So disappointed in this place. We showed up on a Sat night and it was 80% empty, which wasn't a good sign. We had even called ahead, it was odd our table was ready for 12 considering there was maybe 6 people in the restaurant. The poor server seemed to be by herself...so we don't blame her, just the management. She did all she could, but you could tell the support was lacking. She was our hottest, server and bar tender. We wondered if she had to cook the food too. The service then was slow, again I don't blame our server...but it all was a struggle from there. They were out of pork, so anything with pork wasn't an option. Plus it was hot inside, she mentioned she didn't understand why they don't turn on the air more?! Well, maybe that's part of why no ones eating there?! I predict this place will be out of business soon, if they don't wake up! Sad, it's a nice location, well set up on the inside. They just need to revamp the menu, and increase the service levels, not to mention, turn up the Ac or at least add more fans.

Avoid. This place is on its last legs. The food was subpar, the music too loud, stoner flaky waitress, issues with their alcohol distributor caused bar supply problems. Empty on a Friday night.

This is a nice, new addition to the Front St. Lahaina dining scene, but unless they get their act together they may not be there much longer. Food was average, good atmosphere, the service so so. Whoever made our desert sundae mistakenly put an onion salsa in it instead of fruit medley. They made a new one but with no real effort to comp us for the bad taste.

Great sunset view but very average food and an empty restaurant at 6 PM. Obviously someone got the message before we did. Don't count on the online menu either - quite a few items weren't available.

We ate here two years ago when it was a fairly new restaurant. At that time we thought the food was very good, yet they were having trouble filling the tables. Now two years later we go back and they are still not filling all the tables. They now have live music, which is nice, not to mention a great view of Lahaina harbor overlooking Front Street. The food did not seem as tasty as it was two years ago...although the presentation was very nice.

Sugar Cane is a great little restaurant with wonderful, tasty and interesting food, and very good wait staff. Located in downtown Lahaina overlooking the water, this is a great place to eat. It is not crowded...yet...and we have Always been happy with every aspect of the place. It's location on the second floor above a gallery may make it a little less noticeable, but there are plenty of good things to recommend this place. We live in Maui and Sugar Cane is one of our new favorite places to go in Lahaina. Don't miss it!!

We really wanted to like this place. It is located above a gallery in the old Famous Dave's spot. Gorgeous view, but unless you're seated on the lanai it is stiflingly warm with poor air circulation. Despite what we had read, our server informed us that the restaurant is not "new" but that it's taken a year or so to figure out their menu, etc. (um, ok....) Service was great and gave us the pick of any table in the house, as we were the only patrons there at 5:30 pm with no other diners present even when we left around 6:30 pm. Our server was very attentive and nice. Specialty drinks were ok. Keiki menu pizza was unusual, prepared with what looked like ketchup and American cheese. (Our pizza-loving child wouldn't eat it.) appetizers (pork belly, Brussels sprouts) were delicious, but presentation was sloppy. Fish special (crab-encrusted opakapaka) sounded incredible, but arrived overdone with gummy topping all swimming in a too-sweet "spicy" (not) sauce with under seasoned pohole ferns on the side. Perhaps this would be a great place to sit at the bar to enjoy draught beers and tapas... and if there was some liveliness to the atmosphere. Hopefully, they'll have it together soon.

the food was good but as the reviews say, the service is just not there. Hey I work in the biz and some training or having someone in charge of the floor would really change the place. The details of our visit are not worth repeating but mostly involved waiting forever, lack of attention to detail and overly casual 'you guys want anything else?" really ruined the meal and for $150 check for 2, seemed a waste. You wont last much longer if you don't figure it out.

It took over 1 hr for our food to arrive, they didn't seem to have a good handle on how to take care of a crowded room. When it did finally come, the food was too rich and not very tasty.

We went to Sugar Cane the night before NYE. They were massively understaffed. The overall dining experience was marred by long waits but most dishes that eventually came out were good. I have to commend our waitress. We had made reservations ahead of time, but weren't able to check in as soon as we entered as there was a long line of parties in front of us. Another person in my party went up to her and told her we had reservations and she checked and then got us seated. A family in front us began to complain, saying that's not fair. I showed them the reservation confirmation. The family began to argue with the waitress that they should be seated instead of us. Luckily, she honored our reservation.

We waited forever after being seated. Tables of eight people who arrived much later than we did were fed, paid there check and gone by the time our main course was served. Even after the manager came over to apologize, it still took a long time to get the food, which was fair at best. Would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

We were told by the waiter that this was a new restaurant and had just opened, then he revised it to tell us it was under new ownership and management as of a few weeks back....stil unsure which it is. Decor was nice and location is perfect, had a table by the open windows overlooking Front Street. The waiter was speedy gonzalez and seemed to be in a little bit of a rush instead of walking everything to the table. the only time he was slow was bringing the bill. Supposedly the chef is a "master chef" - but we were unclear why. We had the pork belly as an appetizer - and there were two issues: fist you only get the outer crisp, with no fat under it (think a pork belly chip), and second the pork belly was swimming in a sauce. Chef should have drizzled on the sauce or put on the side, overpowered the dense, chewy pork belly. Our main courses had the same problem with the sauces - just way to much of it on every dish. The flourless chocolate cake is not what is appears...it is actually a chocolate lave cake, with no molten center.

Nice restaurant with a great location overlooking Front Street and the ocean.... Service was a little slow and mostly attentive, but not outstanding. We ordered the Hana Pohole Fern salad with kamuela tomatoes, mixed upcountry greens, crispy maui onions, pomegranate-truffle vinaigrette... pretty good. We also had the "Pulled Pork Shoulder plate, dry rubbed, maui inspired slaw with island frittes" and a half rack of Lahaina Spareribs "dry rubbed, maui inspired slaw, island frittes".... both were tender and had good taste, but their fries serious need work. They were VERY greasy.

We were excited to find a relatively new place to the Lahaina dining scene with a very well known chef. Arrived at 6:45 for dinner & first thing we noticed was the very large group with lots of unruly kids. Noise level was way too loud to enjoy our table conversation. Service was beyond slow & more large tables began to arrive. We finally got moved out to the balcony where 3 of us crammed onto a 2-top, but at least we could hear each other talk. Our food was delicious, but service & noise level made it hard to enjoy our time there. We waited 18 min trying to flag her down for our check & I finally got up & followed her to the bar& asked for check. 2 other people were also standing there asking for checks. This could be an awesome place if they get more staff or have staff able to handle multiple tables.

My wife and I had dinner on the 4th of July at the Sugar Cane Maui and were seated at a prime table overlooking the ocean. We started with the roast Brussel sprouts then I had the crab crusted chicken and my wife had the macademia crusted mahi mahi. We then shared a creme brûlée. It was one of the best meals we had on Maui and our waitress Cheryl was fantastic. We had a great view of Front Street and the fireworks display. I'll be back if I'm ever in Maui again.

We had a reservation for 7:15 on a Wednesday but didn't need it. Just a few others in the restaurant. Server was extremely attentive, gracious, and helpful. Food was outstanding. Everything was fresh and vibrant and tasted absolutely amazing. This is a very competitive location for restaurants and Sugar Cane Maui lived up to the competition and blew them away. This is no chain restaurant or gimmicky tourist trap. This is a legitimate food lover's destination. Already recommended to friends and family.

The food was amazing! The pork chop and the ahi tuna were fantastic!! The only thing that could have ruined our experience was the service. It took about 15 minutes for our server to come greet us after we were seated, and my water glass was basically empty the entire meal, which was really annoying because that was the only drink I ordered. So by the end of the meal, I was so thirsty. Other than that, the experience was great. The view is so beautiful. We sat out on the lanai and saw the sunset, very romantic. In conclusion, go to Sugar Cane Maui for fantastic food and a beautiful view, but bring your patience for the service. The food is so amazing, it makes up for the terrible service, though!!!

Our service was outstanding. We were rushing to the airport and wanted one last romantic dinner to savour the sweet Maui food. Our waitress did everything possible to ensure that we caught our flight. She understood that we did not want hors d'oeuvres or dessert because we didn't need a huge meal. We were seated on the balcony overlooking the ocean and my husband's fish was the best he had since we arrived. The wine list was also good.

The nachos and the burnt brussell sprouts as recommended by other reviewers were not disappointing. The main courses we had, the prawns and the ahi tuna, were average. The dessert, the flourless chocolate cake was very good except for the spicy sauce which didn't quite match. The view from our table was good. Street noise was not too noticeable from the second floor balcony. Service was quite friendly. The only complaint was we were not given an extra plate when we shared the dessert.

Went in for a late lunch after an incredible whale watch, and this was a great discovery. Never too impressed with the Lahina scene, and we have eaten at some nice restaurants, but this now might be our go to when in town. I had the Ahi Nachos, more of a salad but excellent. My wife had the Lobster Benedict and it was just as good as mine. We almost forgot to order the Brussel Sprouts which we had read about, and they lived up to the hype. (Why couldn't our parents have made these all the different ways that you now AE on so many menues?) The only criticism I have is the name. We equated it with the touristy Sugar Mill Train, so were a little leary. Glad we decided to go in. Definitely give this one a try. You will not be disappointed. The chef knows what he is doing!

We were in Maui over New Year's, a very busy time of year, and hadn't booked restaurants in advance. We found Sugar Cane Maui through Open Table on short notice and were worried that it wouldn't be particularly good, given its location on the very touristy main drag in Lahaina and the fact that it was available when so many other places were booked up. Our experience exceeded our expectations. Food (I had mahi mahi lau lau) and cocktails were very good, and we enjoyed seeing the sunset right outside the window where we were seated. I found the service a bit obsequious--waiter was trying a little too hard to talk up the chef's prowess and special dishes--but the effort was there. We had our 5-year-old son with us and the waiter and chef were very accommodating when we asked to alter a dish to make it more kid-friendly. Overall, a good experience!

Food was just ok, expected more... Short ribs were fatty and not worth the price

We knowing that they use local ingredients that can't be found anywhere else we enjoyed the salad with ferns from the road to Hanaand locally caught fish prepared creatively lvery disappointed however lon a slow Sunday night it took 40 minutes to get our drinks and everything else was slow. Needing to get up after 2 1/2 hours we went for a walk and found some wonderful gelato down the street

We made a 7:15 reservation at Sugar Cane several hours in advance, and then went to check out the restaurant a few minutes later. The restaurant was empty in mid-afternoon, so the staff encouraged us to pick just the table we wanted. When we arrived at 7:15, there were diners at our chosen table, and they had a different table waiting for us. But we elected to wait for our stated choice, and were finally seated at 7:45. Although our orders were taken promptly, it took Sugar Cane until 8:15 to deliver our appetizers, and it was 9:00 before our entrees came. No explanations came for the very long wait between courses. Our meals were simple fish dishes, and three of them were the same; the remaining dish was a simple shrimp stir-fry. The restaurant was more than half empty by the time we ate, and some diners that arrived after us had left. Service was cheerful when it came, and the food was good, but we were very hungry for much of the time we were at the table, so overall not a great experience.

I really wanted to like this place. I really did. When we first walked in, I loved what they had done to renovate the interior from it's previous life as a BBQ place. It was so cute and the 2-tops out on the patio seemed like a really romantic setting to watch the sunset. We sat for a long time before a server walking by thought to ask if anyone had helped us yet. No. No they had not. She took our drink and appetizer order and disappeared. 20 min later, still sitting at a table with only water we flagged another server and asked if he could help us out. The lady had apparently totally forgotten to ring in the order. Adam tried to turn it around by bringing a drink on the house. He was very friendly and did a great job trying to lighten up the mood. A while later he brought out one appetizer. We asked for soya sauce and it took about 15 min of staring at a plate of sushi before he remembered to bring it. Maybe 15 min later, the other appetizer arrived. The food was good, but on this island with so many AMAZING restaurants, good just doesn`t cut it. The service was so slow and disorganized, especially considering the restaurant was half empty. This place will not be around a year from now, I guarantee it.
