The Mariner's Inn Ratings and Reviews
Although we were about 20min late from our 7pm reservation, (there were several open tables), we were there with friends so it was ok. Our male waiter was fantastic and I really enjoyed my Lighter Fare entree. My husband had a NY Strip and said it could have been a tad more done, but it was still tasty. Our onion straws for the appetizer were delicious! It's been a long time since our last visit and it didn't disappoint. We came because we both had a round disc for $10 off.
Food was very tasty. Service excellent and quick. Thought the glass of wine was on the skimpy size though. I read raves about the Pumpernickel rolls, but I really wasn't wowed by them. They had a oniony taste that I didn't like. So glad to get green beans plain. Other places add onions or tomatoes or bacon grease. I want to taste the green bean and I did here. Not many choices for wheat/tomato/potato allergies though. We had Grilled Walleye and Ragin Cajun Salmon. Large servings so only ate half and had other half next day. So that made meal cost reasonable.
Service and ambiance was nice. Food was good but not for the price. Have had fish frys
at other local places with just as good/better quality, good service and ambiance ....but not
as pricey. For the price I would expect better quality. Am not in favor of hash browns (or anything for that matter) served family style---simply cheapens the whole event.
Probably would not return for fish friday....maybe a steak, if that would be better than most
for the value.
There’s a good reason why this family owned restaurant has been around for 50 years ; the food is consistently excellent ! The ambiance is nautical and refined, yet casual. The place is cozy and welcoming to small or large groups. Our group recently ate there to celebrate a birthday and were treated royally. With all the new restaurants opening in Madison, it is easy to forget the tried and true; this one is definitely worth your consideration.
The only 'plaint was that the stuffed shrimp were a little overcooked. My Chef's Tenderloin was just right and delicious. The potatoes lived up to the hype. The bartender understands 'perfect' but got confused on 'neat' and wasn't clear about 'up.' Depending on how many dry Manhattans you want to drink, choose your ask carefully.
We enjoyed fish finger appetizer. I had the Cajun tenderloin and hash browns. It had great flavor and was very tender. We had a great server but was very busy. It would've been nice if the bartenders could have brought the drinks out once they were made because we were eating with nothing to drink until I requested them at the bar.
My steak was very good but our service person seemed very hurried and rushed. I burnt my finger on the serving platter when he served me and didn't even ask if I need anything for it. He didn't fill our drinks until we finally asked him. My co-workers' steak was not done to what he asked for and the service person didn't ask if our steaks were cooked to our preference. I travel a lot with work and when you say you specialize in steaks normally you are asked to either cut into your steak to check it or asked if they were cooked properly.
We went to Mariner's Inn after a UW football game. It was a beautiful fall day. Our cocktails at the bar were served quickly and with a smile. The brandy old fashioned was particularly good. We were given the option of dining outside and the area was nicely landscaped. Jacob was our service he was very helpful and attentive. We ordered the two different steak specials, a New York strip and a tenderloin. Both were good quality and cooked to order. We also had the clam chowder which was our favorite part of the meal. We would go again and are planning on trying their other two restaurants.
We were at Mariner's Inn for a Friday night fish fry. I had the fried fish and my wife had the broiled fish. The fried fish had too much batter on it. You could literally crack the breading and remove the fish. That also makes the fish greasy in my opinion. My wife enjoyed her broiled fish. The hash browns and clam chowder were also quite good.
My husband and I used to live in Madison and would go to the Mariners in for special occasions when we were young. We would have to save up to go there for special occasions. We have been married 30 years now and thought that would be the perfect place to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The food was as good as I remember, the staff was friendly and helpful and the view was great. Thanks for a good evening.
The Mariner's continues to be one of Madison's "gems". We were concerned about visiting on a Friday evening, fearing that it would be congested, noisy and not a relaxing experience. We were very pleasantly surprised. The bar staff was friendly, the wine was affordable and delicious, service was excellent, and the fish fry options were unique. We were able to converse with our friends over dinner, and enjoy the beautiful setting and atmosphere. All in all, a very pleasant evening and dining experience. Thanks, Mariner. After all your successful years, you're still one of Madison's very finest.
We were really let down. Our family went for the Friday fish fry. We waited 20 minutes for our food. The portions are very small. The three pieces of fish were the equivalent of eating 5 or 6 fish sticks. Most of the fish was breading. We will not be going back. Sad.
Wonderful food--the clam chowder is as good as they claim!! Great, friendly service. The fish fry was worth the trip.
The décor and the landscaping can definitely use an update. The front entrance is particularly unattractive. A little weeding and some freshening would go a long way to start a visit off right and improve the curb appeal.
