Great service, awesome vegan menu additions.
We went for the vegan chef challenge. The butternut squash ravioli was unimpressive. There were only 3 small ravioli with very little squash inside, plus it was so spicy you couldn't really taste any flavor. And to top it off, it was over priced at $12 for the 3 small ravioli.
Interesting and flavorful dishes with their origins in traditional Indonesian dishes but with a modern twist. Fun, lively atmosphere. Good place for a date or with a group of friends. I am a regular and have taken many friends there... everyone always loves it.
The food never disappoints. Tried the fried branzino with coconut ice cream after and was in love. We had great wine recommendation from sommelier.
A bit noisy, but a pleasant atmosphere. Very tasty food!
First timers to Sama Sama with some out of town friends - our table was ready for us, the service was exceptional and the food both delicious and interesting. The same for the cocktails. The noise level was the only down side - it was very very noisy. We will most definitely return but try for another day and time and just by ourselves instead of trying to visit with friends over dinner.
I usually love this place and take out of town guests. This time, it was much noisier than I recall and wait for food was long. Maybe it was just that the table next to us was really loud. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as previously. I’ll try again in a few months.
Favorite spot in town. Best food, cocktails, fun/hip/young vibe. Beautiful patio, great service! A must if you’re in SB!
Awesome Group Dinner we had -- Everything was on point !!!
Always love their interesting food. And the service is usually excellent. They were very busy but still managed to take our order promptly, get our food and drinks out and check up on how we were doing a couple of times. It is a bit noisy in the restaurant, especially when it is busy.
Interesting, fresh tasting food. My favorites were the Gado Gado salad, the wings and the Chinese sausage with crispy rice. Be sure to get the Sambal trio for only $3, that provides three great condiments
Cute space. Inventive cocktails. Lovely food. Try the wings!
The BEST food
Visited early on a Friday so no crowd. Ordered off the happy hour menu and pricing was very reasonable. Food was fresh and delicious and service was excellent.
Absolutely love this restaurant! I went there for Santa Barbara restaurant week the first time and the flavours were wonderful!! So when my team at work wanted to go for dinner and a colleague recommended this- I was excited!! We literally ordered everything on the menu and they were all a HIT. Fantastic flavours, wonderful service! Only thing that upset me was- seems the waitress heard wrong and ordered an extra plate of rice. When it was brought to out table, we mentioned we didn’t order it but would happily take it. They took it back to the kitchen and threw it out!! That was such a waste and I was incredibly disappointed there would rather throw it away. We would have paid for it anyway. Otherwise, fantastic food.
The food was great. The drinks were tasty. But the service was sub par. Our table was not ready when we arrived, but grabbing a drink at the bar was a non-issue while we waited. However, 45 minutes later we had not been seated and it appeared they had forgotten about us. Sure enough, the hostess admitted they lost us because of "system issues." They didn't do anything because of the error and at the end of the night they actually tried to double charge us for the drinks we already paid for at the bar. Not sure if this is a new place or they just had a bad night, but overall the service didn't match the quality of food, drinks, and vibe.
I visited for SB Restaurant Week.and was very disappointed with my experience.
Our reservation was at 6:00 pm; I arrived a few minutes before and was told the table was not yet ready - there were a few open tables at the restaurant but I waited and ordered a drink from the bar. After being seated at our table I still did not receive my drinks for another 10 minutes - the bar was not crowded. My drink finally arrived after almost 20 minutes and my friends ordered their drinks which took another 15 minutes to arrive.
We order food at about 6:20 and told our server all 3 courses from the special menu.
By 6:45 we still did not even have our appetizers (one papaya salad and two orders of lollipop wings). When we asked our server about the food and told her we had a show we were going to, she said she would let the chef know to fire everything up. We assumed everything was already in the works! I am baffled how guests can be left to sit at a table with drinks and not even appetizers, 45 minutes after our reservation time!!!
We ordered another round of drinks which showed up within 5 minutes. As we waited for food and wondered what was taking so long in a restaurant that was not super busy, there were 3 employees standing around folding napkins. There was no urgency to check on the guests or orders.
Our appetizers finally arrived at 6:55 and 2 out of 3 dinner dishes arrived around 7:05, the final one around 7:10. We weren't even able to thoroughly enjoy the meals and the food was way too hot!
Our server brought the desserts packed to-go and we paid the check to leave by 7:20. We tasted it later in the evening, but the experience was completely lost.
Restaurants participating in SB Restaurant Week should be showcasing their businesses for future success and should be prepared with the food choices from the set menu.
Went to Sama Sama kitchen to celebrate my birthday with some friends. Each dish that was served was better than the next. Amazing flavors and fun to share the dishes tapas style. This is my favorite restaurant in SB!
Indescribably delicous. Loud.
Highly recommended. Wish they were open for lunch.
The food was insanely good. My husband and I had a great date night and can’t wait to go back. The service was a little slow but any server can off an off day and it didn’t take away from the overall experience.
Had three shared plates: Brussels sprouts, noodles and salad. All were good with noodles and Brussels outstanding.
Limited wines by glass.
Shared long tables in some parts of room.
Noise level is very loud, so not an intimate place. But very lively and really good food. Love that it’s next door to Granada and they take reservations!
I’ll be back.
Great food and just fantastic service.
The food is always impeccably prepared and delicious! But the service was very slow (our server often didn't check on us for long stretches, making our dining experience over 3 hours!) and there was a side door open that let in very cold air so 3 of the people in our party were cold the whole time.
Sama Sama was super super. Food was unusual and excellent. Service was helpful and allowed us to enjoy the different dishes without feeling rushed in the least bit.
The food was OK, way too expensive for what you get. The server from Brazil was amazing! And so was the atmosphere
Share plates spicy and sweet. Upscale drinks.
Been there before. Love the unique food.
The food was pretty tasty and our server was friendly and attentive. We had a rough start with our table not being ready and a lot of confusion about where to seat us. We ordered dishes to share (chicken wings, ribs, broccolini tofu stir fry, crispy rice salad) -- flavorful, but too heavy as many dishes were fried. The restaurant needs to balance out the heavier foods by adding a simple rice side or refreshing, light salad to accompany the items.
It was great! Amazing food!
The food was good, sauces were fantastic. Favorites were the Brussels sprouts and the ribs. But there was a HUGE lag between dishes, and we had to remind our waitress of the items still to come out. There was no silverware on our table, we had to ask for it and one of our party didn’t have a glass for the first 30minutes. For a $200 bill for 5 people didn’t feel we got our money’s worth. Plus it was extremely loud!! At times we couldn’t hear the person talking even when they were sitting right beside us. Won’t return.
Great food, but extremely loud. Horrible service, good bar atmosphere
Food was really tasty, the Branzino fish was excellent ( and spicy which we like ), but took awhile to come, so be aware of that. The service was just ok, but they were pretty busy, as it was a Saturday night.
My husband and I tried Sama Sama for a date night recently. We both felt that the cocktails and food were excellent, but the service was below average. We would be willing to give it another try because the food and drinks were so delicious. We also felt that it was a good value.
Sama Sama is one of my favorite date night asian fusion dinner spots in Santa Barbara (the only one)? The type of place that you wish you had 10 stomachs due to the delicious variety of their menu. It is very conveniently located downtown Santa Barbara on state st.
One of my go-to dishes is the hot wing appetizer- super fresh crispy, juicy mouth watering wings. Literally the best wings I have ever had, all my staff dinners are now here, not solely because of the wings but partially :)
We were on an appetizer hype tonight so we also got the papaya salad and paan seared octopus. The papaya was incredibly spicy, the flavors were muddled together to perfection- it was so refreshing. The octopus was cooked incredibly well- crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Lastly, I ordered the Chinese Sausage Fried Rice which I probably should've saved for another visit. We were already stuffed after the appetizers! It was piping hot, the Sausage was perfectly cooked, I was eating it as if I hadn't eaten in days. The flavor was rich, creamy, flavorful and crunchy in the best ways.
Serive is warm, ultra-attentive and prompt with bringing out our meals. (Everything comes out the PERFECT temperature) I'm sure at some point.
Thank you Sama Sama for a wonderful visit, as usual. This review was long overdue and am so happy my fellow yelpers see my yummy perspective of this place! See you tonight!!!
The food is always stellar. We had the jidori wings, which were scrumptious and a must have always, Brussels sprouts, which were so lovely and umami and sweet and sour. Delish! The ribs with steak fries. Ribs were fabulous. Fries were oh so yummy though a bit too oily, and a noodle dish (mi goreng?) which was good- not super special, but was a perfect accompaniment to the other dishes. We are every bite.
Service, which is usually kind of slow, was great. Our waitress was genuine and sweet and took great care of us.
They are a bit lacking in the dessert department, but we were so full it was a blessing.
We loved the brussel sprouts. The kitchen was out of most of the larger dishes but what they had we liked.
An amazing meal and best dinner experience in california! Everything we ordered was unique and delicious; Brussel sprouts octopus and Nasi goreng. Service was very friendly and it was nice not to be rushed through our meal like a lot of other restaurants in LA. Highly recommend for a casual yet sophisticated dinner and delicious cocktails too!
One of the best meals I've had this year. All the flavors were perfect, accessible but authentic. Loved the interior design. Service was friendly and laidback. Not cheap but worth the price.
Was really impressed with what the kitchen at SAMA SAMA turned out. I fell in LOVE absolute and deep, deep LOVE with their Crispy Brussel Sprouts (CBS for short). Who in the world would think to caramelize fish sauce and add dates to brussels sprouts (amongst other things)...you must try this dish if you like sprouts even just a little bit. Highly recommend..great flavors await you at SAMA SAMA Kitchen.
Sama Sama has a great happy hour menu and the service is incredibly friendly and always helpful with menu suggestions. Great local vibe and would highly recommend trying this great little Santa Barbara gem!
