Shadwells Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant was empty, yet we were seated next to the only other occupied table by the kitchen. I ordered the rockfish which was undercooked over runny rissoto which was supposed to have crab meat, but the taste was onions and carrots. The rolls were good. The fish and chips which my husband ate were fine. Although it was a bright sunny day, the room we were in was very dark and oppressive. Live in the city, but probably won't go back.
Food was outstanding, portion size was more than adequate. The service was excellent even though they were extremely busy. This was our first visit and we will definitely go back. The fish and chips were the best we've had in the area and the rockfish was perfectly prepared on a bed of crab grits. Overall a great experience and we will return.
We were ale to squeeze a reservation in for Valentine's Day and our waitress was very nice. Of course like all things, their computer broke down late in the evening and they had to come manually confirm the order, but they were very good about the follow up.
We've been there numerous time and enjoy going back. They need to put the Thomas Jefferson biscuits back n the menu!
Our table wasn’t ready at our reserved time. I don’t know if those who were waiting but seated before us also had reservations. There was a backup because it was Valentines Day. The server thought to bring us bread because the food was delayed. His service was excellent throughout. Overall, I wouldn’t be bothered but my steak was overdone.
Went here for Valentine's dinner. I got the ribeye and my wife got the filet and crabcake. We both got asparagus and fingerling potatoes. My steak had a good taste, but beef was a bit tough, which is odd for a ribeye. My wife loved her crabcake but left most of it, too tough. Veggies uneventful. Oh, I also got the French onion soup, which was tasty! No bread on the table but I noticed that others had some. Maybe an oversight?
The restaurant is nice and the service was average. Our steaks were cooked opposite and asparagus & potatoes didn't quite seem like they were cooked enough but still okay. Good beer selection on tap though! Nice bar scene. Overall, maybe a 3/5 experience. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to go there again.
We have dined at Shadwells many times and it's become our favorite restaurant
For that reason we made reservations for Valentine's.
We were seated fairly promptly but got a waiter we had not seen before and the service was absolutely terrible. Fresh rolls are usually delivered immediately upon taking the drink order but we had to ask for them 3 times. They finally arrived after we had started in the entree.
The she crab soup was delicious as usual.
I had asked for coffee and water to be delivered with the entree. Another waiter delivered the entrees and asked if there was anything we needed and I said water and coffee. I did not see either waiter for about 10 minutes. I had almost eaten my entire entree with nothing to drink before our waiter showed up and he asked how everything was . We told him we had never gotten bread and I had never received anything to drink.
A few minutes later he arrived with the rolls, water and coffee but no cream. I requested cream and he said there was none. I wondered I he really could be telling the truth as it was only 6 o'clock in the evening. He said he would go look again as I said coffee without cream was not acceptable. A few minutes later he returned with half and half in a little plastic container (The same container our butter was in with the rolls) all other tables had coffee creamer in silver creamers ! (At that point I did not have any patience to tell him that half and half IS coffee creamer. I just let it go.
As to the food, my husband ordered short ribs. He said they were nearly all fat. He had just had this during Restaurnat week and loved them!
I got fillet and lobster and the fillet was delicious but I thought the lobster was a bit tough.
The waiter ruined a lovely celebration for us. We will give Shadwells another chance but I hope they have given this waiter his walking papers.
We are two senior retired professionals who have dined at shadwell s many times in the past. valentine day is always a special occasion for us .we had made reservations nearly two weeks in advance. We arrived 15 min earlyTravis the manager warmly greeted us .I immediately noticed at least two booths vacant in the back first aisle i asked the hostess to have a booth , for two reason , intimacy and more important comfort since I’ve had a hip operation . Two couples app 5 min and 10 min later arrived for the same time 5 pm
we were all asked if we could wait until 5 pm . When the time came the hostess brought us to a table when again I asked about the booth she just walked away .the party that was the latest arriving got the booth on the left .several min utes later a another couple were seated in the right booth app 505 pm .my lady didn’t want to make a big deal or did I . Ihad to use the rest room. When I came back two other couples were seated next and behind us it was now approaching 515 pm we sat there for at least another 5 min or so during all this time not one waiter approached us we left at app 522pm to say we were humiliated but more important embarassed

I had requested a very special table because this was a birthday celebration. I did not feel like we were given that consideration. We were placed in the very middle of the floor, next to the entrance. Clearly, there were better tables (empty).
The food was OK - not great - and service was nothing spectacular.
Overall, just OK for the price.
Visiting Charlottesville for weekend - happened to be towards end of restaurant week and this was one of very few restaurants with a table. Calamari appetizer was cold. Of three steaks, 1 medium sent back as it was very rare. 2 others were almost raw in places. Servers disinterested. Would not recommend and definitely never return.
Shadwell's is our regular spot for dining out. The service is prompt and courteous; the menu provides choices even for picky eaters. The food is not adventurous, but it is well made and presented. When the restaurant is full, it is hard to hear your companion. Full bar with good selection of local beers and inexpensive wines. Have the crab cakes or the salmon!
My husband and I went to Shadwells for restaurant week. We were extremely impressed by the prompt and courteous service. Furthermore, the food was absolutely fabulous. The appetizers were delicious; the entrées were well proportioned and very tasty. The dessert was equally enjoyable. I would highly recommend Shadwell’s for almost any occasion pier
Wonderful dining experience. The steak was cooked perfectly and melted in the mouth. The fudge brownie sundae was a great ending - it was so light and delicious. Our server was friendly and timed all courses fantastic. Absolutely great meal. We’ll be back again.
7 of my friends went to the restaurant to celebrate a birthday. There was a pretty good selection on the menu to choose from. The service was very good. The food was very good. The portions very generous. The pecan crusted chicken was really good, the steak was cooked perfect and the oysters seemed to be a big hit at our table. One of us ordered the undercover cosmo. It was terrible . Tasted like a watered down drink with something missing. The waitress was very kind to bring drink back and exchange for something different. The Blood Orange cosmo which was really good Not a big selection of wine. The ambiance was kind of drab. I think if you were just going out to eat this would be fine, but it would have been a little nicer to be in a place that was not so casual and plain for a birthday celebration.
Good family friendly restaurant. Large space, with booths for six and tables for four. Privet rooms for large groups. Service is great, very informed and attentive.
Food is generally good, with seasonal, local specials. Crabcakes, steaks, shrimp, pasta, oysters and very good bread. If you stick to basics all will be fine.
They have a very good bar, with a good selection of wines, beers & spirits. If you're in a hurry be sure to let them know, it can be hard to get your bill settled if your running late. Good if you can't get into your first choice at the last minute, or not dressed and hungry.
We decided to eat an early dinner traveling home from Christmas with Family, and found Shadwells.
While billed as a seafood restaurant, there were just as many chicken, beef and pork items. Menu was quite varied anywhere from light fare to a nice hearty dinner. The food was very good, albiet a bit pricey. Dinner for 2 with a soup and 2 teas was $75. Mr. had a steak with broccoli as his side, and I had crab cakes with mashed potatoes. Both dinners came with a salad included. Mr. had a garden and I the Caesar. The crab cakes had zero filler, literally zero filler. So, they fell apart, which is just fine with me. They were really good. We were not offered dessert but we were full anyway.
The restaurant was so cold that we never took our coats off. That was my biggest complaint. Mr sometimes ran out of hot tea and it took a few minutes to get the waiter. The restaurant was no where near full at 5:30 so we don't think it was that.
All in all it was a good meal. I would eat there again.
We made 7:30 reservations on Christmas Eve. On our arrival the host station was empty we waited 10 minutes for the host to arrive. He told us there would be a 35 minute wait. That is on top of our already 10 minute wait. I reminded him of our reservations, he responded with a sneer saying they had over 300 reservations. Incredulous I asked, so you overbooked? He responded with an eye roll, looks that way and left the station. Every time he returned he would glare at me or roll his eyes. Dressed in a striped tshirt he was very unprofessional. We found neighbors who had already been there 35 minutes for their 7:15 reservation. They were seated about 5-10 minutes later. At 8 another party inquired about their 7:30 reservations and were rudely informed they were waiting for a table. We got out our phones, found another restaurant, left and had a lovely dinner.
Arrived on time for reservation and was told there was a 20 minute wait. Waited for 20 minutes and then walked out. On the way out met a couple who had been waiting 45 minutes past their reservation time. It seems like the restaurant does not adhere to reservations. Also, the host was rude, never smiled, dressed unprofessionally, and definitely did not make a good first impression.
Staff was very friendly, but clearly overwhelmed with the Christmas Eve dinner crowd. Even though we had a reservation, we were told there would be a 20 minute wait beyond our reservation time. Once we were seated and our order taken, it was another 20+ minutes just to get salad and drinks. Food was okay, but nothing special. The place was more casual and a lot noisier than We were expectIng. Staff was very apologetic for the wait, but I don’t know that we’ll go back-maybe we’ll try them on a slow weekday for lunch
