Sampan - Philadelphia
Food & service was great
We loved sorting outside and watching the city go by. Our server however was less than par, although friendly, he was inattentive and seemed to be unaware of the practice of checking on his bar orders.
Waited almist 15 minutes after reservation time. They did comp us with an appetizer. Food was delicious... service average.
The food was kind of bland and subpar (particularly the dumplings), the service was fine but not particularly friendly, and it was too loud and dark to see or hear anything. I will say that the restaurant is very beautiful and the food looks very good, it just doesn’t taste as good as it looks. I thought it was overpriced for what you get.
Our server was awesome, I forgot her name though , maybe Rachael ? anyways she was outstanding, young sandy blonde hair we dined on Sunday pm august 12. She was sooooo good to us, we sat by the window facing the street , food was awesome, and that waitress was exceptional !!
Awesome food and staff attention as usual....we were on a very tight schedule to get to a show at The Mann and you made it happen....thank you!
Everything was really good. From service to the food. But there was a mold in the water cup. However, I would definitely go back again.
I have dined here often and never been disappointed.. it checks all my boxes for atmosphere great food awesome service !! It's a winner
Incredible food. Chefs tasting menu was a great deal, but so much food. Bao buns and soup dumplings are a must
Our second time to Sampan on a visit to Philly. Love the creative choices and preparations. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly.
I had put anniversary as our special occasion and nothing was done. No dessert, or app, nothing.
Despite being VERY busy, all tables and bar seats filled, the service was impeccable. The server always seemed to show up at just the right time to take orders, refresh drinks, check up, and provide the bill. My date and I sampled an item or two from 4 of the 6 menu sections with a total of 5 plates shared amongst two people. Everything tasted great, absolutely no complaints; and though 5 plates seemed like it might be too little food, we were both full and had leftovers.
We did the chefs tasting and the food was some of the best I’ve had in Philly.. chicken bao buns, shrimp and crab egg rolls, crab tacos, bbq beef, filet and chicken stir fry.. at the end you get mini soft serve. Cannot wait to go back !
Great food! A great meal!
Awesome spot for a friends get together! AmaIng food. Comes out as prepared and nice and hot !
Food is FANTASTIC here one of my favorites in Philly. Our waitress was wonderful and recommended the Chef’s Tasting which was fabulous. Highly recommend!
Was awful, forgot half our order and wouldn’t admit it. Wait staff was rude and portion sizes were microscopic
One of my favorites. Always great and interesting food.
Amazing as always!! Server was fantastic
Food was very good. Satay mushrooms were incredible. Shrimp pad thai was excellent. Vegetable dumplings were good. Service was nice. We had to wait an additional 30+ minutes to have a seat after our 7pm reservation where we arrived at 6:55pm. Management staff person was attentive.
Get it! Edamame dumplings are delicious
Very good food, great friendly service.
I am sorry not to be able to recommend this place. The food is inventive, delicious, and the portions seem right sized. However, and sampan is not the only restaurant that suffers from this, the noise was deafening. We did go at a busy time. Nonetheless, no restaurant should support this level of din. It’s simply made it Impossible to talk to a dining partner even seated next to you.
The food was delicious and although very busy, service was timely and quick though it dwindled a bit toward the end of our meal. It was extremely noisy and the tables were pretty close together, but we'd definitely return. Eager to try for mid-week lunch when it's a bit quieter or maybe for some apps before a concert or theater.
Wonderful service and suggestions from our waiter and a great meal! My clients loved it.
Outstanding food, awesome waiter, great prices and fantastic time!
I like the place. The food taste yummy. The food quantity to 7 course meal wasn't really enough for dinner. It was however good but we ended up going to other places to eat. I think the server should let us know that the 7 course meal isn't enough for dinner instead that's like food tasting meal.
Very pricy but also very good food. I’m not 21 so the bar was not an option, but the quality of the flavors makes up for it. I didn’t mind the noise although it was fairly loud, cramped and busy. My only complaint is that when they recommend 3 or 4 small plates per person, with the plates labeled “small” being $8 and some of the smaller plates being $9 to around $15, 3 or small plates raises the price very quickly, and it feels like they’re trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. I would recommend for groups, just don’t pay for the table, and make sure everyone is ready to spend a minimum of $25.
The service was fast and friendly, the food and drinks were excellent. The server helped us pick the right amount of food for our party size and was knowledgeable about the dishes and ingredients. We had dined at Sampan the last time we were in town a couple of years ago and were delighted to find that they've maintained their high standards. We look forward to returning.
Sampan was amazing. Definitely will be returning soon.
We had the bao buns - delicious! The chicken bao bun is spicy and the pork bao bun is sweet. We had the general Tso soup dumpling- it was tasty for what it was BUT if you have had authentic soup dumplings, this may disappoint you. The dumplings had very little fluid in them and were stuck together when served. The flavor of the chicken was on point.
The food selection was amazingly plenty. It featured unsurprising from the east and also the western style. We chose the tasting menu with seven plates, some were larger than expected. The service was prompt and courteous. The noise level however was pretty high and the lighting was too dim to read the menu, nor to really appreciate the food, especially on the tables away from the window.
We will definitely come back and will select a window seat for an even better experience!
Good food. Good vibe, good service. Will go again.
Sampan was awesome! Would highly recommend their Happy Hour! It was a great deal and great food. Awesome for a fun date night or a night out with friends.
Huge disappointment. Not worth the money (~$50/person).
Food: Very salty. Not authentic Chinese or Asian flavor.
Ambience: Super noisy. Very difficult to hear each other.
Service: poor. Was refused seating when I arrived. The receptionist insisted that they only seat fully arrived groups. But the seating area was very empty, while the doorway and the bar area were super crowded, which makes this policy absurd.
Won't go there again, and won't recommend any friends to go there.
Most amazing birthday dinner! The waiter was great and the service was amazing! Be back soon!
We had the pleasure of meeting the manager, Justin. He was very kind and ran us through all the specials, as well as stayed to talk for a few minutes since we were from out of town. I would definitely recommend this restaurant in the future. If you are lucky Justin will be working again!
I was hoping the vibe at Sampan would be an ideal date night, but it wasn't. I chose to do the tasting menu for my date and I and the amount and quality of food we got just wasn't worth the price at all, and it was way too loud in there. If it's noisy, I don't mind but we couldn't even have a conversation unless we were leaning in practically kissing each other to talk. Never again.
Had a reservation for 6:30 and we didn't arrive until 6:45, which wasn't too big of a deal. I think they ended up giving our reservation away. I wasn't really mad with that. We just didn't sit until 7. Not a big deal. I kind of deserved that, and I am sure it was tough considering it was a Friday night and we had 9 people. We had come for quick apps and drinks before an event at SPiN. The server was nice and friendly. She was attentive and was very thoughtful. The manager also treated us well as he was paying attention, asking questions, and poured water for us several times as we had some people who were a bit thirsty after the spicier foods. The drinks came out pretty slow, but the food came out quickly. Unfortunately, we didn't get one dish delivered to our table, but what can you do? I was a little disappointed as the one dish that didn't come out was the birthday girl's. I had already paid for the meal and they did offer to adjust the bill, but it wasn't that big of a deal to me and we really needed to get to the next place. We had food there waiting for us anyway. I would go back with or without a big group. Just be ready to wait a bit longer as per usual with bigger groups. The food is absolutely amazing, and the atmosphere is great for a Friday night out in the city.
