Tastings - A Restaurant, Wine Shop & Wine Bar
Real Lobster, Real Butter, Real Cream. Period.
Chef William's Crabmeat Casserole
Chef William's Secret Recipe. Served with Hot Buttered Croutons.
Shallot and Wild Mushroom Soup
With Truffle Cheese and Truffle Oil.
We were the only people there. I think the chef went home. The food was mediocre.
The crab casserole is as delicious as we remember. However, I ordered the sautéed mushroom plate and all the vegetables were under seasoned and there were no salt and pepper shakers on the table. The service was great!
I have to start with how FANTASTIC the food was. Truly the best I've had in Charlottesville and Cville is a restaurant/food scene! I would go back for the food alone despite some other elements not totally being a great fit for us.
The atmosphere was quaint but a bit dated and uncomfortable (benches and captains style wood chairs) for a nice date night with my husband. For this reason we didn't linger and have multiple courses, etc. and instead just had 1 drink each and entrees and went elsewhere for dessert and drinks.
Our server was very nice!
Incredible wine list -- just choose a bottle from the shop. The wine-by-the-glass pricing, however, remains a mystery. We love the lobster bisque and the mushrooms in puff pastry!
Excellent food and prompt service; excellent advice on wine. I also liked the french-oriented menu with many varied choices.
A wonderful quaint hole in the wall restaurant. An excellent wine store with a fantastic small restaurant attached with tasty gourmet food! Todd assisted me in picking a perfect wine for dinner and a bottle of wine gift for a friend. I would recommend. Very close to the brick street mall area downtown.
One word tells it all,,,wonderful!!!
So this is a true hidden gem. A very unassuming space, that needs no context as the food, and wine pairings are spectacular. It’s slightly off the main strip; however full of locals.
Go for the wine ! The food ranges from good to excellent (they have great ingredients but not always the best preparations). But regardless of what you eat -- they will find wines to go with the food to match your palate and your budget. Really fun to experience all kinds of new tastes with the most knowledgeable wine advisors in town.
Bill Curtis's Tastings is the best place to drink wine in Charlottesville. If you're a wine geek, just tell Bill what you like, and you will be amazed at what he comes up with. If you're a wine beginner, he will walk you through many choices to help you figure out what you like.
The cuisine is uneven -- sometimes OK, sometimes great. We particularly like the morels in puff pastry, which are usually super, but last time, they were too winey. But...come here for the wine, rather than the food!
The food and wine were pretty good . I would not say great, but pretty good. The restaurant looks dirty , dark, dingy and dated, I wish the owner Bill would put some money into the outside patio and the interior with updates and a good cleaning. Honestly it looks like Jon Taffer from Bar Rescue is needed in this establishment . Overall I am glad we experienced it since we live only less than a block away.
Bill and his staff are a treasure....always a fabulous experience....:)
We had a delicious dinner; enjoyed the lobster bisque, the seafood paella and our wine pairing.
Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable and the owner/chef is a gem!
We will be back!
The food was delicious and well-prepared. A lot of menu choices. Excellent wait staff. Great wine selections
This was our first experience at tastings and it was lovely. We enjoyed having someone recommend a good wine pairing with our meal and we got to try wines we wouldn't have purchased ourselves. The food was fantastic. Overall would highly recommend for a nice night out.
Great concept! Excellent food. Pick your own bottle from the wine shop. Great suggestions for delicious wines. Loved it.
Tastings is the best place in Charlottesville to sample fabulous wine with dinner. Chef Bill has some cellar treasures that he can dig up, and it's worth the time and expense. The cuisine is fine, and the service OK, but you go to Tastings for the wine!
After we sat down the waitress asked if we wanted anything to drink.
We asked for a wine menu and were told if we wanyed a bottle, pick a bottle from the very large selection they have and it was priced at the retail price plus a small corkage fee
If we wanted a glass, describe the type of wine you like and what you planned to eat, and would make a choice to let you try from the over 100 bottles that were open. The actual bottles change day to day.
For our meals my wife and I choice from the specials that were on a blackboard. We both had seafood/fish which tasted fresh with a taste sauce.
Food was good but very limited options. Only vegetable or salad option was Brussels sprouts. Lots of crab meat. The mushroom soup I had was excellent. The wine that was recommended was a great paring with our meal. The decor was very outdated. I’m glad I went but won’t be rushing back.
Having dinner with dear friends
Our first time at Tastings and it is now our favorite restaurant in Cville! We loved the cozy, QUIET atmosphere and the food and wine were both outstanding. I highly recommend it.
Such a gem! Extraordinary wine shop and delicious restaurant. Don't be a hurry - it's an experience!
We all thought the food was delicious and presented well but the serving portions were quite small.
The size of the restaurant and lower ceilings than many other resaurants make it a comfortable, cozy and relaxing place to dine. We highly recommend it!
The food is always excellent. Bill, the proprietor, does a great job listening to our wine preferences, assessing the food that we've chosen, and delivering perfect wine choices.
Fish was over cooked. Otherwise a perfect evening.
Tastings never disappoints in the quality and choices of fine food. A bit pricey even for Charlottesville but a better value than many other restaurants that charge just as much on the downtown mall.
Great food, and a unique opportunity where you can dine inside a wine shop. Best of all, rather than perusing a wine list, you can choose your bottle of wine from the store's stock, with a minimal $7 corkage fee. We'll be back.
Bill Curtis (owner) has a cellar beyond compare. Diners can grab a bottle from the wine shop, or ask Bill to dredge up a cellar treasure. The cuisine is also far more refined than the decor would suggest. We has pasta with escargots, mushrooms in puff pastry, and a lovely apple tart -- all paired with phenomenal Burgundies. Just let Bill make his recommendations!
A hidden gem in Charlottesville, with one of the best wine lists in the mid-Atlantic region (the restaurant doubles as a wine shop). The wines are priced at wine shop rather than restaurant rates and you have a wide selection of unique, generous wine flights. The owner will come to the table to make recommendations. The food is French-bistro style and always high-standard. The ambience is traditional and homey — not fancy. Tastings has many loyal, long-time customers. It also hosts the Charlottesville Wine Club on selected weeknights.
Wait staff was very friendly. The food was good and the wine was excellent.
Haven't been there in a while. Still excellent food and great wine selection
Tastings understands the way food and wine should be prepared and served. Bill is the owner/chef and he has some great people assisting him now, which means he can pay more attention to the kitchen. The food is very rich. This is true of almost every dish, so if you don't like rich food, you might not like the selection here. But for an occasional indulgence, it is spectacular.
Thankfully, there are several vegetarian choices, and I had the mushroom (with cream of course) soup and the melange of seasonal mushrooms, which came with a variety of small interesting vegetable sides, all of which I loved except the cabbage. No matter. There was plenty of food. My companions loved the soft shell crabs, and other meat dishes that I don't remember. But we had a relaxed, 2 hour plus dinner at which we could talk without yelling, because although there were others there, everyone spoke with quiet respect for the lovely ambiance that is Tastings.
Dinner was delicious! Wine pairings did not disappoint and we appreciated that our server let us sample various wines to find the perfect match!
Wonderful dinner as usual and with Bill’s special expertise with the wine selections !!
I really don’t understand why people are giving this place such low ratings, I have been with my family three times over the course of a year (we do not live in Charlottesville). Each time we learn something new about wine and try something incredible from the kitchen. I can understand how your first visit can be intimidating because there is no wine list but please trust the owner or staff, they are incredible knowledgeable. We also do a wine flight to try new things and talk with the waiter about which wines we liked more than others. You can also walk through the wine shop and pick your own bottle which they will open for you. We always have had a great time!
Great food and service was provided, as always, by Bill Curtis and friendly staff. We love being able to select from the Wine Shop's extensive and varied offerings exactly the right fine wine to go with a meal - and being charged a very minimal corkage fee is a decided plus. I only regret not being able to find room for the mouthwatering chocolate mousse to end the meal! Next time for sure.
The real perk here is the owner, Bill. He will personally make recommendations for wine pairings to compliment the wonderful food. This spot is great for nice food and quiet conversation.
Superb food and wine - real treasure
First visit. Red wine flight very good. Shad roe was the best I have ever had. It’s difficult to find so it was a special treat. Next visit will be for soft shelled crabs.
A great place to experience good food and a wineshop full of wines to pair dinner with. Had a very nice meal with help of very knowledgeable staff recommeding wines to go with appetizer and entree. Owner/chef/wine expert is part of the experience as he checks on the customers. The restaurant is combined with a wineshop which has a tasting bar so you can go in to shop and taste wines without trying the restaurant. Try it once; you will go again.
