Very good food, service and location on the water, a must try
Food was amazing.
Shame on Roy’s for running their restaurant understaffed and with very limited menu. Covid restrictions are lifting everywhere but not here. Our server worked his tail off (also the ONLY bartender) but it took over an HOUR to get anything to eat which was terrible for our 2 kids. We were told no bread -due to Covid. We were told no menu substitutions -due to Covid. Understaffed throughout the restaurant -due to Covid as employees are choosing unemployment over showing up to do the job (CA we have a problem). Manager apologized and was running food from the kitchen after realizing we’d been there so long. Parking is also a logistical nightmare. With so many wonderful restaurants in Gas Lamp and downtown, go elsewhere or be prepared for a long night with terrible service and ok food out on the cold patio.
I’m also calling BS on the nameless reviews stating everything was “amazing!” Notice the language and brevity in many 5 star reviews looks nearly exact. 👎
They must have ran out of Butterfish and tried to give me another cut of fish. I know my butterfish and it wasn't what I was given. That is what upset me the most. Trying to say it was butterfish when in reality it wasn't. They took it back and came back with the same type of fishy fish. Of course by that time I was quite upset that they thought they could pull the wool over my eyes. I took it home and I was absolutely correct. They should have just told me that they ran out and I would have ordered something else. Over a $700 bill that I the hostess paid and I didn't eat dinner. Very disappointed as I am a frequent Roy's La Jolla client. Unfortunately they closed. Their food was always on point and even have several Holiday parties there for my staff. Not sure if I will go back to Waterfront location. Maybe just for drinks...
Wonderful brunch
The food was delicious! The service was excellent! The view was amazing!
The standard of food was subpar for a San Diego waterfront high-end restaurant. I expected the Chef to have a bit more imagination, flair and creativity. The service and cocktails were great.
Location is extraordinary!!
The Loco Moco was not Hawaiian style and the seafood omelet was very skimpy although somewhat tasty. The Easter Hawaiian Brunch was a disappointment for the money!
We live close by and decided to try Roy’s. I had previously been to the one in Scottsdale and as much as I view it as a “chain”, I thought we’d give it a go. Not a positive experience. The service was slow, but thoughtful and detailed, so I don’t want to be too harsh since we are still navigating Covid challenges, but the bathroom was in absolute disarray. One bathroom had no toilet paper, one was filthy, and no paper towels to dry your hands. For what’s supposed to be a nice place, this was not a good sign during a pandemic. The food was fine (not the best I ever had), as was the ambience, but I think they’re really making their money off tourists and I know plenty of other better places to check out with a view, incredible food, and that care about their bathrooms. By the way, I let the hostess know about the restroom, and it wasn’t much better 30 minutes later.
The service was amazing. They greeted us so friendly and the food was amazing!
Beautiful night great food.
Overall everything was great. Just two things that could have been better:
1. The braised beef short ribs were a bit stringy, but tender. 2.The chocolate lava cake was smaller than we remembered, but still delicious.
The cocktails were great as well as the lobster soup and the crab roll. The 4 fish dish was great especially the seared ahi and the black cod. The other two fish were just a tad overcooked, but all the flavors were wonderful.
Service was great! Glad to be back having had our Covid-19 vaccinations. We spend most of our special celebrations at Roy's.
We sat outdoors. The restaurants seemed to be understaffed. It took 25 minutes before the server came over. Some one else saw us waiting and came over to take our drink order (which arrived 15 minutes later). The food was mostly very good. Stingy offerings on some of our orders. The server was nice, but there was no offering of anything for the amount of time waited. I would not recommend.
We waited for 40 minutes after being sat down and no one came to the table. So we left. I know that things are just starting back up with covid. But don’t be so greedy and take so many tables if you can service them
We love Roy's! The food is always fabulous and the service is outstanding...BUT this Roy's needs to get cleaned...from the bathrooms to the filthy glass. The whole place could use an update. Finger prints all over the glass and dusty. Even our table cloth was stained. We got there right after it opened and were probably the third customers inside. The manager should be paying close attention to details. Very dirty!
Absolutely brilliant dining experience; we had requested an oceanfront table and that was provided. Our server, Gilbert, provided with an European level of service. We like to really enjoy our food and drinks and don’t like to be rushed.
He is very professional and even gave us a couple of suggestions on the menu upon our request.
We had dined here before but the service left a lot to be desired. This time the service was excellent and the food was amazing. We will definitely be back.
It would have been great if there weren’t loud obnoxious women talking about topics we didn’t want to hear while outside at sunset with cocktails and delicious food.
Always excellent - service, food, ambiance!
Roy's has been our go-to restaurant for special occasions for 17 years. The menu is long and varied. We've tried many items and keep coming back to try more. The Butterfish is a favorite, as well as the Chocolate Souffle for dessert. The servers are always friendly and attentive.
The best fish and atmosphere in San Diego. Right on the water. Great views of the marina. Just like being in Hawaii and at other Roy's. Our waitress Kim is the best. Drinks are always full, tells us what is new to order and always makes my Family feel special. We can't wait to return in a few weeks to see everyone again. Thank you for another great meal. A hui ho.
Husbands 70th birthday
Great dinner, views and service. Will be back, soon.
The waitress wasn’t really attentive. A table that sat 30 minutes after us got their dinner before us there was a 25 minute gap between our appetizer and the one entrée we ordered and then when she brought our dessert she came back and dropped the check quicker than she had come back to our table any other time which to me is a big turn off as a prior restaurant worker.
Such a wonderful dining experience that we returned the next night with friends. Thank you for accommodating our needs and making our evenings memorable.
On vacation for my birthday!
Wonderful experience! Our waitress was excellent and attentive. She checked on us just the right amount. We sat on their patio area outside and had a nice view of the sunset and water. We would definitely come back again!
Mahalo Monday is a great deal !!!
We went there for a romantic dinner and the food and service was fantastic !
Date night with my wife was so-so. When we arrived, We stood by the usual host desk. We saw employees walking by us and no one directed us to the “new” host area outside. We had to ask as we watched the two women just chit chatting. When our waiter delivered my lobster bisque, he said, “spoon will follow.” I waited and waited and waited until my wife decided to ask for a spoon. The lobster was very dry.
Usually, we have had great experiences with Roy’s. As Hawai’i transplants, we’ve always loved supporting Roy’s business. Now, we’re wondering if we even want to return.
After all of this, I still left a 20% tip, keeping in mind everyone had struggled through Covid times. Mahalo. “Boysan”
Exceptional customer service and delicious food.
We requested inside seating and were placed outdoor. The heaters stopped working for 20m and got quite chilly...
LOVED EVERYTHING!!!!!!! We will definitely be back.
Outstanding dining experience on the terrace with excellent service. Caesar salad, fabulous fish presentations, decadent/delicious chocolate souffles -- and the Cosmos and wine perfection! Thank you, Emily, for making our evening with friends so special!!
My mai tai was weak. I get them all over the place and this barely had alcohol. Go to Ketch and have one there and see the difference. When you are spending this kind of money on drinks, you should get what you pay for.
Excellent location at the Marriott Marina!
We were so pleased to have Kimberly to be our server, one meal was misunderstood but was corrected immediately and promptly, job well done👍
The bartender teddy was pretty cool. Will be coming back enjoy that tip teddy
Awesome food & great server!
It was our first time dining at Roy's, and we were very impressed! The staff was polite and the food and service was excellent. We will come back!
