The General Public - San Antonio
Room was warm. Table service slow
Great place to eat for any occasion. Have been for lunch and happy hour before but this was my first brunch. So many great looking options that I'll have to come back numerous times just to try them all. I had the Shaksuka this time. First time I've ever had this dish and it was delicious.
Nice casual spot for date night.
With so many stellar food choices, The General Public is a "miss." The food is just adequate. The steak and blue cheese sandwich which was $18 was overpriced. The crab hushpuppies were boring. The roasted brussel sprouts and charred okra were decent but were served warm bordering room temp. The Crab cakes were probably the best thing we ordered. They had a decent amount of crab with a c in them. Service was good, no complaints there.
The brunch entrees & coffee wonderful. We enjoy the atmosphere and are always able to hold conversations without strain. I should mention that we have only been during brunch and have yet to experience the restaurant at night.
The food is always flavorful and plating is great.
I was slightly disappointed this visit when we were seated because we were a party of 4 with reservations and we were taken to a 4-top hightop table. The actual table would nicely accommodate 2 possibly 3 people (or 4 people who were only ordering drinks). The entire meal, we shifted our entree plates and 2 French presses.
Great place to eat but The noise level was a little too loud.
Way too noisy. Conversation impossible. Menu limited. Food just okay.
We really enjoyed the food but the service was not great. We had to get up to get our own silverware after asking twice. The workers all hung out behind the bar area and visited. I finally had to get up and walk back there and interrupt them to ask a question.
The wait staff and the bartender were outstanding.
The food was tasty and fresh. The grilled rosemary shrimp with mashed cauliflower grits was delicious. It was nice to have more interesting dishes to choose from in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.
First time here and was pleasantly surprised! Food was great; our waitress was great and very attentive. Everything was priced very well. Only complaint is the booths are too low for the tables and our seat was RIGHT by the front door and the sun reflected off the door into our eyes THE ENTIRE DINNER and there were no shades/ blinds/ curtains anything to block it.
Came here for a work brunch. We had some last minute people show up and the staff graciously accommodated our entire party!!
Food was not that great, ordered well done but it was med rear
Ask for Miguel - he was outstanding!
There isn’t much of a menu I think it’s more for people that want to drink. The meat and cheese plate was small and cost $12. The meat and cheese and baguette probably cost $2 if that.
New to the city and was shopping at the Rim. Made reservations at The General Republic. Food was so good! Especially the fried honey chicken! So tender and delicious!! The crab cakes and the bacon burger was....😋! Will definitely come back again!!
The appetizers were excellent! We tried 4 different offerings and will come back to try the others.
The food was decent but the service was pretty bad. It was a Monday night, hardly anyone there, and still took over half an hour to get ANY food, and then the starters came out only 10min before the entree. With so many options in that area, it is not a place I would rush back to.
Music was excessively loud for a restaurant but service and food are good
The shrimp and avocado salad was excellent. So was the service!!
Devin and Michael were great at serving the table that night. I was not sure of what drink I would want, told the server what I liked and the bartender made a great drink! I love being able to have something I’ve never had. The sundown drink was awesome as well. Will be coming back for group events as well as girls night or date night!
Took my mom here for brunch to start off our day of shopping and it was pretty great, our waiter was great and the environment was very comfortable. The food was enjoyable as well especially the hash au gratin!
The food was fantastic. We split the burrata and pistachio toast. The burrata was soft and creamy, the toast nice and crisp. The pistachios added a lovely crunch and great flavor.
We also had the shrimp and cauliflower "grits" which tasted great and the cauliflower had a really nice mouth feel.
Portion sizes were appropriate although the app and the entree were about the same size.
The service was terribly slow. The place was near-deserted at 7:30pm on a Sunday night, with maybe 2 other couples dining and at least 3 staff plus a manager on site. It took us almost 2 hours for just an app and an entree (which were delivered at the same time) plus cocktails. We had to flag down the server for our check and drink refills. Nobody checked on our water levels during the meal, either.
My pork was very over cooked.
Not adequately staffed. Got our order wrong. Miserable experience
We made a reservation for a Sunday evening at 7:30 post movie for my husband's birthday. We aren't from the area so reviews looked good and it was close to the movies.
Arrived right on time maybe a few minutes early. The restaurant had 3 tables with people, not busy. The hostess looked at us from the back of the restaurant and then continued for the next 5 minutes to ignore that we were there. We should have taken this as a sign. Finally she came over to tell us that she needed to cash out a table then she would find us table. A few minutes later she figured out how to put 5 people at a table for 4, add a chair. She said our waiter would be with us shortly....another 5 minutes pass.
The waiter finally came over to take a drink order (4 waters and a draft beer). 10 minutes later my husband went to the waiter who was at the back of the restaurant who was on his phone. When he saw my husband coming decided to get our water glasses out still hadn't entered the beer.
We decided to leave after 25 minutes wasted. So we cant rate the food because we didn't get any, but the service was ridiculous.
We went down the street to another restaurant (Russo's) and were seated and served drinks in less than 5 minutes.
Out of a few food options and drinks were SLOW to come out. Drink were OK...Brussels sprouts were great though!
Outstanding Hamburgers and grilled ham and cheese sandwich. The shrimp and crab roll was a little full but that's not a bad problem to have. Waitress was attentive and efficient. Nice place for lunch. Will definitely come back.
The food was OK. The General Manager was very nice and made a minus with some of the food a plus with the customer service. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant with minor reservations.
Went for dinner on Sat 7pm. Restaurant was nearly empty. Ordered cocktails that took nearly 20 min to get. Everyone liked their cocktails but was left wondering what took so long in an empty restaurant. Got some apps (meat board & shellfish) that were OK in taste but relatively small portions. Based on the dining experience so far, elected to go elsewhere in Rim for entrees. Can't strongly recommend.
I love the happy hour. It’s the best in San Antonio. The service is a bit slow if you are in a large group. It’s faster if you are at the bar. Good food and good drinks.
My friends and I really enjoyed the amazing happy hour and the food. We received great customer service. I will continue to be a customer of the General Public.
General Public is my husband's absolute favorite restaurant in San Antonio. Delicious food, great prices, energetic atmosphere!!
Great food, good for kids/families. Great and fast service.
Music too loud. Server did not know the menu.
I was disappointed from arrival to departure. We were ignored by the wait staff for five minutes, and normally I don't even write about that, but the place was nowhere near full and the staff had plenty of time to gather and chat at the food counter while I waited. I told my waitress that I wanted an Old Fashioned, but not the bizarre one listed on the menu with ingredients not normally in an Old Fashioned. She promised that I would get a normal Old Fashioned and said the house ones were good. When it arrived, I honestly thought I'd received someone else's Fireball. My Old Fashioned tasted like a cinnamon shot over ice. I took it back to the bar to exchange for my drink, only to be informed that this was the way they made Old Fashioneds, with Vermouth of all things, and that's how it was. I just wanted a normal Old Fashioned; why is this hard? Next, my tiny, flavorless oysters arrived. Enough said. My wife's crab hushpuppies were actually quite good, but not good enough to overcome the entirety of the experience. Will not return, and will actively recommend others not go.
Food was delicious. The crab hush puppies were a very unusual combination with powdered sugar and sweet butter but they were outstanding. Our server was fabulous.
The ambience is chic and the menu variety is great for brunch. Mimosa prices are not shabby either! I may give them another try because of the above despite the terrible service our party received.
Birthday brunch was a blast! $1 mimosas were delicious as well as the food! Well visit again!
