When Tastings started in 1990 it was the only fully integrated Wine Shop/ Wine Bar/ Restaurant on the East Coast. About twenty years later, there is still only a handful of establishments in the U.S. such as Tastings. Besides being an outstanding wine shop in its own right as well as a fine restaurant, Tastings offers a large selection of wines by the glass. Wines are offered in flights for experimentation with a meal for a modest fee over the retail price of wines in the shop. Tastings' restaurant serves simple, direct cuisine that allows each customer a gustatory and educational experience in a friendly but professional fine restaurant.

We were the only people there. I think the chef went home. The food was mediocre.

The crab casserole is as delicious as we remember. However, I ordered the sautéed mushroom plate and all the vegetables were under seasoned and there were no salt and pepper shakers on the table. The service was great!

I have to start with how FANTASTIC the food was. Truly the best I've had in Charlottesville and Cville is a restaurant/food scene! I would go back for the food alone despite some other elements not totally being a great fit for us. The atmosphere was quaint but a bit dated and uncomfortable (benches and captains style wood chairs) for a nice date night with my husband. For this reason we didn't linger and have multiple courses, etc. and instead just had 1 drink each and entrees and went elsewhere for dessert and drinks. Our server was very nice!

Incredible wine list -- just choose a bottle from the shop. The wine-by-the-glass pricing, however, remains a mystery. We love the lobster bisque and the mushrooms in puff pastry!

A wonderful quaint hole in the wall restaurant. An excellent wine store with a fantastic small restaurant attached with tasty gourmet food! Todd assisted me in picking a perfect wine for dinner and a bottle of wine gift for a friend. I would recommend. Very close to the brick street mall area downtown.

So this is a true hidden gem. A very unassuming space, that needs no context as the food, and wine pairings are spectacular. It’s slightly off the main strip; however full of locals.

Go for the wine ! The food ranges from good to excellent (they have great ingredients but not always the best preparations). But regardless of what you eat -- they will find wines to go with the food to match your palate and your budget. Really fun to experience all kinds of new tastes with the most knowledgeable wine advisors in town.

Bill Curtis's Tastings is the best place to drink wine in Charlottesville. If you're a wine geek, just tell Bill what you like, and you will be amazed at what he comes up with. If you're a wine beginner, he will walk you through many choices to help you figure out what you like. The cuisine is uneven -- sometimes OK, sometimes great. We particularly like the morels in puff pastry, which are usually super, but last time, they were too winey. But...come here for the wine, rather than the food!
