The American Hotel
Of course, The American Hotel is more than just a hotel, it houses an excellent restaurant as well. There are multiple dining areas depending on what kind of experience guests are looking for. The Main Dining Room is a lively and rambunctious room that holds about 80 people while the Drew Room is a quieter, more private area for those looking for an intimate evening. The food is quintessential American cuisine from across the United States.

Service was great; food was good; not great for the price!
Consistency, they hit a home run in all respects every time
I recommend removing the tv in the bar area. We sat under it last night and for the full hour staff was stopping at our table to watch the football game. It was annoying and rude. Not to mention the clanging of the bottles from behind the bar. Perhaps that table for 2 should be removed entirely. A lot of traffic and noisy
Great place for friends and/or romance. Beautiful decor.
Great bar, great meal. Nice setting in bar area where we ate.
Stopped here for lunch with my daughters on way to Montauk. Had such an amazing lunch everything was perfect. The staff is amazing, especially the bartender. Thank you!!
The waiter was so very professional and we felt like a million bucks. Food on point and decor lovely.
In lieu of a New Years Eve Celebration we had a brunch everything was wonderful! Had a great afternoon
Terrific spot. Russian waitress (forgot her name) was lovely. Initially had a noisy table but they moved us immediately without fuss. Impressive wine list, the Swiss red dole was beyond belief. We’ll go again.
It had been a while since I returned to this old favorite, and it was a fabulous dinner. The food was beautiful and the service was friendly and professional.
You should have options for children.
We went to the movies in Sag Harbor, and after the show we walked right across the street for dinner at American Hotel. We were greeted so warmly, and even though we were almost 45 minutes early for our reservation, they seated us immediately. I asked to be in the room by the bar, and we were accommodated. The room was decorated so festively for Christmas. We were approached right away by Paul, the bartender, who made us two fabulous martinis. What’s good about American Hotel, is that they all work together. Paul happily took our dinner order, even though he was also at the bar. It’s nice that whoever sees you waiting to order, is happy to help you. We started with a crab cake and a Caesar salad. Both delicious. I had the grilled shrimp and my husband had the steak au poivre ( which was a special that evening). Both entrees were outstanding. We also had a delicious Pinot noir with dinner. We were too full for dessert. This restaurant isn’t cheap, but it’s truly one of the best. Our dinner with two drinks, wine, 2 appetizers, and 2 dinners, was around 200 dollars, but it was worth every penny. We will be returning soon!
Our experience started out rather disappointingly. We arrived with our 1 yr old for dinner at 5:30. (I, the grandmother, my daughter, her husband and well behaved baby.) We were all dressed up in our holiday finery and looking forward to a great experience. However, when we checked in, the woman was surprised to see the baby. She just said matter of fact my that she didn’t have high chairs. I mentioned that I requested one in open table and she again matter of factory told me, “Oh I never look at that til the last minute.” She offered no solution. We just stood there. It wasn’t. Dry welcoming and I didn’t know what to say. Fortunately, the male (maybe the maitre de?) standing there said he’d go next door to Page and see if he could borrow one from them. That was successful so we settled down to our evening out.
Our waiter came. We asked him what cocktails he could recommend. He couldn’t. He said the bartender could make anything. Ok. Then we asked about wine. He shot back, “red or white? He was t very into it. It wasn’t until we ordered our second glasses of “red” that he bothered to introduce a wine list. It was all very strange. I have been here before and eaten with friends. I live in the area but I made a mental note that this restaurant does not encourage children. Even at 5:30 when no one is there. I won’t do that again.
The food was good and we tipped the maitre de extra as
we left for getting us a high chair from the more family friendly restaurant, Page, next door. But I have to say it soured me on this place. Life is too short to go where you are not wanted and where they let you know it, too. There are too many other restaurants in Sag Harbor who will happily take our business when we do venture out at 5:30 with a baby and they are: Tutto Il Giorno, Lulu’s, Page, and Baron’s Cove, among others, for those families who might be interested.
Save yourself the trouble and skip American Hotel.
Lovely experience. Highly recommend. Friendly staff, great food and great ambience.
Great dinner service food and wine!
I'm making several reservations and Inviting different friends for holiday meals.
It's beautifully decorated with great food and awesome staff.
What could be better??!!
Lovely atmosphere in the back dining room; excellent service and delicious food:…
So quaint & old, loved that about it. Very little value to be had here. $22 for an appetizer sized spinach salad - it goes on from there. The food was good but nowhere worth the money they charge for it. I realize that this is to be expected in a town like Sag Harbor, but this was ridiculous.
Beautiful holiday decorations.
Lovely place to celebrate!
The service was outstanding! The food was superb. The atmosphere makes you feel like your back in the 40's or 50's. Well worth a visit. We will definitely return.
Fantastic eating experience as usual. Iconic Hamptons restaurant/bar. Prices are a bit steep but exceptional experience.
I always look forward to dining at the American hotel because it is such a special place. But we’re always underwhelmed by the food. Whether it’s the crab cakes or the petit filet mignon it just misses the mark. And the sides are so ordinary.
But for a special occasion and when you’re feeling flush by all means go. The ambiance is wonderful
We had a wonderful evening at a beautiful quiet table with excellent service and delicious food! Thank you! Paula
the staff and hospitality were exceptional. Well trained, knowledgeable and professional yet warm and friendly . The food was very good traditional french favorites the duck confit was perfectly cooked tender and tasty. The Flounder muniere could have used a bit more sauce but it was cooked perfectly tender. The blood orange salad needed a bit more blood orange but still tasty inclded pears so it was really more like a mixed salad . All in all it was totally worth it and I would def go back.
Just good overall. Nothing bad, nothing great, service has been better. Waited too long to be seated, then told no reservation, then reservation found but no recognition of table requested, overall service was fair at best and food was fine.
Lovely restaurant. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable & attentive.
My husband and I had the most incredible dinner here. We have been to almost every restaurant in the Hamptons, South to Montauk, and had never tried American Hotel— we were extremely impressed. We were celebrating a very special occasion and I had asked for champagne to be brought to us upon seating and they did so immediately and graciously. Our waiter, Leonard, was also absolutely amazing— most of my stars go to him. He told us his history at some of the best restaurants in NYC, such as Jean-Georges, and his experience was evident based on his professional yet friendly demeanor. The food was also outstanding, we had the porter house special and it was delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant. Will be back for sure! Thank you to Leonard for such a fabulous evening.
Great waiter, service, food was delicious
We ate here frequently on our trip to Sag Harbor and the restaurant is always good, but the special dish we had last time, Lobster risotto with mushrooms was exceptional. The flavors and textures were sensational.
Lovely ambience and setting, with wonderful service. A bit pricey but that matches the area.
The American Hotel has always been one of my favorite restaurants; so, I’m sorry to leave a mixed review. We were shown to a lovely outdoor table with heirloom roses by a gracious woman. Our waiter, Joseph was iill. Although he wore a mask over his mouth; his mask was not covering his nose. We each started w lobster bisque. It was good enough, but not great. We next ordered the spinach salad which was exceptional, the best spinach salad I ever tasted. We were served delicious bread. We shared one entree, the grilled shrimp. The shrimp were very good and were served w excellent vegetables We ordered a total of three glasses of house cabernet. it was obscenely priced at $23 per glass. Shame on you. We also ordered American coffee. It wasn’t fresh, exceptional or hot.. Yet we were charged $7 per cup. The wait staff no sooner served the coffee than they presented the bill and RUDELY rushed us out telling us people were waiting for our table. There were many empty tables inside. When I pay nearly $300 for lunch, I do not expect to be rushed out. We were not treated w respect. The sick waiter should have been sent home by management.
We love it here
Dining out is a multi-dimensional experience where food is the leading factor, and service is just as integral. Here at this venue, taste of the dishes is to be celebrated, whether it is the mushroom or codfish starter or quail dish or crab cake, it was nearly exquisite. Here is the but - our wait staff is a man by the name of Joseph and you get him next time, you would be better served asking for an alternative server. He is as nonchalant as a floating willow, in and out and wandering but never once stopping to ask about how things are. Or add to the drinks, or any other very basic courtesy that a venue like this one would train a staffer to perform. In any event, the bill took an eon to arrive, and that was after sig along to Joseph, and sending a gofer to chase him down, and sending another one to chase him down again. Who puts up with this crap if you want to spend this kind of money in the Hamptons for dinner on a Monday night when it is not too busy to start with?
Service was pretty rude, food was good but severely overpriced. It’s a good place to stop in if you’re walking around town for lunch but wouldn’t go out of my way to return.
Truly a unique place in the Hamptons, such beautiful old world charm great place for a special occasion.
Wonderful food and ambiance
Lovely little restaurant, quiet early Sunday morning in the fall, great service and delicious food! The brioche French toast was excellent!
Our service and food were excellent! I felt very “waited” on without being pushy. Being from Oregon I’m not used to such high prices but the food was delicious.
Always special and excellent. Favorite Hamptons spot.
Always the best service and amazing food and ambiance. The duck is so good and the steak special spectacular. Gorgeous piece of meat. Love the hotel. Always a favorite ! Oh also, the bacon in the spinach salad is the best bacon ever !
