We had a great dinner at Roy's! The food was good, though for the price I think we expected something a little more impressive. The poke appetizer was delicious, but not nearly enough for four people to enjoy. I had the sea bass for my main course and I thought the vegetables and sauce were great together, but it wasn't quite the right flavor for the sea bass for my preferences. The coconut cheesecake was a standout - fantastic! Cocktails were amazing and the view of the marina is unmatched. Overall a great experience!
Indoor seating felt dismal and like a mausoleum - but outdoors was cold. Staff was very nice, but place was out of a lot of things and espresso machine was broken... Food ok but not awesome. Disappointing - felt like they were trying to get back into swing of things and making effort - but were not there yet.
Dinner @ Roys was ok. The Macadamia Encrusted Mahi Mahi was ok, but dry. The butterfish was good, but everything was lukewarm. Bottom line, everything was ok but it was not the experience that I was hoping for.
Our experience was better at Roys on Genesse Ave. The waiter did a good job overall. Only minus was he never smile, even he joked along with us, maybe he smile under the mask but you can tell by the eyes if people smile, right? After a wonderful dinner we ended up having paying for the parking, the hostess gave us a the validation pass but it was expired on Nov 2020, card wasnt valid. We will come back sometimes. Food was great.
Our waiter tonight for Mother’s Day dinner on the patio seemed uninterested in his job. He was mediocre at best. Didn’t bring cocktail napkins for our drinks. Didn’t make an effort to get to know us or recommend anything. The server brought over our potsticker appetizer and said he would bring back the plates which never arrived. We didn’t want the potstickers to get cold so we just ate them from the plate they were brought out in. Waiter never came by to ask if we wanted another drink as I was finishing mine. The clean up lady had to give us cocktail napkins and wipe up spillage from appetizers because we had to reach our mouth from center of table, she was great and doing a good job. By the way we tipped her separately. Waiter didn’t ever come by to ask how our food was until we were basically done. He should have come by within minutes of having served our entree in case we had a problem. The patio was only about a quarter fill so I don’t think the waiter had any excuse to not be more attentive. The food was delicious, but I’m sorry to say because of the service I don’t think I’ll be dining here again. I expect more from a San Diego bayside higher end restaurant.
If you are expecting a legitimate Roy's experience you will be disappointed. Service and food are below par and certainly do not hold to the traditional Roy's standards. Yours truly, Very Disappointed in San Diego
Good food, scenery, and service. For the price of entrees, we expected a little more high end service. Good times though
Went for Mother’s Day and the food was amazing. Only negative was they teased us with a full menu-but only have a few items available since we were 45 minutes before the lunch/dinner menu items would be available. Other restaurants have bent the rules with this- BUT this super strict with their menu times. Disappointing considering it was Mother’s Day. Regardless the food we had was incredible and 10/10.
VERY DISAPPOINTED TO HAVE SUCH A LIMITED "NON ROYS MENU"
WORST OMLET EVER
They had a mishap with the menu. They gave us a large menu, but then told us we could only order off the left hand side of the menu, the right had side was not available. We had an extremely limited amount of choices for a Mother's Day. Also, we ordered a bottle of Prosecco, and got glasses instead. Finally, the food was not great. The Bearnaise sauce on the crab cakes was lumpy, and the seafood on the omelette was small and dried out.
We had a great time celebrating Mother's Day on their patio- food was delicious and service was excellent. Would definitely return for another celebration!
Over was great and good food. Just bad communication took my bf for his birthday and I guess the host never told our server and didn’t bring the dessert out.
Outstanding service and fantastic food as always. We missed the seasoned edamame they used to serve, but that’s a very minor detail. Made for an awesome early Mother’s Day dinner for my wife and family!
The food was consistent, quality wise.
I have been to this location and the location that has permanently closed in La Jolla a lot of times. Their service has been great in the past but they are just ramping back up so I am hoping they will go back to their glory days.
I ordered a cocktail and it was below par for the price I paid. For that price, my expectation was an umbrella , a lounge chair and a spray tan.
The melting chocolate soufflé was amazing. The chocolate lava finally flowed. It was a hit and a miss on several occasions in the past.
The moment you walk in, you are greeted with wonderful hospitality and smiles all around. Our waitress was superb and helpful as well as a very good listener to our questions and requests. They don't bother you every 5mins with questions but come at the right moments to refill your water, remove empty plates and replenish used silverware with new pieces for the next portion of your meal. The environment is not so loud you can't hear the servers and the menus was clean and clutter free.
We waited an hour for our entrees and the food was horrific, over cooked, over salted and way over priced. We were blind sided. Our waiter was pleasant and doing the best he could. I'm sure it's the result of not enough staff due to COVID fears or unemployment, but it sure hurt the pocketbook!
Our server was great but the food was nothing out of the ordinary, I was expecting more for their price!
Food is amazing
Hawaiian martini is best drink in town
Teddy us amazing bartender
Ordered appetizers and dinner without a problem. Waiter was hard to track down. People who were seated after we were received their meal first. Manager was rude after not receiving our food over and hour after being seated. Horrible service. We walked out.
The food, service, atmosphere was fantastic. Only hitch is if you’re not staying at the Marriot it’s a bit tricky finding it and then getting back out front to meet a Lyft driver.
Waiter attentiveness was a little off (we had to flag him down a few times) and drink/food service was a little slow with which both quirks are very unusual with my experience at Roys. Usually its top notch all they way around. Hopefully it was just a blip. Still would come back for the normally over-the-top service.
Will say the service and Cocktails were amazing !! The only thing I would say is I wish the food was warmer when we received it.
First and not the last time! The food was great! The drinks were amazing and most of all our server Alex was amazing! Can’t wait to comeback and try some more awesome dishes.
The food was excellent and service on point all in typical Roy’s fashion. Had the seared Ahi and it was perfectly seared and super tender. They are practicing sanitation for COVID and social distances. Be prepared to pay for parking at the hotel as there is no other place to park and walk.
Had a wonderful time, the food was amazing as always.
It was ok. The room doesn’t come off like fine dining. The food was a little bland. Server was nice but to spend $130 on a meal for 2, I think we could have gotten a better value elsewhere.
Went for my wife’s birthday. Food was cold and tasteless. Would never recommend this places.
They are incredibly proud of their food prices. The service was adequate, but tipping was a hard swallow.
Inadequate staffing lead to long delays in the kitchen and sushi area. When main course finally came out, fish was overcooked and dry. Beurre blanc was just a flavorless puddle of grease. Waitstaff eanest but ultimately unhelpful at creating a smooth flowing dining experience. Roy’s used to be good, but has deteriorated with each visit. Vastly overpriced for the quality of the experience.
Great location, delicious food, outstanding service. Always an enjoyable experience.
The food was delicious! Recommend the butterfish!
The meal was good not great. The BBQ short ribs were the mvp of the whole dining experience.
I’d definitely recommend happy hour.
Birthday for my sister in law. When we arrived, the entire restaurant was empty except for one other party of 4. We were seated in the corner, right next to the occupied table, with over 10 empty tables just in our area. We asked to be changed and were subjected to a distinctly unprofessional host to make this easily accommodated request. Strike 1.
The remainder of our meal was excellent for the 3 of 4 people. The order of Blackened Ahi was so small- little cubes of fish - that it was embarrassing. ANYWHERE you get Ahi one gets a nice fillet sized portion and not cut in such a small portion as to look like a child’s plate. Strike 2.
Finally we preordered two soufflé portions to be shared per couple. Only one came, with a candle, but we had to reorder the second soufflé which took an additional 30 minutes. Strike 3.
This is not the kind of meal one spends almost $400 and getting the let down experience. We also have a home in Hawaii and will not be thinking of Roy’s at any location for entertaining out of town guests or others.
We were made to feel uncomfortable and a nuisance at this restaurant. The floors were dirty and there were no waiters to attend to us even though we made a reservation.
We have eaten at Roy’s Waterfront many times before, so this was a disappointing experience for us!
Our reservation was at 8:45pm on a Friday night. We were seated promptly and we ordered our usual pre-meal mai tais. About 10 after being seated, we overheard several other tables around us commenting on how long they had been there. The table next to us ended up walking out after waiting over an hour for their order.
The wait staff was apologetic, explaining they were backed up in the kitchen. We asked for bread, to which we were informed they don’t serve bread anymore in an attempt to cut costs.
We ordered a sushi roll, the butterfish and katzu chicken. We were luckier than other patrons and only waited about 30 minutes for our order. The food, however, was not up to the normal Roy standard. The katzu was like chicken tenders and the butterfish portion was very small.
We have frequented Roy’s all over the country and this was, by far, our worst experience.
My friends and I really enjoyed Roy’s! The food and environment was wonderful. It was our first time there and will be back again!
It was for a best friend’s birthday. The service could have been a little more attentive, but the food was exceptional.
We frequent this location of Roy’s often, being one of our favorites. The experience was only a bit disappointing in that my husband I were celebrating a big anniversary, unable to celebrate last year due to Covid lockdowns, this one was particularly meaningful. When I confirmed reservation the hostess acknowledged anniversary; when we arrived the hostess wished us a happy anniversary. After Dinner came, server didn’t ask if we wanted dessert, so we ordered one. In the mean time, diners next to us got the typical special event dessert. Ours came, no mention of our day or celebration. What was the point of asking the occasion? Maybe shouldn’t feel disappointed, but we felt invisible. Never had that feeling here before.
Food was outstanding as usual. The butterfish is highly recommended. Service was very good. The cocktails were disappointing unfortunately. My wife couldn't taste any wine in her sangria and I couldn't taste any bourbon in my drink. We went somewhere else for our cocktails after dinner.
