The Modern is a 2 Michelin-starred contemporary American restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art. Helmed by Executive Chef Abram Bissell, the restaurant features refined, playful dishes that highlight exceptional ingredients and seasonality in a $168 four-course menu and a $228 eight-course tasting menu. Lunch offers a $138 three-course menu or $178 six-course menu. Master Sommelier Michaël Engelmann's extensive selection of wines showcases exceptional diversity and value.

The Modern accepts reservations 28 days in advance. The restaurant also includes the vibrant and lively Bar Room (reservations encouraged), terrace for seasonal outdoor enjoyment, and bar & lounge to welcome walk-ins. The Kitchen Table offers a custom tasting menu for up to four guests in the heart of the restaurant's world-class kitchen.

Service was exceptional, food was way below expectations. Tiny portions, couldn’t find the asparagus in the scallop and asparagus dish and the poached chicken was poorly presented and tough. Will not return

We went to celebrate a birthday. The environment was nice , the wait staff was very polite and energetic. The sommelier was kind enough and helpful in recommending wines for our meal. The food was fine. Nothing was terribly impressive or stuck out as absolutely incredible. Most of it was a bit bland though we did like the hamachi quite a bit. The chef's apparent signature dish, the foie gras tart, was odd and had no flavor (and I actually like foie gras). The desserts and the wine were the best parts of the meal. The staff did bring a small cupcake at the end with a candle and "happy birthday" written in light chocolate on the plate but other than that, it was just fine.

We've been to The Modern many times when we go to New York because we know it will be a great meal; beautiful room, attentive service, but most importantly really good food. This meal exceeded our (already high) expectations: absolutely exquisite. The Lobster Fricassee with fava beans was the best lobster I've had, and the Passion Fruit Curd with Sweet Pea ice cream was not just incredibly creative but also mouthwateringly delicious (and also pretty to look at). We ate at two other well-known "foodie" New York restaurants this weekend, and The Modern put them to shame.

Lovely atmosphere and decor! Modern and elegant. We had 6-course tasting menu and for what we paid, food is really good. Will go back again, but probably not ordering tasting menu next time.

We had been to The Modern a few times before and were somewhat hesitant to go back after our last visit which was good but lacked the "wow" that we had always experienced before. Well, for us at least, the "wow" is back! We had the 7-course chef's tasting menu. From start to finish, each dish elicited a wow. Excellent wine pairings, attentive, friendly service.

I cannot say enough good things about the quality of service and menu at the Modern. Staff was attentive without hovering, thoughtful, and creative with the challenges we presented as diners (both of us have food allergies, which can make things complicated). We felt cared for and comfortable without sacrificing the high tone of the ambience. Absolute perfection start to finish.

Had an amazing meal. Food was stellar, service was good. A few service opportunities but did not really detract from the overall experience.
Service was attentive and genuine, however it took almost 15 minutes to be approached and offered water after initially seating. Bread service was poor- bread was cold and rock hard.
My date does not consume foie gras and the server was aware of this. She ordered the poached chicken which was served with a Chicken jus w/ foie gras. Luckily this was not an allergy and she was able to pick around and still enjoy.
Otherwise an excellent experience. Desserts were phenomenal.

Excellent food but quite expensive for what you get. Service is not very attentive, appears to be inexperienced, we were sitting unattended for almost 20 minutes in the beginning of the meal (no water/bread/AB), was much better afterwards. Tasting menu - for courses and four half-glasses or paired wine with 2 teas, while excellent quality food/innovative, feels overpriced (at $300/pp total -no tip restaurant) considering the overall experience and other option for fine dining in NYC .

The first day, we had been at Modern to celebrate my wife’s birthday! We liked so much that we return three days later for dinner! Those two occasions were great experience! It is a kind of restaurant I would always go.

This is our second visit to The Modern celebrating my bride’s birthday and at the last minute I called and asked if the chef’s/kitchen table was available and turns out it was. Would I do this again, probably not but it was a great one of a kind experience. We added the premium wine pairing to our celebration, sat back and enjoyed. Typically my reviews are about the food but this time it’s about the experience. I know we see kitchens on the food channel and it seems like it’s chaos but the kitchen at The Modern was spacious and operated like a fine tuned machine. THE FOOD AND WINE WERE SIMPLY FANTASTIC- RICH COMPLEX FLAVORS WITH PERFECTLY COMPLEMENTED WINE SELECTIONS. Each course was delivered by the sous chef that prepared it and the explained what went into its preparation. The head chef did mention that things are not always this calm, but you could hear the special instructions for each patron being incorporated into some of the preparations.

Our amateur cook son had joined us for the occasion and it came into his head that it would be amazing to plate a desert for his Mom’s birthday and we were shocked when it was made to happen. He was thrilled and found out how challenging it is to make those egg shaped scoops of ice cream. This was a great experience.

We love The Modern and enjoy introducing friends and family to this restaurant. We have had a romantic dinner for two here, we've had weekend brunch with friends after a tour through MoMA, and most recently brought family here for lovely lunch on a Friday afternoon. Everything is so well thought out - every detail is understated, elegant and of the highest quality without being stuffy, formal or pretentious. We love this place.

I had been to the Modern (Bar Area only) in the past and dinner was always on my agenda. My friend and I opted for the 4 course menu - I loved that the staff was very attentive and described each course in detail. Everything from the asparagus soup with the clarified butter (to die for!!!), honey glazed foie gras tart with rhubarb and to the coconut palette cleanser was phenomenal!! Overall, the dining experience was great and hats off to the Modern!

Our dinner at The Modern was very good but not excellent. There were some high notes, like the amuse bouche appetizer of asparagus broth with asparagus butter, the lobster with fava beans second course and all the dishes had excellent sauces. But there were several disappointments like the tough lamb saddle (in an excellent sauce), or the flavorless celutice (again, in an excellent sauce) and the bland carrot mousse cake. The service was very good and the atmosphere is quietly elegant. Overall a good meal but not really outstanding.
