Good food, good choices. Bit spendy. Service was excellent.
The food was excellent. We started with white wine and a cheese course, which was thoughtfully paired with currants, preserves, and honey. We then had the steak frites, which were superb. Service was excellent and the ambiance was very nice as well.
I hit every restaurant in Portland worth returning to about once a year and just did St. Jacks. The cheese plate and champagne were very good. The duck was alright but nothing extraordinary. The rabbit was good and the wines were good. $200 before tip. So worth going, especially if something on the list of specials interests you.
Incredible meal! The chicken liver mousse was smooth and flavorful. Ordered a nice cheese to start, too. I ordered the gnocchi and they were light and delicious- surrounded by the most beautiful vegetables! My husband had the 10 oz steak frites - also perfect. We shared a clafoutis for dessert, but I wished we had ordered the profiteroles!
High prices were absolutely not justified by the quality of the food. To be specific: duck breast was utterly unexceptional, accompanying lentils were too heavily salted, endive not interesting at all and drowned in a too-sweet sauce. A gnocchi dish was an incoherent combination of flavors. I know that it is the fashion to keep adding ingredients and flavors in an attempt to seem sophisticated, but it was not well done here. Simpler dishes we tried (fried tripe, green salad, and steak frites) were much better.
The restaurant is neither spacious nor quiet.
For the prices St Jack is charging, I would have expected a more elegant environment and consistently excellent food. This was more like a neighborhood bistro with an overly ambitious chef and fine-dining prices.
The mussels were outstanding, the best!!! We sat at the counter, it was a little too close to the ovens. Next time we will sit outside or at the bar. The dining room is a little noisy. Went with a girlfriend for the first time, taking my husband next Friday night. Can't wait!
I had a great experience in the past so I revisited again but this time for a business dinner.
I am quite disappointed this time. Overall still service was great. But air conditioning was not working and it was uncomfortably hot in the dining area. No air and smell from the kitchen was not good. And the food was too much. I ordered a salmon collar and tail but the food was enormous and too much french fries. It was explained well. It was too noisy that business conversation was difficult. Overall it didn't meet my expectation at all.
My wife had lamb t bone which was excellent. I had tartare (excellent) and grilled/barbecued sweetbreads. They were overwhelmed by the cooking. The sauce they were serviced with eas excellent
Good place and Albacore Tuna main course was outstanding as well as my son’s Steak Frites. Tomato salad while pretty was overdone ( melted cheese too strong) and you could not taste the tomatoes.
Overall a great place.
We enjoyed our meal but it was almost too "saucey". The sweetbreads and the tripe were off the charts. I could see though that those selections might not appeal to the less sophisticated palate, but they really should try them. They would not be disappointed. The gnocchi was awesome, but that is why I said a little too "saucey". Don't get me wrong, it tasted delicious, but there was just a little too much sauce to accompany the veggies and gnocchi. Yes, I would return, but not for awhile just because it is a really rich meal.
Excellent food as always. They always blow my mind with the daily specials. Items were selling out quickly while we were deciding, so if you hear something good in the specials..speak up! The ONLY complaint that has NOTHING to do with their excellent service and menu is that it was very loud on the dining side of the restaurant and it was hard to hear anyone at the table except the person next to me. Difficult for older patrons. My parents were really struggling. Otherwise, incredible food and service.
I love the food at St. Jack's--but it is SO NOISY. I wish they would turn the music down or something to let us have intimate conversation there--since the atmosphere otherwise is conducive to that.
Thank you. The food was excellent and the service was wonderful. We had a party of 7 with one seven-year old boy and dealing with a child in a room filled with adults can be trying for servers, but they handled everything with composure and kindness.
Delicious for start to finish. We’ll definitely be heading there again!
have gone therefor years and enjoy the staff and food
One of our favorite Portland restaurants. Meals are consistently delicious and service is always very good. You won't be disappointed!
Food was fantastic and our server, Shannon, was great and gave us wonderful recommendations for food and wine.
Amazing food and incredible service. One of the best meals we’ve had in a long time.
St. Jack does a great job presenting traditional French cuisine with a modern/NW twist. Everything is delicious and in season. I've been visiting since their location off Division and they're really going from strength to strength. Consistently great.
Great service - great food, drinks, wine. Noisy restaurant with open kitchen and hard walls/floors. But can be a lot of fun.
French bistro type fare, very good food! Service was wonderful - overall excellent evening!
The food was great, but the kitchen and service was disorganized.
Great meal and wine list
Expensive even by Portland standards and very slow service didn’t make up for the food, which was good. Not a good value in my opinion.
Fantastic as usual!
overpriced and underwhelming. way too noisy. the portions were a bit too small, as well.
Nice food, but a little bit overpriced. Payed 200$ for a dinner
Our server was fantastic, had great recommendations, and kept up with our active drinking occasion. We had so much fun sitting outside and the food was phenomenal.
My wife and I chose St Jack to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary, and it did not disappoint. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of bubbly. The food was really well prepared, and thought it was pretty fairly priced. My wife and I both left satisfied and would definitely return.
The only negative from our meal, was that there was a large group ~20 people behind us that were fairly loud, but that isn’t necessarily the restaurants fault. Dining room isn’t huge so a group of that size creates some noise. Overall though didn’t really effect our meal.
Saint Jack was recommended by a travel writer friend. I love French cuisine so I was excited to try it. We were celebrating a birthday and it was a special night. The oysters were delicious, The prawns were so so...stick with the oysters if you’re having trouble choosing. I had a hell of it and it was good but not out of this world. All of the sauces were delicious as is to be expected in a French restaurant. The food was well presented and the place was beautiful and had a great vibe. The service was only mediocre for a restaurant of that caliber but I chalk that up to perhaps experience. There’s always plenty of time to learn.
Appetizers are good, some are very good. Entrees are just average. Its supposed to be French inspired so it would be nice to have things like snails n the menu. The wait staff was excellent.
Dissapointed in the food. Bavette was tough. No ketchup available for the steak frites, how pretentious. Lamb chop was difficult to cut around the bone. Service was outstanding. Corkage fee of $30 is outrageous. We will not be back.
I booked this at the request of my out of town guests. Not my cup of tea (I’m a vegetarian), but I wanted to make them happy. They thought the food was good, but not as exceptional as the reviews they’d read. My friends wanted to order multiple things and share in order to taste a little of everything. We one entree and multiple appetizers and sides to share; plus drinks. Our server seemed a little put-off that two of us did not order entrees. She visited our table a total of 7 times after we ordered, solely to inquire if we wanted to order more entrees. She was slightly annoying, and didn’t try very hard to conceal her disdain. Could have done without the pressure & condescending tone of the server.
This is a wonderful restaurant for people who want traditional French food but with a Northwest twist. And for you raw fans--their hand cut steak tartar is terrific. Service is attentive and very friendly. You do need reservations for the dining room. A great dining experience!
Fantastic from the moment we arrived to the end
Outstanding meal. Highlights were the fresh oysters, asparagus salad, seared halibut au verjus and the gnocchi with artichoke, fiddle head ferns and oyster mushrooms. Great wine list
Pricey but delicious and authentic French meals everytime we dine here. I am a snob about butter lettuce salads, and St Jack's is in my top two favorites! I can never finish my steak frites, but my leftover steak scrambled with eggs the next day is always a treat. Service and drinks consistently good.
wonderful service. amazing food and wine selection. fantastic ambiance.
Amazing burger and fries were amazing, would definitely come back.
I was a reluctant guest as I'm generally not a fan of french food but just goes to show you can teach old dogs new tricks. Service was excellent, the place smelled outrageous and every bite was awesome. I will defiantly go back. Great place.
