The Brass Door
We are "the local meeting place" for business and social events in the San Ramon Valley. It is a place where generation after generation of families has come to meet friends and family. It is a place where newcomers to the valley soon become old friends.
The Brass Door, formerly known as the 8/5 Club, was established by Howard Schlesinger in 1946. It was originally a six-stool bar and 20-person dining facility. Schlesinger's son, Mickey, and his partner Dick Basso bought the club in 1955. Soon after, they renamed the club The Brass Door. Over the years, the partners expanded the facility to include a 20-stool bar, 50-seater cocktail lounge and a dining area for 160 guests. Following a brief closure in 1994 due to a fire, the restaurant was rebuilt from its original location.

We always appreciate the old school quality of the BD . We always enjoy our meals at the Brass Door. The food and service is really good. Our server was good as well.
I do wish that the menu , decor and the ambiance could be jazzed up a little .
The only thing I had a little issue with was The Host that sat us at our table did not wear a mask while I had mine on but it still was a bit uneasy feeling. We (our party) is all vaccinated but still , I think he should have had a mask on.
The chocolate cake for desert was somewhat/vert stale. (Good thing it came with ice cream)
The table of six next to us was very loud.
It took a long time after we were finished eating to order desert.
My past experiences were not like this. I hope this was a one time thing due to staff shortage since some people would rather stay on unemployment than work..
My sisters and I had a birthday lunch at the Brass Door on March 15. Due to the current health advisory, there were very few patrons. However, the food and drink service was, as usual, excellent. We had a great time and will be back just as soon as this current situation is resolved.
Always our go to restaurant for brunch. Great food, drinks and service.
Always dependable thank you.
Brass Door has become a top favorite for fine dining, and it is very close for the 2 households we assemble for dining. Food is always excellent, and we usually have some leftovers. Catherine provide excellent service as always.
Fantastic food, great service. From steaks to seafood to salads and sandwiches - all of it was great.
Classy place with older style bar. Excellent French Dip and Calamari Appetizers.
Don't overlook the bread pudding dessert!
The food is great and the service is great and the food is tasty.
Very busy and very busy for one server
Great service and the prime rib sandwich was outstanding!!
Four of us went to dinner Sunday evening. Seated immediately, service was good, and the drinks were good. Food was generally good except my liver was undercooked. My fault - I asked for rare and should have said medium rare or medium. Overall, a nice experience.
I have tried every item on their menue and every one was cooked perfect and tasted great
Short rib was half fat
Wonderful bar and bartender made the best martini ever, so friendly and attentive. Great service, fantastic food leg of lamb, pan seared scallops, prime rib, soup, and salmon were Superb. A fun place to go with a large group.
food and service was very good. We all enjoyed our meal. No prosecco so I ordered house champagne which could have been a better brand.
I would recommend if they want a mediocre meal. Service wasn't great and salad was bad. Salmon a little overdone, pasta had only a little chicken and prime rib fair.
It took awhile to get seated and we were in a high traffic area right behind the host table where you could feel every footstep. Also, I asked multiple times for a high chair. However, the food was excellent! Prices were a bit high, though not out of range. Loved the prime rib.
Always a consistent and great experience, excellent service. In this day and age, it's nice to have a great traditional place with good food at reasonable prices.
We had a wonderful dinner and great service!
Had reservations and we were seated as requested. Service was good and food was great!!!
V-Day date night with my wife. First time at the Brass Door. Excellent service and even better food. Fast and perfect service. Overall, it was a most enjoyable and memorable evening. Will definitely be going back again and again.
Wonderful as always! Our special place
We pick the Brass Door for family dinners as there is something for everyone on the menu!
We had dinner on Valentine's Day, so we "knew" we'd feel rushed. But, to our surprise, we had a delightful, delicious meal without awareness of the time. Our waitress, Catherine, was very polite and conscientious, even though she had the whole room to herself for quite a while. My prime rib was excellent. My wife's scallops were perfect. There's a reason that The Brass Door has survived for so long in one location!
Sunday brunch !
Just came back from a 25-day cruise and we were desperately in need of delicious food so we headed to the Brass Door where the service and food never fails. Thank you Brass Door !
It’s an old fashioned leather booth place with classic dishes. Nothing avant- guard here. Great garlic bread. The service was really slow but it hasn’t been in the past.
Always a favorite but this seemed to be an off night. Large parties made it noisey and sevice not what we are used to receiving. Thankfully this wasn't our first time eating here or wouldn't return.
We had not been to the Brass Door in ages because we don’t live in the area...but it was worth the drive. Food and service were excellent. I had the 9 ounce filet which was cooked perfectly and my husband enjoyed the salmon special. Both of our friends finished off their prime rib dishes. Cocktails were flawless. We’ll be back.
We did not have one of the awesome life-time servers. Ours was aloof and we had to ask her to take our order after she took them from people who sat down after us.
Three of use ordered the half french dip sandwich. She served us a large, medium and small sandwich (small sandwich was half the size of the large one). We were paying the same price. When we pointed this out to her her answer was « What do you want me to do about it? » A seasoned waitstaff would have never walked out of the kitchen with such fragrant inconsistencies. We asked her to replace the two smaller ones, which she did, but took away from our dining experience.
Won’t be back until I can shake this negative feeling.
Excellent service, and always go food. Reservations for six, seated in a great spot, and we’ll attended to. Love the variety of the menu, and promptness of our orders. Definitely a place I recommend.
The Brass Door is a treasure for the Bay Area! Whether you are in the Tri-Valley or drive from San Francisco - it is always worth the drive - as you are assured a fantastic meal, the best service & a perfect place to meet, visit, & talk in a warm and friendly atmosphere..... It is no wonder it has been here so long, and is so cherished by all of us!
One of our very favorite restaurants. Food variety is excellent and we enjoyed all of our entrees. Our service was excellent as usual.
The food was OK, service was good, the hostess didn't have a very good attitude.
Great service, waitress right there for anything you wanted or needed. The food was good and desert was even better. We all had a great time!
the server was outstanding the food disappointing, the other time we were there the food was outstanding this time not so
Great cocktails-wonderful brunch. Best bartender and waitresses. Be back in 2020 !
I wasn't happy with the prime rib (see below), but everyone else in my party greatly enjoyed their dinners.
Service was very good, and the prices were quite reasonable.
The one person who ordered a steak was quite happy with it.
Of particular note is the number of meals that can be ordered in a "senior" version, which comes with a small dessert.
For a steakhouse, they have a very nice selection of a number of non-steak choices (various fish, chicken, and pasta dishes). For the lighter eater, there is a good selection of a dozen sandwhiches ... some of which sound great.
Their appetizer selection is a bit limited, particularly if you don't want a seafood.
Half the table wanted to order a hot chocolate to drink ... they don't have/sell that. (On a cold Christmas Eve, I can see why they wanted one to drink :)
Parking can be a problem. Some of our party had to park on the street, a bit of a walk from the restaurant.
For me, I was quite disappointed in the inappropriately prepared (IMHO) prime rib. Prime rib should have a lifter, usually browned in the cooking process (google "prime rib" and *every* photo of cooked prime rib you see shows that!) ... but the Brass Door appears to have trimmed off the lifter before serving (perhaps before cooking?). And the lifter *is the most flavorful part* of the prime rib. Period. Without the lifter, prime rib is an uninterrupted, uninteresting slab of undifferentiated red meat.
The waitress offered to replace the prime rib with another piece, but since the others at the table had the same problem, I declined ... knowing it was a systematic problem, not a one-off.
good food at reasonable prices all the time! Parking is always a problem!
The food is always good here - but the service tonight was very bad. We know it was not her fault bc she was completely over-worked, but that does not change our poor experience. The way we were spoken to by her since she was always in a rush, her forgetting we hadn’t ordered yet, to the overall subpar experience, made me rethink wanting to come here regularly. Experience and ambiance means a lot when we go out to eat as a family and the last couple times we’ve come here, it has really taken a turn for the worse in terms of vibe and care and experience. We’ve loved this place for so long!
