t so bad at all. Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic.
Thanksgiving. Very enjoyable and will do this again.
We went for Thanksgiving dinner. We were not impressed with the food. The food was cold and there was a strange spice to some of the side items. Overall, the place is nice and the service was good. We were not impressed by the food.
We were there for Thanksgiving Dinner. Where were the mashed potatoes and the pumpkin pie????? The turkey was about 1/3 skin, the gravy described as "pork gravy" (??????), and the stuffing was just plain Not Good. In total, a disappointment.
I was sadly disappointed in my experience! I made a reservation days before our visit for a group of 10 and indicated We were celebrating 4 friends 50th birthdays. On the phone, I was told the restaurant would buy a dessert for the birthday girls. Upon arrival, the hostess walked us to our table - that was not set up or ready for 10 people and was located in a busy walk way. We asked to move to another table, but told it was saved for a reservation.
The food was fine. After dinner, the server asked if anyone wanted to order dessert - and left menus on the table. Another person from our party went to find the server and tell him that we have 4 birthday people - and he said they don't usually give a dessert for birthdays. I had to then go find him and tell him I was told on the phone that the birthday people would get a dessert - he said, fine, he will do that. I was not impressed at all. When I indicated on the reservation that we were celebrating a special occasion, it would have been nice to have that acknowledged by the host and the server. And when I spoke to the individual on the phone changing our reservation from 10 to 12 - it would have been nice if that would have been noted - rather than showing up and still showing 10 people in our party. Not going back there!
So disappointed! We have been coming here a few times a year for the past 4 years. The Newsroom has a great location and the decor is fun. But this past visit the food & service left so much to be desired. Our party of 7 came for breakfast before the Vikings game. We were given empty paper coffee cups and had to wait 7 minutes for coffee. It took over 1 hour for food to be served. When it arrived, it was cold. My omelette was thin as a crepe, the cheese was non existent but overfilled with stringy onions. How can you screw up an omelette ? No one felt happy about this experience and the bill was not cheap. My wife sent the GM an email but he didn’t bother to respond to her. Something has changed even since May and not for the better.
I would still recommend the news room because I’n hoping our experience wasn’t a common one there. The place was super cool, but it took 20 minutes just to get our drinks from the bar, and nearly an hour and a half to get our food. I have worked in the service industry for years so I am very understanding when things take a while when it’s really busy. But this was a whole difference level of waiting. Whether they were understaffed, had slow bartenders/kitchen staff, or our server was forgetful, I’ve never waited longer for food or drinks in my 35 years of life!
Service was exceptionally slow at 6:45 on Saturday night. Long time to take drink order and we ordered one app with our drinks that came second behind two other apps and before our drinks.
Excellent Entree Salads! Both of us ordered an entree salad and they were delicious. I had the Cobb salad; everything was fresh and the salad was large. We also shared the hummus appetizer. Tasty.
Service was slow even though there were few tables with guests. Breakfast potatoes were deep fried like steak fries. Won’t be coming back here.
really fun place - you could spend hours reading the walls!
great salads; in-and-out for lunch time - fast service
I have no complaints about anything in this restaurant! It was a WONDERFUL experience.
Loved the meatloaf flight, what a great idea. Overall very happy with the evening.
Service was lacking (our waitress was short with us and not attentive at all) and the food was good but pricey. Ambiance is too hyped up for what it was as well.
For a Sunday morning - service was very slow. I had a hamburger and it tasted awful and smelled "funny" or "off". Ate two bites of it and my fries and that was it. Waiter was OK (once he finally got to our table). I have been there before and love their fish and chips - but won't go back again.
