About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
After 14-plus years, St. Jack has become an iconic staple of the PDX dining scene, in the wonderfully walkable "Slabtown" neighborhood of NW Portland. Chef and restaurateur Aaron Barnett's unique menu features rustic dishes from the countryside of Lyon - the heart and soul of French cooking.

We are excited to offer full service inside, as well as outside on our sidewalk tables (weather permitting). We also allow walk-up guests as space allows - Fridays and Saturdays it is highly recommended to make reservations.

Our full menu is also available at the bar counter.

We had an exceptional evening at St Jack. While there were a few awkward moments with the staff, the food made up for it. When we first arrived with a reservation, they didn't have a table for 5 ready for us, and tried to put us at a table for 4 with a person on the end. They adjusted after we asked, stating that the tables I asked them to put together were not available when we arrived; however, that was a little like putting it on the diner because they did know we were coming. I had written on the reservation that it was my son's birthday, but they seemed unaware until I mentioned it, and then he got a scoop of ice cream with a candle. We were a late seating at 7:30, but not the only table still seated when we left, and we didn't get any kind of a thank you or goodbye. All minor things, but they do affect the whole experience, especially when you are at a high-end restaurant. But the food, oh the food, was marvelous. We started with lovely oysters that were scrumptuous, went on the bread and butter, light and fluffy with the perfect level of salt. The Gougeres warm from the oven were amazing, as was the chicken liver mousse. I thought the tartar de boeuf was very flavorful, but if you are a traditionalist, as some of my family they didn't love it as much but still liked it very much. My husband had the Sole, and it was an amazing surprise and would be my choice if I ate there again. The moules were lovely, and the curry broth you just want to drink straight from the bowl. The steak frite well well-cooked and fries w/the bernaise sauce were lovely (though a tad bit salty). We indulged in all three of their desserts, and the table was split between the Strawberry Choux and the Meyer Lemon Coeur a la crème as the best. Both were exceptional. All in all, a great Birthday Dinner, and we would definitely recommend St. Jack.

I sat at the chef’s counter and had a wonderful dinner: the cucumber crab gazpacho was nuanced and delicious with balanced spicy notes. “Rack of sole” with morels, tarragon, and sauce Americain was truly impressive. And wine choices and advice were generous and perfect. This is an excellent restaurant with high standards—not inexpensive, but based on the effort I saw in the kitchen, the quality and complexity of the cooking, and the service I received, it’s absolutely worth the price.

Service was very lacking. Drinks took FOREVER, finally got one after asking twice and waiting almost 40 minutes. Decided not to order another based on wait time. Overall, it was an off night for the restaurant. I was really excited to try this restaurant when visiting Portland. The food was okay, oysters and steak tartare where the best dishes of the items ordered. Would not recommend or go back.

Amazing dinner with bold fabulous French flavors. The steak tartare especially was delicious, served in a butter lettuce leaf.

It was not our first time in St. Jack. We were thrilled to come there on a weekday because it is open 7 days a week. We were happy to try new appetizers and entrees. We loved Foie Gras Tart. Mussels and Halibut were delicious and 5 stars for Chocolate Grand Marnier Choux Bun dessert. The wine was very good and the service was excellent. We highly recommend this restaurant for special celebrations or just for unforgettable romantic dinners. Thank you for another great experience,
