Skates on the Bay

There celebrating my mother's 79th birthday. The only concern I had was even after making the reservation, and noting her age and she walked with a cane, they still sat us in the furthest corner of the restaurant. She had a long walk, which she was not pleased about, and neither was I. Otherwise, the food, beverages and ambiance were good. I would go back, but there would have to be more consideration.
Love the ambiance and view. I would go back for a drink and maybe appetizers, but not dinner. Four of us had four different meals, and none of us had good things to say about the food. Two meals were sent back and the clam chowder tasted like potato gravy. Been here before and enjoyed the food. Not sure what changed in the kitchen, or if just a terrible night. On a positive note, the service was outstanding (thank you Charles).
This was overall a very pleasant dining experience.
The service was exceptional. I drink a lot of water and my glass was never empty. I celebrated my birthday here and received a very special dessert. Our server gave us very good recommendations and we enjoyed our appetizers, dinner and desserts.
As always, the view of SF bay was spectacular and service was wonderful.
The view is outstanding - couldn't get better. The food was delicious, although a little pricey. The service was above and beyond, both during the dinner and afterwards.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was pleasurable!
My lemonfish was partially undercooked. When I reported this to the server, she notified the chef who came out. He gave a vague apology and very casually asked if there was anything they could do. I declined as this had all taken so long. Having conceded that the fish was undercooked, I would have expected a bit more urgency or show of pride/care. There was a $4 credit on overall bill. Given that the menu item was $26, this seems laughable. Either do it properly, or not at all. That just seems petty and takes no ownership for a kitchen 101 error.
Most things were great including the view, which our guest from Switzerland appreciated. It would be nice to have Onion soup added back to your menu.
Loved our server. Very sweet, friendly and accommodating to our every need. My food, the halibut was on point. Delicious, and flaky. Appetizers, flavorful. The view, was breath taking. Very pricey, but worth it for the full experience we had.
Skates remains one of the best brunch spots in Berkeley, with an unparalleled view of the Bay.
Their Benedict’s are amongst the best, including a vegetarian one with fried green tomatoes and a kale Florentine - a very creative take on the typical Florentine and very tasty.
We went with a group of 9 family and friends, and no one was disappointed. Very responsive and professional service, without being intrusive, and while not inexpensive, the value was worth it.
With ample free parking in Berkeley, what’s not to like?
I don’t think we will ever go back
I ordered the Louie Salad which was very good. A good size filet of grilled salmon, two large shrimp, crab, asparagus and hard boiled eggs! My husband had the open faced crab sandwich which was also good but had to eat with a knife and fork. View was excellent and our server was on it!
I can’t imagine a better dining experience in all of the Bay Area. Amazing!
Our father died recently and my sisters needed a happy lunch date. It was a good experience except for the bathroom stall being out of order in the women’s restroom and the large banquet room was being used for. Special event which created additional noise and people.
Our waiter was the man, the food was great, the view was unmatched!
My wife and I had dinner at Skates a couple of nights ago: amazing view, excellent service, tasty food well-prepared and well-presented. Not inexpensive, but reasonable for a meal of this caliber with such a fine location. So we went back tonight for an encore. View was the same . . . wonderful. Service was even better (way to go, Jonathan). Food was even better. Unusual and delicious halibut special. Bread pudding for dessert outstanding. This place is a winner. I noticed that there are lots of birthday parties and other celebrations here. I can see why. Will definitely come again, many times, I hope.
This is a great restaurant for groups of people who need room to spread out. Over the years we have dined with kids who need boosters, 1-3 wheelchair-users who need space, a grandma who brings her little emotional support dog, bigger kids who want crayons, family members who really need good stiff drinks to deal with other family members, coffee-drinkers in search of a latte, picky eaters who don't want spice, picky eaters who want more spice, omnivores looking for large portions, snackers who like bright vegetables alongside their deep-fried indulgences, loved ones who keep switching seats, and those of our party who are reliably 30 minutes late.
Really sweet and attentive staff, easy wheelchair access, lots of variety and good quality food for our different palates, and a view of the bay that includes parasurfers, sail boats, small yachts, and choppy waters.
For us it is a truism that you can have a good view or good food but Skates was a winner on both counts.
We can two salads, steamed clams and steamed mussels along with drinks. We we right at the windows with a great bay view.
All the staff was friendly from the hostess to the manager. Kamill H gave us great service.
We will be back.
I went here for my anniversary on a Tuesday night. The food was DELICIOUS. The service was great and attentive. It was a little pricey, but the ambiance was beautiful .
El mesero muy amable y atento. Ambiente callado. Comida 10/10 y atención rápida.
Always a pleasure to dine here! The food, views and service is excellent.
Outstanding in every way...from sashimi and sushi to Kung Po calamari to phenomenal wine to amazing lemon fish with caviar...a truly spectacular experience.
I requested a window table but unable to fulfill the request.
Well trained professional server and wait staff, excellent food and atmosphere
Very nice and clean restaurant. The waiter was awesome and the food was delicious. I left out a satisfied customer.
Enjoyed our birthday gathering Fay dear family friend.
Very cool staff. They were nice and friendly. I would go back and visit again.☺️
Great birthday celebration
The food was amazing! As was the service! I would highly recommend to anyone who loves food, particularly seafood.
Food good and beautiful location on the bay. Problem is our waiter was always looking to up-sell during dinner. Always recommending the most expensive item, asked us 3 times if we wanted appetizers. Even though my sister told him she had shell fish allergy, asked her 2x if she wanted to add clam chowder. Got tiring.
The location is worth the price. However, considering the price of the food, I would have expected some good cuisine. Instead quality of the food (just some asian fusion cuisine adjusted to western palate) was below average. It’s a shame cause the location is so nice that it would deserve some good food. Except for that, service was excellent and personnel was super kind and professional.
View is fabulous. Food is good to fabulous. pricey
Family get together
Great and beautiful restaurant! Service is great and the food is great.
We were given a great table _ corner for 6 - almost too large as with 'energetic conversations' it was still a challenge to hear each other. Wait servers were excellent - good job getting our orders and delivering ALL of our orders at the same time and hot! Multiple servers brought food all at once. Great technique!
Food was quite good - having the salmon burger and fries I would ask for a salad substitute next time just because it was all too filing.
I was particularly impressed that the hostess recognized the walkers, canes, etc and walked our group trough the bar to our table so that we could avoid all stairs! That was particularly courteous and thoughtful. Nice training or great insight by your hostess.
We had the perfect table for our family dinner. Lovely view at sunset. Our server was helpful and friendly , keeping a large group happy. The food was excellent, highly recommend it for a special dinner.
Must be paying for the view and not the quality of the food. My open face crab sandwich was almost impossible to cut with a knife. The salad that came with the combo was tasteless.
Poor service detracted from the meal, forgot one appetizer, slow to clear the table, food came out at different times for our entrees. All cocktails tasted watered down
