Our party of 5 had a celebratory dinner; seated at 8 p.m. in a large, quiet room comfortable for indoor dining during the pandemic. Pre-dinner cocktails were inventive, entrees were exceptionally delicious, from short ribs, moules frites, duck al'orange to sole meuniere; the lemon cake for dessert was phenomenal.
When in the Santa Barbara area, this restaurant will become our "go to."
The portions are typically European, and not a surprise, but we would have enjoyed more vegetables on the plate. The food was delicious and the wine list has something for everyone.
Amazing food, service, interior.
I strongly recommend this place!
Top 3 favorite restaurant west of the Mississippi
Francois, the bartender / waiter gave us excellent service! He had great recommendations, was accommodating and attentive! The food was creative and delicious , with a fancy flair on escargot (parsley) and frog legs I have never encountered before! And the Chocolate Desert with Berries was to die for!
Excellent food for a very special occasion!
Excellent salmon !
Food and service excellent. It was a little cold in the 'green house'. The heaters were not functioning.
We had a party of 18 and the wait staff was AWESOME. Great food, great times. Highly recommended!
This was absolutely outstanding! Romantic, excellent service, the chef accommodated allergies, the food was delicious.
What a lovely French restaurant. They really do it right! Beautiful decor, French music and soft vocal jazz, wonderful food and service. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Love Stella Mare! Took a friend there for his birthday (it's always one of our considerations). Although it's cozy and can feel romantic, it's also completely comfortable for friends. Food was delicious, as usual.
We had a salad, onion soup and pate appetizer, and we didn't find it a good value for the money. Onion soup was ok, but the rest - not particularly delicious. It was a Halloween night and waiters were dressed in doctor's scrubs with face masks of course which I guess was meant as a play on the current pandemic as well. But we thought the idea was ridiculous and bad: I wouldn't want to be served by doctors and nurses and be reminded yet again that we are struggling through the disease outbreak. With the French rustic look of the restaurant, I felt like I was in some sort of rural sanatorium for sick people courted by doctors.
Approaching Stella Mare, you feel as if you've found an enchanted home. A secret garden nobody knows about. The atrium all lit up was a welcome surprise. Our food was delicious and the service was great. We will definitely come back.
Delicious onion soup followed by duck l'orange. Service was wonderful.
Seated outside, under twinkling lights, with French music playing QUIETLY in the background, we felt like we were in he French countryside. The food was excellent, and the service as well. A lovely evening.
We had a wonderful dining experience. Thank you. We will be back.
This small french restaurant is top notch and deserves the great praise it receives. I will visit each time I am in Santa Barbara.
Stella Mare's is consistantly a pleasurable experience, all the way around.
It was great . Our waitress was really nice, she made food and wine recommendations that we enjoyed very much.
A quiet dinner out to celebrate or 17th wedding anniversary and Stella Mare’s didn’t disappoint. The service was excellent and the food was amazing.
Terrific food and great service by the the entire staff. Extra kudos to Carol our server.
Despite Covid, we chose to dine in the glass atrium because there were very few diners at the hour we were there. Delicious duck a a'orange, escarole/apple salad. Server was attentive and friendly. Highly recommend
We loved the outside sitting for dinner, romantic feeling. My husband and I shared the Bibb lettuce salad was refreshing and the interesting grilled artichoke. My husband had the SOLE MEUNIÉRE and I had the SALMON ALMANDINE. Both delicious for fish lovers:). Service was well-timed and very friendly, wines were affordable. We will definitively be back in a future trip to Santa Barbara.
VERY Charming. Traditional French food with California flair that is really well prepared. Loved the garden setting. I ordered the Duck L'orange and was pleased with the preparation - perfectly cooked, nice plating. Stella Mare may become my favorite local SB restaurant. Will absolutely return.
This is a lovely place to dine. It was nice to be able to eat inside again. The dover sole was a tad on the salty side and the side vegetables could be a bit more generous, but overall a nice experience.
Fifty character limit, not quite there. More characters
My wife and I will use any excuse to come here, so we bet on the winner of the French Open tennis tournament and and Rafa won, so I lost, but not really because Stella Mare’s is our favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara. Five stars all the way around, and Nelson is a superb server. We sometimes love just to have escargot, pate, some other appetizer and martinis, which we did on Friday. Very excellent and satisfying in every way. Have been regulars since they opened over 20 years ago and have always been delighted.
We had an absolutely wonderful romantic evening ! The food was excellent and so was the ambience . We will definitely return there every time we visit Santa Barbara !
We’ve anxiously awaited the re-opening of Stella Mares and looked forward to our first meal back. We normally enjoy lunch at SM, but that wasn’t on offer so we “settled” for dinner and opted to eat outdoors. The front terrace was very attractively set to accommodate socially distanced dining and felt very “normal.”
We started with a grilled artichoke, which was tasty, al dente, and messy to eat. Probably won’t do that dish again. My spouse had the short rib special, which she enjoyed (but found a bit salty for her taste) and I had a wonderful duck breast perfectly cooked to a nice pink with a tasty orange finish. We paired our meal with an inexpensive and OK white Bordeaux, which wasn’t the right wine for the meals but suited my wife’s preferences.
Our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and friendly. She enhanced the dining experience.
We will definitely be back and look forward to a return to relaxed lunches with omelettes, frites and Sancerre.
The food was delicious with great new menu items. Service was excellent, as it's always been. Sitting outside was a really nice change of pace. It felt more casual, in a way, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get out! We've all been through a lot, and things continue to be stressful and challenging, so treat yourself to a wonderful dinner and a nice glass of wine!
Stellar Mares has style and the location is good for outside dining when the weather permits. The good is excellent, but the only fish choice is Salmon, I recommend adding Halibut in season and Deep Sea Scallops year round.
At present Stella Mares is open only for dinner. But it is also a charming place for lunch.
An amazing place with excellent food and service.
Good and tasty food. Friendly personal.
Would be back again.
One of our favorites. One of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara County.
Amazing as always! Somehow the food has gotten even better and the service was impeccable.
Great infrastructure ambience.
Dining at Stella Mares was delightful. The waitstaff is quick, efficient and as friendly as possible. Carole was our waitress and we were delighted with her sweet and outgoing personality and her efficiency. The food was spectacular and cooked exactly as we ordered it. Dessert is a “must have” item and they are so perfectly created with a beautiful presentation. The ambiance there is one that others can only aspire to. Extremely highly recommended!
Fantastic, I would recommend this pace to anyone! It had been years since I had escargot.
