The French Gourmet
Our restaurant serves California-influenced French cuisine in our completely remodeled outdoor patio and limited indoor wine boutique, brand new menu and bar with signature craft cocktails. We are a long-time favorite of locals who appreciate the personal service and our extensive wine list. After more than four decades of serving our clients, it is as much an honor and a privilege, as it is a reassurance to know, that while culinary trends come and go, appreciation and dedication to quality endure.

Excellent service and phenomenal food. Great for a date night.
Our meals (one lamb and one duck entree) were delicious, but the service was a bit erratic. Bread was greatly delayed, though promised early. We ate inside, where the surroundings have greatly changed....marked by numerous wine racks all around the room. When we left, through the "back door," we saw the outdoor patio for the first time and were impressed by how much more open and inviting it appeared.
Love the patio, very European feeling which is great. Nice and quiet and reasonable pricing.
I thoroughly enjoyed lunch at The French Gourmet, as did my Birthday friend, the reason for the visit! I will be back with more Birthday friends!
Great offerings and reasonable prices. Delightful place to meet up and catch up!
I do love this restaurant. The food is delicious-a modest menu but great choices. The members of the wait staff are delightful and attentive and the ambiance is perfect, especially the outdoor section on a warm summer night. One of our favorites.
Peaceful dinner, friendly staff, good food and wine.
Made reservation for indoor seating, but had to wait 15 min. before being seated outdoors. We are elderly, and it was too breezy and cool for us. Our appetizers arrived before we were able to order beverages, and they were out of the French beer that my husband wanted. Then, the wait for our main courses was a bit long. My food was very good, but my husband was very disappointed in the mussels and the bouillabaisse. The servers all seemed rushed, so it wasn't the most pleasant experience. We learned at the end of the evening that our server had to leave for a family emergency, but we should have been told early on that others would be serving us. However, our drinks were complimentary, so they certainly did their best to make up for the inconveniences.
We are so glad the French Gourmet weathered the pandemic and is back - now with both outdoor and indoor seating. Fantastic food - and don't skip dessert.
The French Gourmet is still getting on it's feet. Wine choices seem to be limited due to high daily purchases, so we're told. Confusion over wine availability and inexperienced staff bring the great meal experience to a screeching halt. Bastille Day was crowded and demanding I know but substituting a different wine without telling the guests is a faux pas reserved for beginners and less distinguished places. Hope to return later when the staff gets trained properly.
Thank God the French Gourmet is open again! The onion soup and the Bernaise sauce is to die for. The ambiance of the patio seating is a bit raw but better than nothing. The chairs there need some padding but worth it. Would and do recommend.
Delicious food and great service! Love their outdoor patio
We arrived during happy hour so we got to try various plates at 2/3 price. The cheese+meat spread was very good. Mac and Cheese was for an adult taste instead of kids. We ordered the Duck and the Lamb as entrees. Both were very good, especially the skin of the duck. Outside patio seating is the right ambiance for San Diego and French. Nice and breezy to keep things safe, but traffic noise is noticeable.
The bakery is part of the same building. The Strawberry Bagatelle was excellent.
It was marvelous evening. the seating area alongside the building transforms one to the alleys and sidewalks of France.
The escargot, moules, and veal were superb.
Service was timed perfectly. with casual style and grace worthy of the restaurants name
The "Patio" is sandwiched between two buildings so it is a little noisy (depending on how loud other people are talking). Servers were friendly and helpful, but not overly attentive. As usual, the food was excellent. My French Toast was thick but surprisingly light and the berries were delicious because they were ripe. My wife Avocado Toast with Salmon was also delicious. We have French Gourmet food delivered 2-3 times a month, And it is always delicious, but this was our first time in time in the restaurant. It will not be out last.
Very happy with the service and meals
Kim, our server, was excellent & very knowledgeable regarding menu items.'
Mark, the bartender, helped us select two bottles of delicious wine.
Overall experience was lovely. We will return!
Great brunch, only marring aspect was there was some repairs going on nearby with sawing sounds, but the food and service was wonderful, will definitely return when next in San Diego!
We have wanted to try this restaurant for quite awhile, as friends who love France go there once a year. We enjoyed it quite a bit, although we did make merry so perhaps it was louder for others than for us! The service was just perfect, neither absent nor too present. The raspberry dessert was great, the scallops were excellent. The place seems as though the parking might be hard, but it is fine.
Small establishment with a nice side patio to help enjoy the warm Cali weather. The brunch was amazing and service was excellent. The mussels were fresh, quiche was fluffy and savory, charcuterie board was the best I’ve ever had. Every bite combination was one to savor. Cocktails were good but the bottles of champagne were quality and taste wayyy above its price point ($18/bottle). Great experience and worth a revisit
I have been going to the French gourmet for about 20 years now,. We went there Sunday evening with a party of six.
We were seated in the outdoor tent area due to COVID-19, which was OK with us. Two of our party was already there when we arrived.
It started out OK with this waiter gentleman in his 30s with blondish hair. Never gave us his name, gave us our menus. When we asked him about other items that we have eaten there in the past that were not on the menu he rudely said that was 40 years ago and this is all that we have. As we placed our orders when the food did arrive. It was satisfactory, but not the normal quality meals of the past.
Our waiter informed us that they have a new chef. Desserts were good as usual, when we went to pay we had script coupons and cash . the waiter was arguing with us about the scrip and not wanting to take it. This waiter was completely unpolished and very unprofessional and didn’t seem like he even wanted to serve us from the beginning. He kept asking each of us every time we ordered my friend what can I get you. Very unprofessional. The past employees Stefan and Laura who is there for years were amazing .
Food needs to be improved , Waiter needs to go and maybe get a job working at a car rental company at an airport where he can improve his customer service skills.
Would highly recommend to the owner to send in A restaurant consultant under cover to evaluate the situation.
After 20 years. Won’t be coming back.
In conclusion none of our party including myself were in any type of bad mood, rude to this waiter in anyway, demanding, we were very polite to him. As a business owner myself owning three businesses employing over 25 employees I would rather do less business. Then to pay an employee to ruin my business.

Cassoulet was very good unfortunately this time steak was tough. Our waiter Coleman took care of the issue. Also when booking in open table, I mentioned it was our 30th anniversary and to surprise us - as a joke. Coleman did exactly that bringing out a creme brûlée on a cutting board with Happy Anniversary spelled out in chocolate. It made our night.
Lovely food, great service, and amazing pricing.
We eat at The French Gourmet at least twice a week. It is always fabulous food and service. Always. Never fails.
The food is amazing but the service could be better. They show clear favoritism toward parties who are buying a lot.
The Happy Hour menu contains some delicious options & the cocktail offerings are very good. For an entree we enjoyed the Diver Scallops, which were just amazing.
Food always tasty and a good value! Great happy hour menu. Excellent Service!
Had an amazing dinner with friends last night. The Octopus was delicious and the scallops were to die for...perfectly cooked. If you are looking for a great place to eat try this PB hidden gem. Oh and the wine list is impressive and such a value.
Terrible! So disappointing - the French gourmet used to be our favorite restaurant! Then the son took over management from the father, and the place slid to wayy below par. My duck 2-way was two ways of bad. The confit leg was overcooked and inedible and the breast was just so-so. It also came with some weird vegetables I couldn’t eat. When I asked for a side of just mash (or really any) potatoes, I was told they don’t have any. Ugh. Couldn’t wait to get out of there and never going back.
Little neighborhood gem! Delicious food and wonderful atmosphere!
Great carrot cake & bakery goods
Great kiesh? smaller pies
The staff at French gourmet is always friendly and make you feel comfortable. The outdoor dining space makes you feel like you are tucked away in a unique space. The food is always amazing.
Tony is fabulous!!
Great service and delicious food!
Fabulous Food and great service!
French Gourmet is always worth it. The food is good and the service is perfect (if I had a restaurant I would ask French Gourmet where they train their waiters).
All 3 of us enjoyed thoroughly!!! The food was great
