The Helmand Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The service was attentive and professional even though, as usual , the restaurant was crowded. They want you to enjoy their wonderful food. It’s hard to leave room for the excellent desserts but try not to miss having one. Good menu for vegetarians and non dining together.
I had no clue that it was Restaurant Week. I wanted to eat somewhere where my friend Mike and I could get our meat but our friend Beth had plenty of veggie options. I already have much love of Afghan meat from Mimi Kabab (and some of the other Pashtu places that are around D.C.) so I knew that I would like the fare. The appetizers were delicious. The meat was simply wonderful. I also enjoyed my dessert (though EVERYTHING is smothered in cardemum... not awful every once in awhile). My friend said it was the best birthday dinner he had in years so I was very very happy.
We had an ambivalent experience. The food was very good, but not spectacular. The noise level was deafening, to the point where the four of us really couldn't talk at all - this would have pretty much ruined our evening, even if everything else had been perfect. The service was spotty. The food came out very fast, but then, when we wanted to leave, it seemed like we waited forever to find our waiter to let him know. This was generally disappointing - I had visited the Helmand about ten years ago, and I had a much more positive experience back then.
Have previously visited the Helmand; however, when I went for New Years Eve, the service was exceptionally poor. We went at 6 PM, and the resturant did not seem to be overtly busy; however, that didn't stop the server from taking 10 minutes after giving our drinks to even return to take our order. The food came out in a reasonably timely manner, but after a bus boy took our empty plates, we were left sitting with literally nothing (except a to-go box) in front of us for at least 15 minutes--this was unacceptable. We ended up having to ask the bus boy for a dessert menu--we were looking forward to the hazelnut cake in advance; otherwise, we would not have ordered a dessert due to the poor quality of service (and frankly, the fear that it would add 45 minutes to our already too-long dinner). When we placed our dessert order, we also asked for the check--something that the server forgot to bring, and we had to remind him for when we finally glimpsed him 10 minutes later.
Hopefully this was a fluke, and we really enjoy the food that the Helmand serves, but this may put some doubt in our mind when we consider returning.
The food is delicious, the wait staff was attentive, and our food came very quickly. We would go more often but usually find it too noisy to be able to talk with others while eating.
However, we went very early and were able to have a lovely dinner without too much backgroup noise.
I strongly recommend it!
As always, the food was excellent. Unfortunately we had a waitress that seemed to be having a rough night. She forgot our order and we either got what we did not order or received nothing at all. She was unable to define the menu and even got our check wrong. When we asked for things such as a box or a cup of tea, she ignored us. Thank goodness for the busboys.
We love the Helmand and will go back, but they need to ensure that their waiters are better trained. A bad waiter can ruin the entire dining experience.
Having dined here over the decades very sporadically and always for a special occasion, the Helmand is consistently satisfying in every way. We were a group of 6 on Christmas Eve, seated promptly for our 7 pm reservation. Our server recommended the family style meal, an excellent wine and it was just right - a full 4 course meal for all and with leftovers. We look forward to going back more often than once a decade!
We were seated at our favorite round table on the side where noise level is a lot less. We ordered their very good Hinojosa Malbec & everyone including our non-wine drinkers enjoyed it. The appetizer banjan borwani was great with its delicious yogurt garlic sauce. The entrees from the vegetarian to the aushak and the lamb lawand pleased the crowd. And since 2 of the six dinershad a birthday that week , we were served delicious custard & fruit desserts along with a candle in each. Service was excellent as usual.
I had several family members in town and needed a place for a decent sized group with varying food preferences. I'd been to The Helmand before and thought it would be ideal. It was also close to Penn Station and some family members were catching a train later that night so it was convenient. The appetizers were delicious and the food came out very quickly! We were able to have good conversation and our server, Alice, was wonderful.
The Helmand is a treasure my husband and I cannot get enough of. The food is always delicious, and the service is always warm and impeccable. We've brought many friends and family here over the years, and even the least adventurous, most skeptical eaters have been won over. If you're on the fence about choosing this restaurant, do yourself a favor: just go for it and order a selection of appetizers. Wait to order an entree until after you've tried the appetizers and you'll be more comfortable exploring the entrees. My favorite dish is the Shaftalu Challow (always tender chicken breast with organic dried peach, honey, fresh ginger, turmeric, fresh tomato served with Afghan chopped salad and challow.) I feel so lucky to live within walking distance to this place!
