Sampan - Philadelphia
Do not make a reservation here and expect to be seated on time. Booked at 10 pm reservation for a large party and sat down an hour later. Don't waste your time calling them to confirm or update your reservation "they do not speak to the restaurant". My party and I stood around in the crowded bar area waiting, without updates, until we had to get a manager involved. After we sat down for dinner, the experience was great! The waiter was very nice and the food is amazing. Will not return to the restaurant with a large party, it almost ruined my sisters birthday!!
Fabulous meal and great service- a bit noisy but a fabulous experience overall!
Great flavors, not greasy, delicious Asian food! Also really great customer service!
Sampan Philadelphia is a nice little restaurant in a great location. Celebrating the holidays and our friend's 50th birthday. First time there. Waiter was great. Service was fast. Food was excellently prepared. Portions could have been a little bigger. We did the sampler special, we were told it would be split up evenly for 4. Could have used a little more food but overall I would definitely recommend Sampan. Hope to be back there again.
Great place for food and ambiance. Not kid friendly at least at night.
So loud! So seemingly chaotic! But what service and what delicious food! Sampan richly deserves its reputation and all the hype.
It was my daughter’s birthday. We had a group of her friends. The staff was incredibly accommodating and made the night special.
Second visit. Great food and interesting.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent!
-Chicken Bao Bun
30 minute wait with a reservation!! But great food and ppl
Always enjoy eating and drinking at Sampan. Had a great time celebrating my birthday with friends last Friday.
Super annoyed - put in Open Table notes it was my daughter's 20th bday and that was why we were there - made sure the hostess also knew. Nothing was acknowledged. Server (Atalia A) was SUPER rude - acted as if she was doing us a favor taking the order. No one every acknowledged bday - waitress took my husband's wine glass and never asked if he wanted another - finally he just told her to bring one. Waitress did lousy job explaining dishes. Was an overall REALLY awful experience and was super disappointed since we brought my daughter and her boyfriend (both students at Drexel) to Sampan for the celebration.
I went there on a date. Everything was good.
1st time visit, great food and service...
Food was great, and our waiter was amazing.
As usual the food was outstanding but service was a bit suspect. I am visibly handicapped yet we were jammed into a tight corner in which my wife and I were constantly banged into by wait staff. Waitress took our drink and food order and then my wife headed to use the rest room. Within seconds the first 2 dishes were already at our table and they continued to bring dishes even though my wife was still in the rest room. The entire meal felt completely rushed and as if they were trying to get rid of us. Staff constantly tried to remove dishes from our table before we were even done with the dish. Lastly no more than 5 people in succession came by to check on us. Enough already. There is such a thing as up your rear too much. Places that do this do not understand true customer service and never give you a minute to breath and enjoy your food. Of course any of those 5 times was an opportunity for me to say something but I kept quiet.
We came to Sampan for the second year in a row while visiting Philadelphia. We were seated very promptly (we were a group of 8 so this is notable). Food was very good and comes out quite quickly. The kids love the soup dumplings and the ice cream sushi. Everything was very good -- food and drinks.
Went for my dads 60th birthday and everyone had a fantastic experience! Food is amazing!
Our meal was amazing! Can’t wait to go back. Service was also amazing
This is my go to place! The edamame dumplings, kim chee fried rice, and rock shrimp are a must!
We had a great dinner at Sampan! Cheesesteak Bao buns are a must, as well as the Satay. Our server was attentive and very patient as he had to explain the menu to us several times. But my only regret is that we didn’t do the chef’s tasting menu. We were a party of 6 (3 couples) and decided to order on our own. They send the food as it is ready so there were points where some people had food and others didn’t. If we had all partook in the chef’s tasting menu this probably wouldn’t of been the case. My main complaint however is the hostess. She was very unfriendly and somewhat pretentious. Unfortunately two of our people were running late, so she said she could seat us but we had to order right away. Our reservation was at 7:30 on a Sunday, and they close at 9. I’m not sure how they thought they may be able to seat another party at our table. It wasn’t a great way to start off the meal. Host stand needs to be more friendly, maybe crack a smile?
The service was excellent. Food was good but some of the portions could have been bigger. It seemed pricey for the quality and the portions. The restaurant was too dimly lit.
Fun environment, great food
Literally one of the best meals I've had in Philadelphia!
1. They messed up our reservation. We were late for our 8:30 reservation and I called them on our way around 8;50. They told me they would put us on a new reservation, 9:30pm. When we got there, they told me there is a counter seating available right away but otherwise 15min waiting. I told her it was birthday dinner, so we would wait 15min for the table. But after waiting for a while, I asked how long we need to wait, they told me 1hour from that point!!! At that time it was already 9:30pm, which was our new reservation time. But they kept saying because we missed 8:30 reservation, we need to wait 1 hr for a table, which will be seated nearly 10:30! I was sure they messed up my reservation but no apologies. At the end we just took the counter seats that was already available since we got there. Ruined the birthday dinner experience.
2. Horrible server
Our server brought 3 wrong dishes out of 6 dishes we ordered. Oh, that doesn’t count another wrong order for my wine! And later we ordered another round of wines, and she came back 5 min later, asking what the order was..... !
Ordered dessert cake, she didn’t give us spoons ...... she didn’t come over our place for a while, we had to look and find her to get our spoons... this server was just wrong. I don’t understand how she works as a waitress.
Food was salty and strong. We didn’t finish most of foods.
The general atmosphere was great though. But recommend the double knot next door....
Not going back to Sampan
The food here is always exceptional. I would recommend coming during off peak hours for the best experience. Lunch/happy hours or weeknights.
Food was very disappointing. Very very disappointing... would not go back and won’t recommend.
Way over priced for amount of food you get. We got the $45 sampler and the portions were extremely small even for a "sampler"
Our server was very knowledgeable and great energy. Service was great. Food wasn't.
The best. 10/10
Always a fan of Sampan! Since moving to Philly 3 years ago, I have been looking for the best food at an affordable price. While Sampan I’m on the pricier side, the value and experience is unparalleled. Brought some friends for a Birthday Dinner and the only thing I wish were different were the noise level. If you go with a part greater than 4-5, it’s really difficult to hear people on the other end of the table. In fact, I went to their sister restaurant Double Knot the day after I went to Sampan — great experience and would definitely recommend for a special occasion.
Sampan’s was highly recommended and did not disappoint. The food was delicious. Can’t wait to go again!
The only issue I have with Sampan is that even if you make a reservation you are not guaranteed to get seated at a reasonable time. I've been here on multiple occasions and the average wait time is 30-45 mins even with a reservation! That's ridiculous. There needs to be a limit on how long people can linger at the table after paying the bill or Sampan needs to respect the guests that made the effort to make a reservation so that they may be seated at a reasonable time. Otherwise, food and value is always superb and just hope they fix this one issue!
Food was great! Super crowded for a Monday night. Definitely get a reservation. Disappointing that HH specials are only available at the bar!
The food was very good but the whole dinner was to stressfull. We booked a table for 6 Person in advance, however we had all the feeling, that we have to rush! Which wasn't enjoyable at all, too bad for the good food.
A group of 7 of us went for my friends bachelorette party and had an amazing time. I definitely recommend going before 7 pm to take advantage of their daily happy hour. For me, the highlights were the beef satay, brussel sprouts, and chocolate peanut butter dessert, but everything we ate was delicious! It does get pricey after happy hour ends, but it is worth it! One of the best meals I've had in a while!
Third time eating at Sampan, and as always a very enjoyable meal - traffic problems caused us to miss our 6:00 reservation, but the staff was accommodating, and managed to get us seated within 10 minutes of our delayed arrival. Food as always was exceptional - and working on a timetable due to orchestra tickets, we enjoyed our full meal with enough time to get to the Kimmel.
Service was very good, but the food was not. Not quite sure what the hype is or the raving reviews. Basic food, some dishes were flavorless and others were equivalent to what you’d experience at a chain restaurant, drenched in sauce. Overall, subpar and disappointing.
Hands down the best happy hour in the city- such a great deal for food and drinks, and goes till 7pm! Great energy and vibe- can get a little loud so not great for quiet conversations if you are looking for that kind of atmosphere.
Pat is awesome 👏🏼 Food always amazing
