The American Hotel
Of course, The American Hotel is more than just a hotel, it houses an excellent restaurant as well. There are multiple dining areas depending on what kind of experience guests are looking for. The Main Dining Room is a lively and rambunctious room that holds about 80 people while the Drew Room is a quieter, more private area for those looking for an intimate evening. The food is quintessential American cuisine from across the United States.

This was my 2nd time at the American Hotel. The food was delicious but their menu is VERY limited and in dire need of an update. They are very unaccommodating with food requests. The restaurant SMELLED very musty in the main dining room— the odor was so offensive we asked to be switched to another section. We were then seated in the the room with atrium ceiling, which also has a peculiar smell as well. I realize the theme of the restaurant is that it’s an old hotel and that’s the charm but the smell is unacceptable especially with the prices they charge.
Pretty old, stodgy place. Not a great ambiance. Food was okay.
I’ve been to the American Hotel but this dinner was not one of the better ones. My fathers meal came about 10 minutes after everyone else’s. He ordered the steak well done and it came out medium rare. No explanation in fact our waiter had disappeared for the entire time. Other staff just looked the other way. I poured our own wine which is not a problem but the wine bottle was not on the table. Waiter finally came back smd still did not say anything. Walking out the hostess was silent as well. I have much better service at restaurants in NYC and Atlanta. It is really a place to see and be seen.
Wonderful meal. Our server was great and the food was outstanding. Will definitely return.
Great character & history
My wife and I very much looked forward to our dinner at the American
Hotel. We ate outside in the garden and our table was quite nice.
The starters, both the little neck claims and the shrimp cocktail, were excellent. My halibut was just decent, but my wife’s duck, which I tried, was over cooked, tough, and pedestrian in terms of preparation. Our waiter, Dennis, noted that my wife was dissatisfied. He kindly provided us with two deserts at no charge. Dennis was highly professional. The service was first-rate. Nonetheless, my main course was not up to what we expected, and the duck was most disappointing. We do not plan on returning, since there are restaurants in Sag Harbor where we have had much better experiences.
Completely overrated. Food was overpriced and not very good. Atmosphere was old and outdated - doesn’t fit in area anymore.
We waited 2 years to go to this restaurant. Unfortunately, no piano due to COVID-19, we were seated in the bar area, which we were unhappy about, my chicken was OK, just OK, the sauce was extremely salty, my mom's fish was dry. Overall just an OK dinner for big bucks. I would wait until you can enjoy the main dining room and perhaps by then the food will be a bit better as well. The service was great, our server did a great job.
The American Hotel was always a place from another time but now it seems old and tired and antiquated. The servers really tried but they were all new and inexperienced and it showed in many ways and at many times during the meal. Servers reached across people with food for someone else; the white wine was warm. An entree of Dover sole had no sauce, was dried out and overpriced. Sorry to say after many years of enjoying this place, that I’ll not likely go back anytime soon.
Nothing special. Service could have been much better and food was mediocre. Good place for a drink and burger. Not fine dining.
Love the atmosphere. Great menu with excellent food!
Fabulous, classic Sag Harbor gem! Will definitely be returning soon.
Always wonderful! Great food great staff😊
Terrific! Everything was great
Food and service are always excellent !!
Maybe it’s pandemic related, but our meal was not the special experience we expect from the American Hotel. Menu was paired down and food presentation was uninspired. I expect more for $375 for two.
Delicious , well prepared lobster BLT. Tuna entree outstanding! We’ll be back very soon!
The American Hotel never disappoints if you are looking for the old world charm of privilege… we live having a lunch or brunch there. The drinks are fabulous…
Nice local food was fair for the cost — there are better places to dine out east — I’d stick to breakfast here only
Amazing service, overall best place in Sag Harbor
Wonderful as always.
Dover sole was served lukewarm
Chicken breast was good
FoieGras was mediocre as presented - needs a beter fruit accompanyment
Choc. Mousse was good
Ceasar salad mediocre taste and too much dressing on salad
It's a cozy romantic place. Menu never changes. And there is no loud music, thank goodness.
nice meal, great old school experience,
the crab, tuna and salmon were perfect
The food was once again outstanding. The perfect martini followed by oysters Rockefeller and then flounder almondine. Delicious. Excellent service.
Pleasant atmosphere, relaxed dining.
Everything about the American Hotel was excellent!
The service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The wine list is extraordinary! And the Lobster BLT is Amazing! Try to get get seated on the front porch where you have the best view for people watching!
Lovely experience. Had lunch on the porch for anniversary. Food very good. Will definitely return.
Always such a treat, everyone is so warm and welcoming! The food was amazing yesterday, grilled salmon with perfectly cooked spinach and mashed potatoes, delicious!
This is our first time using Open Table since the pandemic. I love this restaurant and thought it the perfect first step to normalcy. The food is always excellent, Saturday was no exception.
Wonderful service in a beautiful setting. Good, well prepared food. A bit pricey but worth it for a special occasion.
Enjoyed the Staff and the food was great. We will be back next season.
the Black Bass special was one of the finest composed fish dishes I have ever had
The culinary experience was exceptional. We dined al fresco & the noise was deafening. Not the fault of the American Hotel, but it did somewhat mar the wonderful meal we enjoyed.
The hostess was very unprofessional and seemed flustered when we arrived even though it was not crowded. We were there for a special anniversary and although they were informed beforehand no one paid any attention. We told the hostess th e reservation was for 2 and when she returned to see if the table was ready she asked if we were part of the party of five!
Oh well - the food was very good and the waiter attentive. A pretty spot for a celebration but they need to step up their game.
Best restaurant in the Hamptons. Food is amazing and staff top notch. Dennis the Menace was our waiter. Nicest and so professional. Cant wait to go back again.
Always a wonderful experience here! The lobster bisque was the best that I have ever had in my life-and I’m
Not exaggerating! Our bartender/server was such a lovely and kind gentleman who knows how to make a martini! Thanks again.
