Hit and miss - very poor service. The clam chowder was incredible, great bread, we liked the oysters, but sent back the extremely salty crab salad. It took them 20 mins to get a glass of wine to the table, and that with a little attitude. Overall a disappoint on our first evening in Portland.
Brussels sprouts are to die for. We went during Portland dining month but only half our table ordered off the special menu because the regular menu is so appealing. The portion sizes are on the larger side for Portland, and for Portland dining month they were the same size as normal dishes. We were impressed and the leftovers were amazing. Seriously though, get the Brussels sprouts.
Always great place to stop before a show
My husband and I greatly enjoyed our meal at Southpark. We ordered from the dining month menu, which provided wonderful food at a good value. I had the brussels sprouts (excellent) and my husband had the beet salad. Both portions were very generous, and the flavor combinations were interesting and successful. My husband had the flatiron steak and I had the steelhead. The meat was well seasoned and well cooked, and the accompaniments worked well with the meat and, again, were generous, interesting and flavorful. The dessert portions were smaller, but they were the perfect way to end a good meal.
Needed something to eat after the symphony. Awesome oyster bar (maybe the best in town!). Great champagne choices. Great service, ambience. I know where we'll go after symphony (here).
When we are in Portland we always try to enjoy a meal at Southpark. The food is excellent and the service is top notch. They never disappoint.
Really Great food. Loved the oysters. Service was friendly and attentive. We sat in the bar prior to our reservation to enjoy a couple drinks and the bartenders were great, really friendly with awesome recommendations. We will definitely be back.
The food is amazing! The service was ok. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and the gluten free options. The timing of the courses was right on track. You finished one dish right when they brought out the next. My only issue with this place is how long it took us to order and pay. We sat for about 20 minutes before we got our drinks and we ordered those the first time the waiter saw us. It took anther 20 minutes before we could order our food. The waiter forgot to bring us the special menu and stopped by twice mentioning menu items but not letting us ask questions. When I finally got to ask about gluten free options he knew them all along with modifications. When we were finished it took a long time to get the check. We were there for 2.5 hours total. We did get 3 courses, but we did not need to be there that long. This is not a wick dining option, so if you need to be anywhere afterwards, give yourself plenty of time and tell the staff of time constraints.
Such a reliably professional but friendly place, it's one of my favorite business lunch locations. The menu offers a nice range of offerings without over-saturation or trying too hard. Service is always excellent and as attentive as you want it to be. Open floor plan makes you part of something interesting without having to share your conversation -- or anyone else's. I've liked it here for a long time; changes that have occurred never disappointed me, and I expect it will be a go-to place for me for many years.
Nice restaurant for a casual or more formal meal. Not too loud to talk. Interesting wine flights.
We (hubby and I) have eaten here many times. This last time was a little disappointing. It is a fairly pricey restaurant, and we did not feel that the value or the food was that great. Usually we stick with the tried and true: the clam chowder is the best I've ever had, the salmon tartare is delicious, the oysters are always fresh. This time I wanted to try something different. I had the fried chicken on a dutch baby. It was okay; the chicken was tender and the coating flavorful. However, overall it had a slightly burnt flavor.
My husband had the house green salad, a simple mixed veggie salad. Worth $9? Not even. Then he had steamed Manila clams. Only about 1/2 of the shells had meat in them. He was compted a half-order more. These were meaty and satisfying but the original order should have been.
We'll be back, but not soon. And we'll stick with the proven favorites.
A friend and I each ordered the March Dining Month special. Huge portions! Great Brussels spouts, beet salad and perfectly cooked salmon over beans and greens. Perfect.
Excellent experience at Southpark Seafood. Our server, Steven, was very knowledgeable and helped guide us through the impressive menu. It was hard to decide what to order with so many tasty selections!
My husband was thrilled with the oyster selections, which were extremely fresh. I recommend the salmon tartare and smoked scallops. Both delicious and high quality!
We will certainly visit again to try different menu items.
Love the menu which is so varied. The food is excellent, the wait staff is knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Always a fine evening of dining, especially before an event at The Performing Arts Center across the street.
Great food, great wine, great service and great value for March restaurant month.
The food was good. Nothing special, but that's OK because it was a pre-theater dinner. We were in no rush. The waiter and servers were polite and friendly but seemed rushed because the place was either understaffed or they were inexperienced or both.
When we've been there for lunch, both the food and the service were better than for dinner.
The food was good but the music was so loud we were almost yelling to hear each other. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable but also very talkative, which meant once he left our table, it was a long time until he came back. In addition, we were dining before a show and realizing how long things were taking and nearing the time we needed to leave, we had to tell the waiter that we needed to leave by a certain time, he was able to get dessert out quickly but we've been to other restaurants that are so close to show venues, where they asked right away if we had a show we were going to and what our time constraints were. They didn't here and we got there with plenty of time (2.5 hours) that a normal dinner should have been fine. It was Portland Dining Month so maybe that impacted things but the waiter should have been more attentive.
Wonderful meal - I had the Ali which was a good as I have ever had and my wife had pasta which also enjoyed. The service was excellent.
We were traveling to Portland and when we return on future trips, we will include Southpark Seafood in our plans.
I particularly love the oysters
a favorite of mine and always fresh and delicious
love sitting in the bar or outside when the weather permits
great and cordial service people
We came here for the first time as we were participating in Portland Dining month. We arrived 20 minutes early and the staff was able to seat us right as we walked in. The dining area was quiet and they played classic music like Nat King Cole, which created a great atmosphere. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and provided good recommendations for when we were indecisive. The gochujang brussel sprouts were the highlight of the meal. Those alone could bring me back to this restaurant.
It is very noisy. And the seafood is not bad but overly priced with the service and environment. A would highly recommend the dessert though.
Salmon portion was small and salty... not worth $40.00 or even $20.00
Wonderful experience; truly amazing meal; and Stephen was brilliant
NOM NOM NOM. Pigged out. Made a point to order the shrimp and grits ( that why I came ) and it was sooo good. Not to mention the rest of the meal. Could have had just a little more attention to the table but overall ok. Will go back. Option to sit at bar or restaurant is nice too.
Scrumptious! Food always outstanding at Southpark. Local, fresh and interesting flavor combinations. I enjoyed the Steelhead with parsnip purée and shaved Brussels Sprouts. All the flavors were spot on. My friends end enjoyed the fish tacos which were also spot on with a bit of spice but not overpowering.
Service great as always too. I definitely recommend this Restaurant.
Although everything we ordered was terrific, I can only give our experience at SouthPark 3 out of 5 stars due to the disappointing service. Downtown for dinner has a lot of competition and the bill didn’t particularly reflect a good value despite arriving for happy hour specials.
We stop at Southpark often. It was really slow Monday. I know that they had a new computer system but it was really slow service.
Excellent oyster bar, with 13 kind mostly from the West Coast.
Service relax and good. The guys in the oyster bar were very knowledgeable of their varieties.
Amazing food! Great service. Will be going back
Nothing horribly wrong, nothing really good about Southpark either. It was all just okay.
Our server, Hayley C. was outstanding. The menu prompted questions and she allowed those to be asked, answered them, and made recommendations. With the exception of the Chicken Liver Mousse, all the choices met or exceeded our expectations. The mousse was I'm sure perfect, just a bad choice for us.
We celebrated a birthday and Hayley was attentive to each need and request.
My husband and I have eaten dinner here several times and enjoyed it. We have returned for happy hour. The oysters are the best we have tried in Portland. Six of us returned for my husband's birthday. We told our server immediately that it was his birthday, and she offered a free dessert. As we were enjoying our bottles of wine and small plates, we began to discuss as a group how long the restaurant has been open. My husband did something that we all do today which is take out his phone to "google" the answer. The first item that popped up was a 20% coupon for birthdays. It just so happened that we were dining out on his ACTUAL birthday. When our meal was finishing up, I told the server that we would not be getting the free dessert because we were headed back to my house for cake, but I told her that we found the 20% off coupon for birthdays for the website. She immediately changed her optimistic, cheerful demeanor and disappointingly said that she would honor the coupon AFTER she saw my husband's driver's license, which was no problem. My assumption is that she felt as though we would not tip her 20% of the bill in its entirely - before the discount. I did tip her 20% off of the total bill, but the more I reflected upon her overall behavior, I determined it was unprofessional. We immediately told her that it was his birthday and she never mentioned the coupon. The bill was almost $400, and her tip was substantial. It was short-sighted of her to conceal the coupon. We may have ordered even more had we known up front that there was a coupon. She obviously knew about it because she did not act surprised when we told her. I do not know if this is an isolated incident or a policy, but I will hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone else.
Hadn't been to South Park for awhile; the menu has changed and is much more seafood focused. Still a great ambience, comfortable seating, and good service. The rockfish was excellent, a combination of unusual ingredients that all worked well together. Nice to know that the place is consistent with both food quality and service.
Our waitress (I wish I could remember her name) was fantastic! She was patient, thorough, and totally attentive to our needs. You need to give her a raise in salary!
Amazing! Can’t wait to go again. Great food. Great ambiance.
The food was exceptional, and a bit overpriced. Great waiter. Salmon was fresh, perfectly prepared and delicious.
We went for lunch before heading to PDX for our flight home. We enjoyed the playfulness of the menu items. The menu had familiar sounding things; clam chowder, brussel sprouts, beet salad - but the chef got pretty creative with the food, adding interesting textures and unexpected flavors. Service was friendly and fast. The place has a good atmosphere as well. I'd love to come back for the oysters!
Yummy! Will be back again and again! Never disappoints us..
Was visiting Portland last week and made a reservation at South Park Seafood. Had an excellent meal - 5 kinds of West Coast oysters followed by a delicious piece of Ahi Tuna prepared perfectly. Also, an interesting and approachable wine list. Great service, casual ambiance. Overall a great spot and the oyster selection is top notch!
Though it's not one of the Sexy New Kids on the restaurant block, South Park delivers in the way that a decent restaurant should, no matter the age: Solid, intentional menu executed cleanly; Service that's just attentive enough; And a recently-remodeled venue that seems to keep up with the Park Blocks trendy vibe, without screaming for "look at me" attention.
