Sugar & Olives Ratings and Reviews
Pleasantly surprised to find this gem in Norwalk. Good, honest, local food simply yet very creatively prepared and served. Quite a short menu but such interesting choices it was still hard to narrow down and could satisfy a broad spectrum of tastes and circumstances. Only solution will be to return often. Completely open kitchen literally and figuratively removes the wall between the chef and cooks and their diners. Waiter/GM/Bartender, Chef and Cook all shared running and bussing responsibilities creating a friendly, homey atmosphere. Decor matches the cooking as it is both simple, unique and creative.
Disappointing. We had a reservation but it seemed like they were not ready to start cooking until a while after we got there. And there were things on the daily menu that they did not have available. It took a long time for our food to come out. The server was nice but very inexperienced. Another server (a man) was better but the chef was very disheveled (looked like she may have had a cold) and not too pleasant and although spoke to us did not welcome us. I believe she is also the owner so that was disappointing. The food was fine but nothing spectacular. Unfortunately we won't be going back for a while. I am rooting for them, however, and hoping this was just a bad day for them.
A great find off the beaten path. Restaurant sources local farm items, so you know the food is fresh. Food is creative, tasty and clean. Their alcohol list is limited, and the drink sizes are small, but the star of the show is the food. I wish they had some menu options for children on the menu, maybe you need to ask.
The highlight? The flavoring and quality of the food and the friendly service! Room for improvement? The menu is very limiting in terms of choices. This is understandable due to the set up of the restaurant but if the menu were more encompassing we would surely dine here regularly. If you have 5 entrees you can't have two of them being a variation of a burger (beef and lamb).
Very limited menu and hard to understand - its like the menu is not formatted correctly. Supposed to be a daily changing menu, based on what is available but the offerings on Saturday night were the same as the menu that was posted online on Wednesday. I had a $20 burger. The bun was way too big for the burger, and it was overcooked. Restaurant supposed to be open until 11:00 but we went back at 10:15 to retrieve something left there and they were closed. Doubtful I will ever go back.
We went on a night where they were hosting a large party and they seemed short staffed. It took a long time for someone to acknowledge us, give us a menu, take a drink order, and bring us water. After waiting for a while, it was clear they had forgotten our drinks and water so we had to go up to the bar to ask.
Food was delicious- all locally sourced and as fresh as could be. Ambience was cool, modern but with a comfy/ cozy/ quaintness to it.
Based on the food, we would try it again... but would check to make sure it wasn't on a night they didn't have another event going on.
Locally sourced ingredients, FRESH, and probably the best Halibut I've had in years. My husband had their burger which he rated as excellent. We loved the ambiance- great music, warm, friendly not formal. Service was perfect. What's not to like? Well to be picky, their chocolate cake truly was superb but the ganache filling was paper thin. For a ganache SO good, standards are a nice thick layer. I did tell the chef.
After looking forward to dining here for so long, I was genuinely disappointed in the poor service and meager portions of food. I loved the space and was very excited about the menu, but it fell really short of my expectations. I walked out feeling hungry (despite paying quite a bit of money) and wondering if there was a hiccup in staffing the Sunday brunch. Quite the opposite of the friendly vibe and delicious food people rave about!
Great funky place off the beaten path. Limited menu, but I had no trouble finding something really appealing. Food was delicious and service really good. Recommended when you want something different: not fancy, but more fun (but not cheap either). Good date night place!
Sunday brunch. had the English Country Brealfast, with shirred eggs (I chose chicken eggs over the duck option) served on top of a hash composed of sweet potato, crispy flavorful duck, and leek. Really great flavor and nice portion. Service is always very helpful and friendly, but it was a little slow and forgetful. Notwithstanding that, everything is always quickly corrected and it's a nice escape in there.
We visited on a snowy evening, so we nearly had the restaurant to ourselves because no one was out. However, the owner was a good sport and served up special cocktails for us. We tried several entrees and shared among friends. The food was solid and the options were creative, although it is not an extensive menu (fine by me). It is well designed and decorated; I would like to return on a busier night too.
Chris was very helpful and friendly. All of our brunch meals were exceptional. We were able to relax and enjoy our visit with friends. Points for the cool music playing in the backround.
We will definitely be back soon to try dinner.
This was our second visit to Sugar & Olives. Our vegetarian son was in town to celebrate his birthday, and we felt this was a great option for that occasion (and we were right!). Others in our party aren't vegetarians, but they were pleased with their selections.
Our only complaint was that the main room (with access to the open kitchen) was full and we were placed in a back room. However, it was quieter in there. The day was too cool for outside seating.
We'll definitely go back for a third visit!
