The mahi mahi special was excellent, as was the sesame steak tidbits appetizer. Roast chicken was great but accompanying rice was tasteless and not even very warm -- very strange, as rice is so simple to make well.
On the Sunday night of a holiday weekend, the restaurant was so loud that it was difficult for older folks at our table to hear me or others talk. And the vaunted view, while nice, is a bit far away to make a strong impression, at least at night.
The Hostess service was horrible, despite having a brunch reservation for our anniversary and having 10 + window tables available. We were not given window table.
I am sure , it was in my open table reservation . While we finished our food, there were still 8 tables available.
We were happy with the prompt service by our server . No complaint about the food our bar service.
I don’t think I will visit this restaurant again or recommend any one .
Absolutely loved the food, location, service, and ambiance. Im very picky too.
Excellent services and beautiful location. great food. Could not get enough of the bread
Everything was wonderful except for our server. He was forgetful and did not come around often enough.
The best sunset view in the east bay, as far as dining.
Excellent atmosphere, food was amazing. And the view was amazing.
Husband and I decided on an early after Valentine's day dinner at Skates. We eaten at Skates in the past and always ask for a table near a window to enjoy the ambiance. Our server was ok. She got our orders wrong, but made up for it in the end. The food was ok. We ordered Surf and turn Shortribs, but ended up with the shortribs only. My husband was ok with his (althought the plate was cold and the gravy congealed and the shortribs were totally dry and overcooked), it looked like the plate had sat for a while before being brought out to us. Our server was defensive at first, but offered to make things right and I accepted her offer. My husband chose not to. She comped coffee and dessert and offered apologies and maybe it was the old fashion cocktail (excellent) but I thought it was sincere. Besides being a server and trying to please everyone's whims is a hard, demanding job.
Didn’t get served our drinks until 45 minutes after we ordered them. We ordered two simple drinks and oysters. The oysters took an hour to come out.
First time visiting the Berkeley Marina and found Skates on the Bay. Nice view of the bay, excellent food, service; ambiance was a little bit noisy but the music on speaker made it pleasant.
It was very good but did not compare to the first time we were there
Horrible experience. Server disappointed multiple times. Left without notifying us. Constantly pressured you to order, then had to flag down another waiter for refills. Lobster was tough, potatoes over cooked, and plate came out missing asparagus. Food was bland. For the price, it’s extremely bland. It lacks flavor and expertise. For a 50 dollar plate of lobster, I would expect for it to be cooked right.
Chairs were hard and narrow. Temperature cold and uncomfortable. Place is need of a remodel.
Horrible place to dine. Won’t be back.
I will not be returning to Skates. The best memory I have of my Valentines Day Dinner was definately not the Short Ribs that has had me SICK for 2 days now. My night out was totally screwed up,so sorry for my girlfriend her night was cut short because I wasnt feeling well at the concert we attended after Dinner. If I could I would give them zero stars. I cant blame our server Mike. He was Great. He should be the manager ,he has great customer service skills, very attentive, patient, and very thorough. This youngman really knows his job. I had to modify this review because,I wouldnt want anyone to feel like I have felt these last couple days.
My wife and I enjoyed Valentine’s Day at Skates by the Bay. Good food service and a beautiful view. We do recommend.
We had a beautiful day to enjoy the view. Service was okay, we had to wait awhile to get drink service. I had fish and chips which was good. My two companions had the crab sandwich and they enjoyed that. Its a bit of a drive for us but I am sure we will be back.
Food was excellent - as expected. The service was awful. We seemed to be at a table that the wait-staff serving the area assumed somebody else was serving. This lead to very lengthy delays getting any service. The server who helped the other tables around us didn't even offer to help find our server or get us any service - any eye contact was ignored. In the end we managed to waive down the floor manager who provided tremendous service while he was available to do so.
When you see other tables around you seated after you, get their order in, are feed, after-dinner coffees, pay their bill and leave while you are still battling to try and get the attention of your server it ruins everything.
All in all an excellent meal ruined by the poor service. Note the quality of the service when we received it was excellent, however actually getting any service was a battle.
A favorite place of ours. Good food and killer view.
Hostess didn’t honor Reservation.
Had to wait to even get Menus.
Server forgot to bring one (of the two drinks).
Server forgot to bring the bread.
Sales Pitch for a Club Card.
A delightful, light filled view of the Bay with a seasonal menu of fresh seafood offerings at a fair price.
Haven’t eaten here in years so was really surprised that the food and service are top notch still. Great views!
It was my birthday. Paolo was great!
The service was amazing! The food excellent :)
The Lobster Bisque was divine. Service was attentive and happy.
We had to wait a long time for our table even though we had made a reservation (waited an addition 40+ minutes) we finally decided to just eat at the bar while we say another group who came in after us seated at a table that would have been appropriate for our group. The hostess gave us an explanation that did not make sense.
We have lunch at Skates a couple times a year. I always call a week before for reservation. I ask for a window table for 2 but it has never been available. ?? Also, the greeter always try’s to seat us in the bar. ?? We are Seniors. Age discrimination? Maybe we are not the image you want?
The food was very ordinary and too creamy. We ordered the crab roll. The roll was soft and the crab mixed with whatever was invisible to the taste buds. The service was fair. The person who greeted us was a bit rude; left us standing while she arranged for others to be seated. I don''t know what you have to do to be seated at the center window (there were tables for two and I'd reserved considerably in advance), but we were once again seated at a side table at the bar room. ok , but not terrific.
The person who served us brought us the wine we ordered; didn't bring water til we asked.
The key lime pie was not at all tart.
Altogether a mediocre experience
Celebrating daughter’s new job
Visit Skate's for lunch often and always consistently enjoyable.
Food was ok. Ambiance great.
Birthday celebration. The ambiance was very nice and dining was a good experience for everyone.
First of all the
Our generation of first cousins usually meet for lunch at Skates on the Bay around Christmas; we have done so for years. There are eight of us. This year, we pushed the date to Ground Hogs Day due to conflicting schedules and to avoid Yuletide hustle and bustle. Once again, great food, outstanding setting and wait staff that can’t be beat. We never felt hurried or rushed (we were there almost 3 hours!). The menu selection was varied; there was something for everyone, we all selected a different dish. We all remarked at how perfect our waitress was (Jasmine?), efficient, friendly, professional and personable. Someone who we would have loved to have join us. We ended the day sharing delicious desserts. Can’t wait for next year.
The service was good. The environment was a very nice touch. I just didnt like the food and for the prices they offer i just expected a little more in the flavor department. But I will definitely try skates again in a month or two to see if it was just a off night for the cook.
Food, service, location, drinks, everything was great
We were told on arrival that our reservations were cancelled due to a power outage. The bar still happens to be opened do we decided to take a chance and wait. Soon after the power was restored and about 5 minutes later we were seated.
Excellent table with amazing views.
All meals were excellent. The service was a little slow but there was no hurry on our part. Highly recommended.
My friend has cancer, and I took her to Skates to give her a special outing. We could not have been more satisfied...with the view, the wonderful food, our very kind and attentive waiter. We had a memorable experience there, for which we are very grateful.
Service was stellar. Everything arrived as ordered, requests were met promptly. Plates were cleared, water glasses filled. Food was, overall, good. The kung pao calamari was stellar. A huge portion, a few more vegetables and it would be an entree. The root beer braised pork belly was very good, although the pork belly could have been braised a bit longer. The accompanying grits were terrific, cheesy and creamy. The petite seafood louis was the least of the dishes. Not really what I consider a salad, instead small portions of crab (and a single prawn) atop a few butter lettuce leaves.
The views were truly spectacular. My dining companion must have taken 20 photos just of the Marin Headlands.
Don't expect an extensive menu, but good food, well prepared.
Oh, if you plan on having a mojito, bring a straw with you. I'm still picking muddled mint out of my teeth.
They sat us next to a big table which was loud. It seemed to quiet down after everyone got their food but it was still hard to hear my friend who was next to me. Leonardo was very a tentative and super friendly. The food was really good as well
Great meal and views.
I went for the restaurant week price fix menu. The Aji tuna appetizer was good. Sushi roll is dating appetizer was not good, only 4 tiny pieces essentially have a sushi roll. The prime rib portions were large but the prime rib was tough. Dessert was good. We had a reservation they wouldn’t give us a table by the window, so we had to sit in the bar area, but we did manage to find a table by the window But was noisy.
