Hostess was rude but the rest of the night was terrific
We tried to order a martini and were told "no", without reason. Seems odd as we have been able to order a simple martini at other Italian restaurants down the street. The waiter was very rude. The food was mediocre relative to Boston offerings. The restaurant seemed more catered to tourists who would never come back than to locals.
The place is nice a bit packed with small tables all in all I was positively surprised by the food and the service
Excellent food, good service, high top tables in bar were a bit crowded and it was noisy. Seems like if you have a reservation, you should not have to settle for a high top or wait for 20 minutes for your table to be ready.
This restaurant is a total rip-off. Reservations are completely disregarded as it's a tiny restaurant and they keep the tables full. That's why it looks like they have availability all the time - they will take your reservation, but have no intention of honoring it. We had a reservation and waited 45 minutes to be seated, and even then we had to split up our group of 7. Two sat at the bar across the room from the rest of us, and nobody apologized or made any effort to accommodate us. The service was brusque, bordering on rude, and the food was utterly disgusting and horribly overpriced. The North End has become a tourist hellhole and you have to work really hard to find a decent restaurant. This one is NOT it!!
Fantastic!! Meals were very well presented and prepared. Service was great. Loud atmosphere. Just like sitting at my family’s table. We’ve been here many times, and always return.
We went to Strega to celebrate and were treated extremely poorly. We arrived for our reservation on time, but ended up having to wait an hour to be seated - without any explanation or apology. Once we finally sat, we waited another 15 minutes to be approached by a server. We had waited so long that we were ready to order drinks, appetizers, and our entrees at the same time - the food was good but nothing amazing. Our server never again came over to our table, we even had to ask another server for our check. We left very frustrated and underwhelmed by the entire experience.
We had reservations at 7:00 pm didn’t get seated until 8:00pm.
Food was very good... but had to wait 45 mins after confirmed reservation to be seated. Our table shouldn't have been set up as a dining spot, it was right next to door that was open to freezing temps most of the evening to allow more patrons to enter. All the waiting patrons then hovered around our table as it was in the middle of the waiting area. The clearly overbook reservations.
Food was very good however service was not great. They were way behind on seating people. Got seated 30 minutes after our reservation at an extremely small table in the corner of the bar. When we left they were 60 minutes behind schedule.
Food was absolutely outstanding!! The place is small and was super crowded. No place to stand when waiting.
Our waiter Carl made our night! So friendly & always making sure my family and I were comfortable. We started with a prosciutto, tomato & mozzarella appetizer which was mouth watering. My mom & I got the bolognese, which is the staple & always on point! My father got the meat special with sausage, meatball (it was MASSIVE), and more. I can't wait to return!!
I have traveled all over the world and Strega is the best Italian food, experience and dining option in the US. The food is simply authentic and amazing. The waiters and service is the best. If you want to have a meal you will never forget, eat at Strega.
Had a wonderful dinner for my daughters birthday.
There are multiple reasons my company and I shared a poor experience at Strega-North End.
1) The temperature in the restaurant was extremely cold. I had asked our server to raise the temp and he said he did but we got there at 12 and left at 1:30ish still feeling like we should have kept our jackets on. It was a cold day on 1/31 but something should have been done about the temperature.
2) I had reserved a table for a party of 6 people. When we arrived, we were the only guests in the restaurant with the exception of two guests seated at the bar for drinks. I felt that the server was not attentive to us during our meal- the bus person paid more attention to our table then he did.
3) The lobster ravioli that was ordered by one of the members of my party arrived cold. They did not say this to me until after we left, otherwise I would have sent it back to the kitchen.
4) The server also failed to inform me that gratuity was to be included in our check total, including tax. My experience has been that if gratuity is included, the server will inform the guests or it would be mentioned as apart of the reservation confirmation and/or menu. Besides not having notice of what may be a policy for parties of 6 or more- gratuity should be added in without tax.
I've dined in the Strega Waterfront space previously which was a great experience so I expected that same level of service, food, atmosphere etc. Strega North End did disappoint and i do not plan to return.
Very nice restaurant, with good fresh food in a cozy atmosphere
The place was packed and we didn't end up eating there. We had an 830pm reservation and by 845pm a bunch of 8pm reservations were not even seated yet, so we were not optimistic we would be seated either. There was also no waiting room area and people in the cold doorway waiting to get in. We left the madness and went elsewhere to eat.
Went for my boyfriend’s birthday this past weekend and it was fabulous. Our server was wonderful, we sat near the bar and everything was so delicious. We are still talking about the avocado crab salad and the shrimp bruschetta. Amazing, we will definitely be back and will be recommending to friends.
Booked a table of 8 for my wife’s birthday and when we arrived at Strega there was a crowd of people on the sidewalk (in 25 degree weather) and even more packed in the entryway. After squeezing thru the crowd, I learned that people had been waiting over 1 hour to be seated after booking on Opentable. We were told 1/2 hour... as people surrounding me chuckled. The hostess did not offer to take my phone number so, like everyone else, we were expected to wait outside in the freezing cold and hope her 1/2 hour wasn’t a lie. Well, it was. 45 minutes later we were still waiting and losing our window to eat before the Improv show down the street. So, with no alternative - and a very cold birthday girl, we grabbed slices of pizza and declared our Strega experience and my wife’s birthday dinner an official disaster. Strega totally ruined what was supposed to be a very special evening. Thanks.
We made a reservation for 7:30pm for 5 people on a Saturday night for my birthday dinner. We arrived a few minutes before 7:30pm, the entryway, bar and sidewalk were packed with people waiting for their tables. We were told our table would be ready in a few minutes. After waiting 30 minutes we checked in again and were told it would be a few more minutes. The hostess said they were very busy because of the Celtics game (ok, isn't that why you take reservations?). We spoke to the manager and he said he would "make it worth our while" once we sat down but still couldn't give us an estimate of when we would be sat.
After overhearing another party who had a reservation for 7pm for 8 people say that they still hadn't been sat after 8pm, as we had the babysitter waiting at home we figured there was no hope for us and left and ate elsewhere. Disappointed in the disorganization of the staff, I was excited to try this restaurant but will probably not be back.
The food and wait staff were excellent. The hostess was pleasant but when our reservation wasn’t reached 15 minutes after the appointed time and we were told just another 10 or so, we did not think we’d have to wait an hour. We will not return as a consequence.
Waited 30 min beyond our reservation-a very busy night there
Noisy as was expected
Food and service top notch
Always a must visit for us when in Boston and that will not change
We made a reservation for 7:00 and we not sat til 8:20. We watched the entire restaurant be cleared and sat again in that the hour 20 minutes we waited. They sent over apps to apologize but we had to rush through dinner so we didn’t miss our show at 10
$34 for tina tiny pasta and 2 small pieces of lobster in an ok wine sauce is ridiculous.
Excellent service!! Food is consistently fabulous. Complements to the chef.
Our waiter was really what made the experience for us. He was from Rome and talked to both my parents about the “old country” and shook my dads hand as we left. It was a big sign of respect to my father who was visiting from out of town and they want to go back now each time.
Also the mushroom ravioli’s in truffle sauce were dope and should be a permanent menu item
Great spot. The food was amazing. We ordered one off of the menu and one special and split both. Excellent. A slow and delicious meal.
Beautiful place, beautiful food! Worth every penny! Service was great. Definitely a North End gem. So glad we were able to dine here on our last night in town.
Gianni has been my waiter since 2003. He always has the best suggestions on what to order. Their food never disappoints!
We were 14 for dinner and waiter suggested family style meal. We had appetizers of calamari, burrata, polpette, then had 4 different pastas, steak, cod, salads etc. perfect meal for a large crowd.
Only negative: didn’t get seated for 35 minutes after reservation
Food was fantastic
Waiter was not helpful. Asking for guidance on which dish to get, I got “which do you prefer—blondes or brunettes” without any real help with the information. We also had to ask for bread twice and ask for Parmesan twice. No attention to customer service. Food was bang up though I highly recommend the meatball appetizer. I would suffer through the horrible service again just to eat the meatball alone. Also make sure you ask for a table not near the door because it’s really drafty and people are constantly cycling in and out.
Had reservations for 7pm. Arrived at 6:55pm and we were seated right away. Ordered a bottle of wine which appeared 2 minutes later. Ordered an appetizer which came in less than 5 minutes. Ordered entrees which came in less than 10 minutes. In and out the door in about 35 minutes. Before you say, this guy is complaining the service was too fast? Yes...I am. We felt very rushed. We had a 1/2 of a $50 bottle of wine left b/c of how quick everything was and felt like we couldn't stay and finish. No one did anything to make us feel this way specifically, but everyone knows staying at a table for too long after you pay the bill isn't appropriate. I'm all for efficient service, but this was a bit much. I will say our food was good, however portion sizes of 2 of our 3 dishes were small for the price. Additionally, the burrata special was $25! Way over priced in my opinion for a cheese appetizer. I've been to this restaurant a few times and had a great experience, if tonight was my first, it might be my last. I will be back though.
Fantastic!!! Have been here once before with my husband but this time took a group of friends from out of town, NOT disappointed at all. Service is exceptional as well as the food . We had a great time!!
Totally enjoyed our meals. Friendly atmosphere. Very accommodating. They created a dish that catered to my preferences. It was a fun evening. Great wine selection as well.
Good food, too bright for my liking would recommend but not necessarily return myself.
Strega is our go to restaurant in the North End. My husband and I have been coming here for years. We always bring friends and family here The food is always great. We always have Carlo as our server and we love him.
To sum up a visit to Strega in one word: disappointed. My main criticisms are I didn’t like my veal Il Fagottino (too rich and salty, swimming in thin foul tasting sauce) and the waiter never asked if we were satisfied with the food. When he brought the check, I mentioned my entree to which he ignored me. Otherwise, we were seated promptly, the place is very loud (couldn’t hear waiter running through the specials), the crisp Orvietto wine was good, the eggplant appetizer could have been hotter, chicken Sorrentina was just ok, Fettuccine Strega was the best. Be aware that the prices posted on Open Table are way out of date: all entrees have gone up by $6.00.
Our table was ready when we arrived. The service was excellent. The food was delicious.
The quintessential restaurant in Boston's North End. Strega has it all. Great food, a tremendous wine list and terrific caring staff. Carlo Ianniciello, The General Manager actually served us and it made it a delightful evening. My wife and I can't wait to return.
