Midweek dinning excellent and enjoyable and friendly service.
Myself and my other half went on Valentine's Day (which is also my birthday). The atmosphere was lovely. The staff were wonderful. The food was out of this world, it was so good. I had venison and it was cooked to perfection. My other half more then approved of his ribeye steak. Pudding was glorious (The staff were happy to put a candle in mine when my boyfriend requested. It was a lovely surprise when it came out). My only complaint is that there wasn't any more of it. Haha! As for values for money, it was under £30 for a two course meal - but on Valentine's! Don't be put off. Honestly, well worth the money. I absolutely enjoyed. Everything was amazing. Will be definitely booking another table there on our next trip to Edinburgh.
Gorgeous food and great service - overall excellent night.
I booked the restaurant for a pre-theatre supper for my friend and I on 13 February. I do not recall seeing that there was only a Valentine's Day menu and as there was a family there with a young child, I am guessing it was not made very clear at all . Anyway Valentines menu was £39- no à la carte, no pre-theatre menu. Consequently although the food was, as ever, very good, it was expensive and in our opinion not good value for money. I have eaten in the restaurant before and had been looking forward to my meal, but I was a little bit disappointed in them for hiking up the prices and leaving no choice of menu.
We visited on Saturday night and had a great meal. The menu was very varied and all the food beautifully presented and tasted fabulous! Our 10 year old daughter had Venison steak for the first time and loved it! Very attentive service too, would definitely recommend it.
It was quite when we got there. nice ambience and great food.
I booked this restaurant for NYE and yes I expected it to be busy. However we were crammed into a tiny table at the end of an alcove which was fine until we realised the two large loud groups in the centre off the alcoves noise passed around like a whispering dish straight to us so it was literally impossible to have a conversation. We were then informed that instead of the menu advertised online there was a set menu with half the choice luckily neither of us were vegetarians as this would have made it more difficult. The food however was excellent slightly small portions but good enough my desert was awful but the other one was pretty good so mixed. Food 7.5/10 Ambience 2/10 Service 3/10 probably pretty good on a quiet night with the normal menu otherwise avoid unless you're really stuck!
Excellent meal, the food was very good and the service was brilliant.
We ate hear for New Years eve. The restaurant was fully booked but so well organised that there was very little waiting despite how buy they were.
Each course was cooked to perfection and the staff serving were very attentive without being over fussy.
Would definitely eat there again and recommend it to my friends
Different to what I expected as u go downstairs from street level. However, service was mainly attentive and food was "lunch" sized portions though priced accordingly. Very tasty for all three of us selected different choices and we're all happy with quality.
I would visit again. Thanks servers and kitchen
A very lovely evening, food very good, as well as the service.
Only small downside, was pretty noisy - but it is leading up to Christmas.
We were greeted at the door and immediately seated. Our server was attentive, but not overbearing. She made recommendations when asked and those recommendations were spot on. The food was excellent all around, everyone enjoyed their meal. I would and will return without hesitation.
The service was excellent and orders were taken quickly and efficiently. The nature of the meal was a pre concert dinner at Greyfriars and we had 2 courses and drinks in an hour for three people . The food was excellent in terms of choice, taste and value for money. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. The staff are welcoming and courteous and I will return to this restaurant soon.
Restaurant was very cold when we arrived at 1pm; so cold that one of our guests put his outdoor coat back on! Staff said heating was on but that's not the point, it should have been put on early enough to heat the place up before diners arrived. Spoiled the lunch and the ambience for us. Place was busy. Prices very reasonable.
Food was ok but really nothing special. Service was friendly and efficient. Good enough value but we have had far superior food at other venues close to the city centre for similar prices.
We visited Edinburgh for the first time recently and went to the Cellar Door on our first evening. we found it quite expensive - £68:00 for a two course meal for two with wine but enjoyed the food, service and ambience so much that we returned the next night and treated ourselves to three courses!
Lovely ambiance, excellent food, cracking menu and friendly, chatty, helpful staff. Both my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal at The Cellar Door and I would highly recommend this high quality restaurant to any friend.
We had a great night at the cellar door last week. Food excellent and staff lovely. Will definitely go back.
the starters we had were Ok but not substantial or that tasty. My wife had the seabass which she enjoyed. I had the fish in beer batter and chips but would have preferred tempura and whilst the quality of the fish was good, the overall meal was average.
For dessert the sticky toffee pudding was very good but the ice cream was synthetic and not as good as we generally have.
We really loved the place - a nice table at the back, a very kind and competent waitress, and excellent food. Will be back.
Found this restaurant by chance-close to our hotel. Informal place, no tablecloths, but nice menu and very attentive and pleasant staff. We hadd mussels for a starter, and panfried salmon for main course, and scottish cheeses for dessert, and loved it all, very delicious and nicely presented.
Incredible food, was dreading the bill as I felt we had eaten like kings, but was pleasantly surprised. The staff were lovely too, very quick and friendly. Will definitely be returning.
Very good meal had at The Cellar Door. The food was excellent, with a small well executed Scottish menu with options to suit both adventurous adults and fussy children. Lovely cosy feel and really good value - £125 for 4 people including 3 starters, 4 mains, 3 desserts and alcohol. We will return. Many thanks
Good location and just the right variety of food
There was very little choice in food, and even less choice for vegetarians.
I booked a dinner reservation with a friend for a Wednesday right after the Festival, so it wasn't as busy as I can imagine it could get during that time, but I had a wonderful evening. The place itself is very nice, and the layout would allow for a more secluded feel at certain tables if you were going for a romantic meal, or you could easily seat a larger party for a special occasion. The menu had a good range of options, and the food itself was nicely presented and very tasty. The main plus point to my experience though was the fantastic staff that served us, the girls were absolutely lovely and were more than happy to offer suggestions on what to order, and even made some suggestions for desserts that weren't actually on the menu. I couldn't fault any aspect of the service or my dining experience, and would definitely recommend it. If you are a tourist, it gives an especially nice introduction to good Scottish cuisine and drinks, with the added bonus of being in a very central location.
An evening without the kids is a rare thing, but the inviting food of The Cellar Door made the experience all the better.
On a busy last Saturday of the Festival, the service was polite and efficient without being pushy. The food was suitably portioned and the Sticky Toffee pudding was fantastic.
worth a visit
We had only a short time between Fringe shows to grab dinner, and the staff made things work out nicely. Both of us had fish as our main courses, and both the salmon (with mussels in a cream sauce) and the cod with stir-fried vegs were tasty.
Good location, nice restaurant, nice food - just nothing too special.
Despite the festival crowds and the restaurant being busy we had excellent service. The owner came and had a chat. Good straightforward food, well cooked. Good desserts. We went back again because we had enjoyed it so much.
Wonderful food and service by all during the evening - you couldn't tell the Fringe was in full swing outside due to being in the cellar. Booked last minute and arrived late due to being lost but the service given by all staff was 5 star! Would definitely recommend and return on our next visit to Edinburgh.
Had an excellent meal, service first class with very friendly staff
Surprised in a nice way when bill arrived, given what we all had
Would recommend restaurant to anyone
Would go back without hesitation, and definitely will next time in Edinburgh
Visited during Edinburgh festival so extremely busy. Service
Prompt, friendly but unobtrusive .Staff welcoming and helpful. Three different meals,(sea bass, venison, fillet steak)' all beautifully cooked and presented.Must revisit.
Cellar door is set just up the road from royal mile and the old town. It's a lovely little place and we sat downstairs away from the hustle and bustle of outside (fringe festival was on so it was pretty manic), the waitresses were very observant we were served in decent time and our food came quickly we had mains and dessert and enjoyed every bite would definitely recommend and we may very well visit again if in the area.
Family meal booked well in advance for 4 adults & 1 child . Our table was in an area which would have been lovely, had it had sufficient lighting. The menu was nothing like the one viewed online when we booked, it had little choice & out of the 5 of us there wasn't one main dish any of us felt excited about out of the sparse choice of 6 or 7. The waitress came to take our food order before we had ordered drinks and when I asked for a half lager & lime I was told they didn't have draught, she directed me to the drinks menu where the nearest I could see to this was ciders & ales!! So I had a soft drink, as she made no attempt to suggest anything & by this stage I was getting fed up of the place. The bread & olives was fine & the main was ok, the side order of veg arrived after we had finished. My young son had the childrens menu but the main dessert menu was handed to everyone when his menu had a dessert included which I had taken note of earlier. No one else had dessert or coffees because by this stage we just wanted to leave A.S.A.P. Family evening spoilt by choosing this restaurant. Will not return.
We were a party of four adults, dining out for a special occasion. We have diverse tastes in food, but the selection of food available suited us all. The service was excellent, friendly and helpful. There was always someone available if we required something, but this was not overwhelming, allowing us to enjoy our food at leisure. We spent a long time in the restaurant but at no time did anyone try to encourage us to leave, even though it was a busy evening. The food was a treat, enhanced by superb presentation. We would definitely eat here again if the opportunity presented itself.
Traditional menu offering quality food cooked and presented to a high standard. The staff are polite, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. A nice cosy bolthole which deserves to be better known.
Have been many times before but not as good with new menu. Not as many fish choices. Service still as good and staff very friendly but not sure we will go back.
Found through Google. The owner was the hostess. Very nice atmosphere but a bit crowded tables. Service and food we're very good. If we lived in Edinburgh it would be "on the rotation".
Me and my boyfriend visited the Cellar Door for his birthday on a recent trip to Edinburgh, the food was excellent, the broccoli and cheese soup was gorgeous, steak was excellently cooked and the sticky toffee pudding was the best I have ever had, we both went away very full and happy!
The service was brilliant all the waitresses were very attentive and very friendly.
I would highly recommend to anyone who is visiting the city!
The Cellar Door was lovely. The food was excellent. The staff were lovely and very friendly. And the ambience of the restaurant made it a really memorable night. Thank you.
Great service. Delicious food with brilliant range of gluten free options. Love it!
