It was excellent overall!!
Was stunned by the limited menu
and shabby appearance relative to my visit last year. Im sure it Covid economics and they will be back with a great ambience soon. Definitely will go back
The service was terrible. We arrived on time and were seated reasonably promptly. But, we waited more than we should have for the waiter to come by and then we waited well over 30 minutes for them to bring the drinks order and evern longer to get the main course. We got some half-baked explanation for the delay but no offer of compensation - not even a free drink! Really poor. No class. And it's not cheap. We won't be going back.
Our waitress was excellent. However the restaurant was understaffed. It took too long to get a drink and too long to get our food. NEITHER was our waitress’s fault.
Halibut special was superb
A perfect day and perfect window table to enjoy it!
Great view, good drinks & outstanding service. The Grilled Salmon was delicious.
Crab and artichoke appetizer was delicious as was the calamari. The crab and shrimp linguine was outstanding. Of the seven of us it was considered the best entree. View is lovely.
What a gem, to be able to have that great view of the bay and watch the sun go down. Food was very good and the service first rate.
Great location - Hostess's are extremely accomodating and helpful! Our waitress was so nice - Chanita. The view is excellent, we had a lovely corner table. Our appetizer - the kung pao calamari - came out quick. Our salad came out another 20 mins later. But after 1 hour, still no entree. We mentioned to Chanita that we had to make a flight and she came back within 10 minutes with our order that we had 2 bites of and had to run. All in all a mixed experience. This is a large restaurant that is very popular, so hopefully this is not the normal service here.
It was a bit too crowded and in some areas like the middle it was barely 6’ apart
I would have preferred a table in not so direct sunlight at 5 pm. My hosts did not like the sushi and were refunded. I thought the food was good and appreciated the birthday dessert.
Everyone and everything was perfect! I loved our waitress and our food/drinks were perfect.
Out oft owners were blown away by the view. They also were impressed by the food and service.
Understandable limited menu. The available items were good. The restaurant is understaffed so long waits for orders. Our waiter had several tables and it seemed as if ours we’re not on his radar
We always love eating here! What a view! They are being very diligent with continued Covid-19 protocols. The food was delicious, service wonderful, and the hostess is very helpful.
Great views, good grilled salmon, nice wine selectio.
Really disappointed - expected so much more for the price
Lunch was good at Skates. It's a good idea to review the menu before going because the menu has been shortened ( condensed due to COVID). Some of your favorite dishes may no longer be available. The service was good and the dishes we ordered (calamari, sushi roll and the blue cheese, candied walnuts salad) were all great.
As always, Skates was great! Already looking forward to the next time.
My wife had the Nicoise, I had grilled salmon. Both were very good. I like the way the vegetables were prepared: cooked enough, but not too much. Highly recommend the key lime pie for dessert.
Love this restaurant I took my Husband for his birthday and the waiters were so nice and amazing. Will be back again!
Skates has really gone downhill. Rundown place. The view is the one plus. Food bland. Middle of our meal we had a new server - not a word from anyone about it - and service was poor.
Skates is in bad need of upgrading, she is showing her age. That being said, the food is still very good. Started with Crispy Calamari and a Prawn Cocktail, then the Seafood Bucatini and the Fish and Chips, finished with the Key Lime pie. All dishes were very good. The service is NOT back to pre-pandemic levels, but getting there.
It is so unfortunate that Skates on the Bay would not do anything to protect their patrons that eat at their restaurant in Berkeley. We stopped here for lunch on Friday, June 4, 2021 as we traveled through town. We came out to our car and our window had been smashed in. There was another person’s car that had his window broken too. We feel we were targeted because we both had out of state plates.
If this is such a high crime area why wouldn’t the restaurant provide security for their parking lot. If we had known how bad it really was, we would not have stopped here. This restaurant is in an isolated area with people just hanging out in their cars waiting for restaurant guests to go inside the restaurant( and yes, we saw them sitting there after we came out). If there had been security in the parking lot, this would take care of the problem. The police were called and they didn’t even come out because it happens so frequently.
Do not stop here to eat because you will most likely be targeted as well..
Me& my mom had lunch there to celebrate her having her replacement kidney surgery in April . We had great time ,we had not been there in a very long time. The food was delicious and the only thing is I ordered the salmon and my mom ordered the clam chowder with bacon and crab I wish I would’ve ordered what she got because I don’t like asparagus and that’s the only vegetables they had. But the service is great I love looking at the water we could see the bay bridge from there and Alcatraz!
Worst dining experience of my life!!!! We came out from lunch to find our car broken into and property stolen! Computer bags, back packs, luggage!!!! It was a $15k lunch!!! So not worth it. Use to be a favorite place years ago. But, times have changed and so has the element of the environment. DON'T GO WHILE TRAVELING!!!! I will never go back there again.
Met a friend for lunch. Good food, good service, superb views.
Open Table's reservation screen offers times before the restaurant actually opens. I was looking for a 1:00 lunch reservation, and the screen said there was nothing available for 2 hours. I tried again, and the screen said "technical difficulties." Much later, I noticed that the restaurant doesn't even open until 3 PM. So the reservation system is very confusing.
Also, the reservation telephone number rang, but wasn't answered, and the recording said voicemail box is full. So I went to a different restaurant instead.
When we actually went to Skates, we had a wonderful meal and dining experience.
There's not a bad seat in the house.. Great vista throughout. Nice menu. Their bar menu is especially entertaining. Reservations are a must.
Prompt, courteous, friendly service from the wait staff and hostess, enjoyable food (crab artichoke dil was excellent) with a great view. Tables spaced well apart for covid safety.
The location was across the bay on the water which was very nice. The Calamari appetizer was yummy.
The restaurant was very good. The service a little slow due to staffing. But very good service. Waitresses were very bubbly and accommodating. Will definitely go back. Great place for a date or just a night out celebrating with friends.
Nice food, good service, quiet, affordable. Reservations was fast and easy
Food was not tasty. It was salty and overtly oily. And all ready sauce used. Not at all classy or flavorful. It was pricey.
My friend and I had a great time , food were excellent, service were super ! I am so happy you have re-opened for in-door dining !
Great setting to enjoy a great meal and sunset even when it was cloudy and windy outside...host was especially helpful in finding a table for our desired sitting
We booked a table for two for our anniversary and noted this on our reservation. The food was OK - especially the focaccia bread. Main dish portions were heavy on the sides and light on the proteins: my wife had the ahi and I had the yellowfin tuna. On both plates we probably had 6 slices the size of a 50 cent coin. Desserts were okay but in past occasions the wait staff brought out something to celebrate our anniversary. I did see desserts being brought out for birthdays so perhaps this was just a service error. Whatever. This place has seen better days.
