Splash Seafood Bar and Grill
Wonderful, unique food, quiet, and unique space. We will go return.
It is expensive but worth it for special meals.
Nice atmosphere. felt the prices were too high and being charged for ice in a drink is not appreciated.
Our waiter rocked the whole experience. Food was okay... not awesome but he made it great!
Great food! Great service and an all round excellent experience
Great time, great food. Server was very knowledgeable and friendly. When we did stump her with a question, she was happy to go find us an answer and come right back. Had a drink at the bar before our reservation and both bartenders were awesome. Will absolutely be back soon.
Food was subpar for price, service was poor and the restaurant is in need of reno.
What this feels like is an expense account restaurant, as in, who orders the three figure caviars?. Prices are goofy high across the board for Des Moines and neither the kitchen's ability with all this expensive flown-in protein or the friendly but non-fine dining trained staff make it worth the money - unless, of course, your company is paying to impress some client.
Went with our 15 year old daughter for our 20th anniversary. Seafood platter (small) was extraordinarily fresh and more than enough for one adult. My husband had the ciapinno and it was fantastic. Scallops like buttah!!! Daughter got the special, a veal porterhouse but she didn't like the Demi glace so they happily took it back without charging us. Great server. Wonderful atmosphere with dim mood lighting. Chairs crazy comfortable. Large party next to us was very loud but that's not Splash's fault. Excellent evening overall.
Great service and excellent food
I got the Chilean sea bass, I have had a variety of sea bass, Chilean, Mexican & Panamanian. I don’t believe what I received was Chilean because it was not a buttery melt in my mouth which is what I have experienced in the past with Chilean sea bass. The experience I tasted more similar to Mexican sea bass. It was just my taste buds was expecting a buttery experience and didn’t get. My companions received the mixed grill and enjoyed it immensely.
My fiance and I went to Splash for the first time on a whim for a nice night out, and absolutely loved the atmosphere and the food. Some of the best seafood I have ever eaten, it was prepared so well.
Don't sleep on the steaks at Splash. The NY Strip here is consistently one of the best steaks I eat each year.
My wife got the 12oz filet and it looked freaking fantastic as well. The char they get on their steaks is the best in Des Moines.
But get seafood if you hate yourself.
Food was fantastic! But a little on the pricey side. Luckily, had a "coupon" to get $40.00 off a $100.00 bill 😉. Will definitely go again, especially if have another coupon/special!
We had a wonderful, delicious dinner. The Splash chicken was wonderful as was the swordfish.
Weird ambiance. Slow service. Music overpowers conversation. Overpriced food for the quality.
Amazing seafood. So delicious. We had sea bass and scallops. The acoustics are great. We could talk at dinner without shouting and hear each other. Tables are placed so everyone had plenty of space.
The scallops at Splash are second to none. However I ordered asparagus as my side and received only three short spears, very skimpy for the price of the entree. The lobster mac and cheese wasn't to my liking, salty and not much lobster meat, at an extra charge of $14 for it.
My guest and I were seated at 5:30 and informed our waitress that we had tickets to a show that started at 7pm across the street so she would be aware of our time constraint. After delivering our drinks she disappeared for approximately 15 minutes. We ordered our entree at shortly before 6. We again reminded her of our time issue. We finally got our food at 6:40 and one of the entrees was only luke warm. We literally had to shovel the food in our mouths and still didn’t have a chance to finish. My entree tasted wonderful but I had no chance to enjoy it.
We were seated at 5:35, ordered at 5:45 and our meals were delivered one hour later and my wife’s scallops were cold. Because we were headed to a show at the Civic Center, we didn’t have time to finish eating. Not even close to being worth the $230, will certainly not be returning or recommending Splash to anyone.
My girlfriend and I are avid seafood fanatics. Prices weren’t bad but portions were small for the price. We got a on of the mussels and they were very good. Then our main course came and neither of us were impressed. I wouldn’t pay $100 for the food we received there again.
Best seafood joint in DSM if your wallet allows it.
Splash is somewhere we go on special occasions, normally a few times a year. We ordered the grilled octopus as an appetizer, scallops and sea bass for our main. Highly recommend the octopus and it was presented very nicely. The mains were great as well and the prices is what you will pay anywhere in a good restaurant. Timing was perfect, not rushed and not to slow. Service was outstanding, as always.
We have been going to Splash about 5 years now and always went home happy. We would rather pay a little more for the atmosphere and quality of food then go to some franchise restaurant for sub-par food and allot of background noise.
Our server is out of this world great
She made our anniversary absolutely wonderful, thanks
Delicious seafood dishes, served by caring waitstaff. I think the authentic flavors of our dishes would be hard to beat in Des Moines. It was a pleasure dining in this restaurant.
Everything was awesome. Our waitress went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with everything. She was knowledgable, friendly and checked in on us just the right amount.
We finally ate here after locals said it was too pricey. We found the wine list offered nice and reasonably priced selections and our meal was excellent. Monty was our waiter and I give him 5 stars for knowledge, recommendations and a great personality.
The waitress was great at making suggestions
Don't order the beet salad unless you like your beets pickled which is not stated on the menu. My partner would not have ordered if he'd known and waitress did not offer to take it off our bill. We asked our waitress to give us time between courses since we like to enjoy our meals at a leisurely pace. Instead, dinner was a sprint and we had to eat fast to keep up. Salads came as soon as oysters were whisked away. I hadn't finished my salad before entrees arrived. When I complained to the waitress, she offered to go find my unfinished salad - yuck! So we had a 3 course meal and chugged a bottle of wine in under an hour. We eat at Splash regularly and this is not our usual experience. We'll hope for a different waitress next time.
I had a $40 off $100, so it's really the only reason we even tried the higher priced meals ($65 for a steamed lobster, and two sides). We asked for water with our meals, and were offered sparkling, bottled, or tap, but weren't told there would be additional charges for non-tap. It was $3 each as she got the bottled, I got the sparkling. Those bottles come with a ridiculous mark up, obviously. The food was good, but not very good. The service was good, besides not knowing that the water options cost more, when presented as equal options to tap water just on preference. I really can't recommend this placed based on value. The food wasn't exactly mind blowing to justify the cost, and $65 for a steamed 2 lb lobster is a lot of money. The food is just generally way overpriced. You can get just as good of a lobster for half the price at Red Lobster, or probably many other places that serve lobster, and with no distinguishable difference in quality.
Dined during Splash's birthday promotion. Restaurant was very busy--busier than normal. The food, as always, was quite good. I was disappointed that we presented our waitress with a coupon for the restaurant's birthday promotion, a $40 discount for the purchase of $100 or more, but when she delivered the bill, we discovered that the discount had not been given. It took more than 15 minutes for her to return to our table before we could request that the discount be applied.
Splash has always been, and remains, a favorite restaurant of ours. However, I have two suggestions I'd like Bruce Gerleman to consider. First, please update your furniture. Your table seating is badly worn, and many of the chairs are chairs in name only. Secondly, I'm disappointed in some of the recent menu changes. Splash has always had the BEST escargot in town. These are difficult to find in a Des Moines restaurant, and I'm distressed that Splash has discontinued them. Please reconsider--even if the cost needs to be increased
It is on the expensive side but they make it worthwhile. I noted on the reservation that it was my birthday and they printed out special menus that we could keep. They have special seasonal dishes with interesting ingredients.
Our server was good, but the overall service was slow. They were unable to make their award winning cocktail because "all of Iowa was out of special cherries." The shrimp risotto only had one whole shrimp and nothing else that could be seen to be shrimp of any description. We have been going to Splash for years and I have been disappointed with our last two visits.
Food was excellent. We wished we would have saved room for dessert!
The food was way too expensive for the size portions that you get. The shrimp scampi was skimpy more than anything. Bland, no flavor and tasted more like wet shrimp. The clam dish platter that I had was way over priced. I wouldn't come back here if you gave me a free meal.
Definitely one the best dining experiences in metro Des Moines! It never disappoints and has such a wide variety of fresh fish and shell fish — so you can be assured that you and your guests will have the entree and preparation to their liking... And a nice and not overpriced wine list is another positive...
We always go every year for our Anniversary, because that’s where we had our first date 7 years ago. Monte our server was excited....we had him last year also. Always a great experience.
We live full time in Florida, and we can't think of a better seafood restaurant than right here in Des Moines! The Sea Bass is outstanding, and so are the scallops! Don't miss out … be sure to go there!
Food was very good but also expensive. Lackadaisical service. Had to ask for bread, not offered additional drinks. Usually get free dessert for birthday, but was not offered although we had indicated”birthday” under special occasion in reservation.
Is pricey, but good seafood in the Midwest usually is. And it was good, service was excellent.
Splash is always a special experience. Wine menu is incredible and very reasonable . Everything is expertly prepared and service always exceptional.
