Had a great time at scratch for company dinner for Bay Area Computer Solutions. Food presentation was EXCELLENT!
Food is quite good if you order carefully but the noise level makes it impossible to talk to the persons at your table without shouting and raising the noise level. Wine by the glass is too limited and high priced. Seems to be very popular with the young computer crowd.
Downtown Mountain View needed a restaurant like Scratch. It's a great place to have a business lunch, meet friends for happy hour or dinner with the family. Their menu selection is great and the food is awesome.
Had a group of 7 on a busy Friday night but had good service and enjoyed the lively ambience. Fried chicken was awesome as as the butterscotch pudding - but we shared about everything on the menu and it was all good!
Every single item from appetizer, salad, main course, and dessert was absolutely horrible in taste. Presentation is okay and the descriptions sounded delightful on paper. HUGE dissapointment. We really wanted to enjoy this place
Really loved the food and the service was excellent as well, and the wine list was great as well.
Went there 9:30 on a Tuesday and had great service. They even fired up the kitchen again to accommodate our desert order.
Scratch honored our wishes of a quiet table by seating us in the far corner of the restaurant--the baby slept in his car seat. The music was pleasant & we did not have to talk over it to be heard.
Our waiter was extremely attentive & the food was outstanding! We shared the cheese plate and crab cakes appetizers. Two vegetarians enjoyed the risotto and the salmon. The tuna tartare, the surf and turf (lobster and filet), the scallops, and the halibut were all fabulous.
We brought our own wine & paid the corkage fee. We all passed on dessert. They sounded yummy but we were way too full! We will definitely go back. The decor is lovely. Extremely pleasant and attentive staff. Thank you Scratch for a memorable evening.
This restaurant serves portions in the sizes they should be. However, after being used to XL portions everywhere, It was some what shocking when the food arrived. I can't say that I would rush back. But everyone should try it once.
Loved the food! Excellent butternut squash soup! Crab cakes were divine! Everyone in our group had a great meal. Will come back! Ice cream was to die for...
Scratch boasts about making everything from the basics to the finished product at their cook’s station, and everything we had was very fresh, well flavored and nicely presented. I had a wonderful piece of halibut and my husband enjoyed the short ribs.
Guests were varied in age, w/young group keeping the noise level up at the bar, which cooled down after 7:30.
Scratch is a great addition to the Castro Street restaurants, adding a touch of class and excellent food.
Very pricey, especially the wine. The food was only average and one of the dishes was well below average. I would classify this as more like a bar than a fine dining place. The noise level was much too loud to carry on any conversation at the table. The staff was very friendly.
Scratch never disappoints. The staff are attentive but not obsequious and the food is delightful. The fried chicken is my personal favorite.
Food was very good. They ran out of the soup special quickly. Pacing was too slow. They were very quick to clean up a water glass we broke on the table.
The ambience was a bit loud, but the service and food was excellent!!! Would recommend and frequent again.
Met some girlfriends there before a concert. The waiter was very kind in accommodating our needs.
We hadn't been to scratch since its soft opening night, so we were curious what had become of it. We weren't disappointed in the least (well, except for having to pay for our meal this time!). The rib eye and pork chops were delicious. The soup du jour, clam chowder, was, um, interesting. I don't have a sufficiently skilled palate to be able to say what made it different from all other clam chowders I'd tasted, but the addition of a garnish of what looked like sprouts was one thing. Anyway, the whole meal was yummy, so don't hesitate to try it yourself.
Never book a group larger than 5 as the add 20% gratuity so the wait staff don't have to work for a tip. The management needs to either change the policy or the wait staff or both. If you are on a time limit for your meal, don't go to Scratch.
I come here time and time again because I love the oysters and food! Not many good restaurants on the peninsula but this is defiantly one not to miss!
The food was great -- flavors in everything. But it shows up out of order (salads arrived before the appetizers) and they seem to want to clear the plates almost as soon as they arrive. I had to tell them I was still working on the salad, then the appetizer, and then the main course. Food is just dropped at the table with absolutely terrible serving skills. PLUS THIS PLACE IS RIDICULOUSLY LOUD!! Don't expect to have a conversation unless you are willing to shout toward your dining companions. Would I go again? Probably not -- great tastes but the ambiance and service make me question spending over $30 for the entree alone.
Every thing was perfect. Great managment great food and awesome ambiance.
The menu has a nice selection that can meet the needs of a diverse group. The wait staff is very friendly and observant. I met a friend I hadn't seen for a while for lunch and while the staff was attentive they were also discrete and respectful of our reunion.
Scratch is our "go to" for larger group dinners - they really know how to take care of larger groups. Their prices are very moderate and the service is topnotch. Thank you Scratch!
While my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner on Saturday night, there was a glitch with the service. We were still eating our appetizer when a server (not our waitperson) brought our entrees. This was barely fifteen minutes into the meal. We asked them to hold the plates for about ten minutes and they did so. After that, the service was excellent and the evening was delighful.
So this is my favorite restaurant in Mountainview. My boyfriend and I always love the opportunity to go and bring friend s to this delicious restaurant. I have even had a good meal, they have always been great. Last night I was savoring a fish soup, followed by ahi tuna on mouth watering spinach and mushrooms, next to pineapple rice. Delicious! We shared a brownie Sunday that had heavenly Carmel sauce. Can't wait to go again.
We dined at Scratch on a Friday evening before a performance at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts. It's an understatement to call the bar scence vibrant - it's packed and it's noisy. The restaurant almost seems like an after thought, a bunch of booths situated behind the bar. The food is best characterized as modern California comfort food cuisine. The portions are enormous, so you have to be careful with your selections. The caesar salad, crab cake, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken (with corn pudding) and the brownie sundae were all fantastic. Service was a bit confused - there wasn't much coordination between the waiter and the servers. Wine list is all American. Don't go if you want to carry on a decent conversation.
Waiter didn't even bother until we had to get up and get him several times.
We ate at Scratch again, and loved it! A little noisy, but generally, the four of us had a good time. We all had the Chef's Fish Special which was tasty and perfectly cooked. Highly recommend this place for business, or pleasure. We noticed the bar scene was very animated.
Early evening, not too busy. Service was excellent. Roasted Green Chile Chicken Flatbread great of an appetizer. Entrees: the short ribs, ribeye and lamb chops. We shared. Short ribs were great, roasted tomato polenta, mushrooms, artichokes was killer. Lamb chops were good, another chop would have been appropriate, they were very small, the succotash was suprisingly good, even for the lima bean hater at the table. The rib eye was disappointing, overly salty & seasoned, quite thin, the bottom on our list of the three we tried, but the arugula with fingerling potatoes and egg was nice. Over all everyone enjoyed the experience...not a must go to place for us. Don't get the French 75 cocktail...unless you like bitter lemon straight up, yuck.
Scratch is very hip and trendy - the ambiance is gorgeous and food is always tasty.
My daughter ordered the "simple" fish for $29. The halibut was the size of a deck of cards and about as half as thick. There was not much else to eat on the plate. My fried chicken had a nice coating but was very bland and flavorless. Our waitress indicated that they often sold out of this dish but I am mystified as to why. My husband's short ribs was a hit. Overall service was very good but value was not there.
Fine rendition of American food and ingredients. They don't even have foreign liquors in the bar. Fresh raw bar. Interesting twists on some traditonal dishes. Small but well thought out wine list.
We don't come here often enough. The food is excellent. I had lobster and clams in a"clambake"with a beautiful presentation. A great dry trialling complimented it. My wife often has an appetizer for her neap and we frequent get a plate of oysters (I recommend them here) although the decor is sparse and elegant with a good bar scene right up front
A member of our party is a vegetarian. I had to request the vegetarian menu, as it was not initially offered. He chose a ravioli dish and got about three ravioli. Completely ridiculous. I can understand having portion control and wanting the food to look nice on the plate, but people shoud not go away hungry, especially at the prices charged.
We decided to skip a full entree and just enjoy the raw bar and appetizers. We ordered ceviche and oysters, crab cakes, the tofu, and and the ahi tuna nicoise. All dishes were yummy, interestingly flavored, and fresh. To finish off, we shared the peach cobbler with ice cream on the side. Delicious! and huge- definitely recommend it for two people. Our waiter was helpful and gave us the right mix of attention. He didn't disappear and he wasn't in our faces. It was pricey but we felt it was not out of range with a restaurant of its type. We will go again.
My wife and I expected more from this place. We'd heard good things and liked their approach to having few pre-made ingredients. Her mock-mojito was quite good, but that was about it. We sent back the creamy mussels with french fries -- it had very little flavor, even with adding salt. We instead had the bacon-wrapped, chorizo-stuffed dates. This was better, but not nearly as good as we expected such a dish to be. She ordered the risotto and it was bland (it was quite good when reheated at home the next day with pecorino-romano shavings). My Scratch Fried Chicken was also lacking of flavor. It did have a side of cornbread pudding that I enjoyed very much.
Nothing outstanding at Scratch, but it's a good reliable bet for an above average meal with good cocktails. The bar area is crowded with young people.
We normally go to cascal but decided to cross the street and do Scratch. Winner!! Ended up having a 3 hr dinner and trying most of the menu. Amazing!!
It's hard to find good restaurants in the south bay. Scratch is like eating at a restaurant in SF but with lots of space and lots of tables. We've come here several times for brunch, lunch and even ordered out for dinner (we have a baby). They area always really accommodating with our baby and the service is timely. Love the mac n' cheese, flat breads, CUBAN and really everything is good. I wish there were more places like this down here.
It's good, but not great. The coffee was lukewarm for 2 of my guests. I asked for my bread dry, and it came with butter. Our waitress was apologetic about the mistakes. The potatoes were delicious. The omelette was good. The room was very nice. I'm sure they're better for dinner, so if someone invites me, I'll go, but I probably won't suggest it.
