We had a 6:15 pm dinner reservation and were there on time.
Finally a waitress came and took our order.
We ordered one meal of cream of chicken soup and a sirloin steak.
Also a meal of a Caesar salad and salmon.
We were served the salad and soup.
Soup was hot but full of vegetables and small bits of chicken.
We waited and waited and waited.
When we had been there an hour and no dinner we said we would pay for soup and salad and leave.
We asked to see the manager but were told she said she was too busy to come talk to us.
Is Shadwell’s a no customer service eatery?
The waitress at first refused to call the manager.
We will think twice before going there again!!
Great food, great service and an amazing experience as always!
I was disappointed in my last visit. Waiter hurried us out the door. Food was just OK. Visit before ordered filet mignon and was served chuck roast.
Service was very good - all that could be expected. The concrete floors detracted from the ambiance.
We were a table of 3 placed in a side room which included 2 large parties. The noise was deafening such that we were unable to hear each other. Also waitress was unorganized and short in her responses. This was my friend’s first visit here and I had raved about it. I was embarrassed. The food as usual was awesome though!
Service was slow. My friend and I were basically ignored when we got there. We had to tell the hostess we had been sitting there for 30 minutes and no one asked us if we wanted anything to drink. The overall service for food was slow, but it was very busy being a Holiday.
We didn't have a waitress and they found someone else to serve us. He was very nice and did a good job.
It was very loud in there.
Not sure if I would come back.
We have eaten at Shadwells many times and always enjoy the experience. Thank you especially to our server who made an extra effort to get whipped cream for our Irish coffee. I would recommend this place to any & everyone.
Using the open table app made reservations a snap. Stairwells is our favorite place in Charlotesville for crab cakes! Everyone was pleased with their choice!
Visited on Christmas Eve and was pleasantly surprised by the menu options and quality of food. The wait and host staff were especially great.
The owners are fully engaged in all levels of the experience. They spent quite a bit of time chatting with us and remembered us from previous visits.
Food and service were excellent!
Shadwell's is an excellent family restaurant. The food is tasty - the She-crab soup was a little salty (but we use very little salt in our foods) and the salmon had a delicious topping. I had never tried ginger cake and was pleasantly surprised. The staff was friendly and helpful. They stopped by the table a few times to make sure we were enjoying our meal and ask if anything was needed. We have been there twice and will definitely return.
We all had the Filet Mignon. It was cooked to perfection and very tender. Delicious! The asparagus was wonderful as well as the baked potato. The dinner salad was hugh and nice and fresh. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends and neighbors. The service was excellent. Very friendly.
I wish I knew the name of our waitress, she was wonderful. Knowledgeable and appropriately attentive. The portions were large and we took leftovers home to enjoy the next day. Food was good, not great, but good. The atmosphere was too bright for a late evening dinner, and it made it feel like a diner. With the nice big booths and roomy space, turning down the lights a bit would make the space more cozy. Despite the thin crowd, we were seated near the kitchen entrance, and I’m not sure why. We didn’t say anything, maybe we should have, but I don’t think people should be seated there first, and have to ask to be moved. Overall it was a good experience, not great, but good. Not the first place I would bring out of town guests, but convenient for a decent dinner wth good service when on that side of town.
We go to Shadwells frequently because the food is always good and we have never had a bad experience there.
Strange venue. Huge high ceilings. Not very cosy. Apparently used to be a steak house. Linen table clothes. Wine by glass reasonable and ok. Salmon nicely done and ample portion. Asparagus al dente. Fried oysters husband said "were surprisingly good". Light batter, not overpowering. Side of spinach substitute for French fries good but not garlicky. She crab soup creamy and good. Big spoonful of crab garnished it.
Overall a very nice place to dine. Service was excellent and food was very good!
Tuesday night and we sat at the bar. Few others. Bartender was very friendly, recommended a local dark beer, which was excellent. Food was good but not worth
I picked this restaurant because it was close to I-64 & I was meeting my granddaughter who was coming from I-81 & I was coming from I-95 (the other side) but I also picked it because of its menu -- we love seafood (especially she-crab soup) so we tried it & we were not disappointed. Our lunch date was early per my granddaughter's request so we got there right after they opened - more came in after we were seated but it was the day after Thanksgiving. The food was excellent as was the service. the only reason I gave the food 4 stars was because my children don't order anything unusual and I had the she-crap soup & a salad, my grandson had fish & chips & they were great, my granddaughter had the crapcake sandwich & my great-granddaughter had chicken tenders - she is only 2 & it was supposed to be off the kids meals, but it was huge! My granddaughter took most of it home.
Worst meal in a long time. Service ok. Dark, low light. Could barely see. Will never go back!
I went for Thanksgiving dinner and was disappointed. The food was fine, not spectacular, but okay, and there was plenty. Still for the price, it was not worth it.
Thanksgiving dinner was well prepared and plentiful. The sweet potatoes especially were excellent. I felt the price was excessive, but people wanting to skip the whole meal preparation probably saw it as the price you pay for convenience, as I did. I was disappointed with the atmosphere. A candle on the table would have gone a long way. Remember, people are dining out on Thanksgiving in place of a meal at home, for a various reasons, and a little effort in the way of making it homey would have been appreciated.
I took my mother here for their Thanksgiving service. Usually, for Charlottesville, this is a good restaurant, but I was disappointed. I had reserved on Opentable far in advance, but was given a bad table (they first sat us at a table in the bar area, which we refused. We were moved to the dining room, but they then refused us a booth despite the fact that booths were open). I’m picky and normally would have left, but in the spirit of the holiday and limited options, we continued.
The meal was not worth the $32 per person price. The only premium item was the oyster appetizer, which was nice. Other than that, it was a slice of pie, a single serving of turkey and enough low cost carbs to feed an army. Mom and I finished the turkey and took the carbs to go, but they ended up in the trash.
Went there for Thanksgiving and it was excellent. Staff was fantastic too!
Thankgiving dinner was great! I even had leftovers.
Three of us had a very good dinner on a busy Sunday night. The food was served hot and was delicious. We had the fried shrimp, braised short ribs and the pecan chicken. The server was attentive and the portions were generous. This was our second visit and the second good meal. Good American fare at a fair price. Only negative is that the inside looks tired and is in need of a redo. Don't let that stop you from eating at Shadwell's, however. The food was worth it.
a good neighborhood restaurant -- always can count on good food and good service
Family gathering of 4 adults and 2 teenagers.
Was suitable for all.
Food was very good. Our server was excellent.
I used to love shadwekk's and it was lovely to have a good place so close but it has slowly been declining. Usually the Oysterfest is a favorite and we go two or three times. LAst Tuesday was one time too many. Small oyster and not cut from the shell. They were in a bed of rock salt and when you tried to get the baked oysters out of the shell all of the topping fell into the salt. I have had better oysters Rockefeller at Sanm's club. And the fried ones were crammed ito a small dish and when yyou took one out the coating remained in the dish. I am not supposed to eat potatoes and when I asked for something else i was told NO SUBSTITUTIONS> I was willing to pay for asparagus but did not get the chance.. to offer. All in all it was terrible which I have come to expect from the inferior meat but not the seafood. I hate to say this but I am through. I do not want to take the next three sets of out of town guests to a place that has been good on previous visits but it very poor now. Usually Oysterfest draws a crowd but only four tables in the dining room.
Food was very good. Wine list nice. Service was not to par with expectation for this price range of a restaurant. Need to work with wait staff on how to be service oriented and prompt with all parts of dining experience.
Scallops were awesome app as well as the crab soup.
Slow food service. Waitress did the best she could. Kitchen slow
we had a 7oclock reservation, and we arrived 15 minutes early. We were asked if we minded waiting they were realy busy, we said no. Then two minutes later they sat us in the bar, which was fine, however we sat and sat and no one greated us and said we will be with your shortly nothing, about 10-15 minutes when by and finally i flag down the manager and said " we do not mind sitting in here but we do mind not be greated or waited on. He said he was sorry they were busy and he would get someone right over. He did. We ordered Ribeyes which was recommend, they cam eout about 25 to 30 minutes later and were burned and not hot. We both ordered medium. It was now almost 8pm and we did not want to wait for more food so we tried to eat them. THe parts that were not burned were ok both nothing to write home about. Lets just say there were the worst $26 steaks we ever had. We will not be going back.
About what you would expect from a Sizzlers for twice the price.
Rude hostess, fruit fly in my drink, noisy poorly lit interior, generally pleasant staff (hostess excepted) but not particularly attentive. My family ordered 3 steaks all medium rare, one came medium rare and was about what you would expect for a $25 steak which comes with two sides, one was over cooked with an unpleasant flavor, and the last steak was well done on one end and raw on the other.
I hope to never eat at Shadwells again.
We went to this restaurant based on the OpenTable reviews. The food was okay, but nothing special. The largest issue we had was the service. We waited close to an hour to receive our food, and we were very seldom checked on by the wait staff. There are too many other restaurants in the area for this price point, so we will go elsewhere next time we are in town.
Food was pretty decent but very slow, non-attentive service.
Olivia was an excellent server and the food was amazing.
We went there for dinner with our college student. Realized we had passed it many times. Nice restaurant, good food, good service, we will definitely return.
The atmosphere is lacking and it was noisy, but overall the food was good when comparing to other area restaurants. The ribeye was good as was the clam chowder and key lime pie. I would go back again.
waitress forgot to put in one appetizer and one drink. once we got our food we seemed to have fallen off her radar. nothing so special as to warrant a trip to this place
The food and ambience was great! The poor server had computer issues from the power going out multiple times but she made up for it the best she could and was very sweet and kind. We’ll be back soon!!
