Love Roys on the Big Island but since Roys main land has been bought out, not really the same quality. Service was good but food was just OK.

We always love &enjoy Roy. The service, the food quality & the choices are excellent.
But myself truffle oil is a big no. This past Monday I had the lobster & filet. I managed
2 bites. Next Monday I will ask if it is possible without any truffle, & maybe ask over the
Phone.

Wait staff and kitchen were shorthanded. Manager told us when we asked. Dining room was full when we arrived so we had to wait 10 min in bar even though we made a reservation. When a table opened up we were seated with no menus. At least 3 waiters ignored us for 10 minutes until I spoke to the manager.

He comped is 2 cocktails and was apologetic. We eventually got our order and service was more efficient. They also brought us a free appetizer and comped at dessert that came from our open table reservation for our anniversary. Food quality was excellent as we expected from past experience. Butterfish portion size was a little small for a $43 entree. We like Roy’s and would still return but this location needs more staff and better customer service training regarding greeting new customers promptly.

Must have been an off night. We dined there Saturday night and service was awfully slow. Perhaps they had insufficient kitchen staff. Food was below par, too. They comped our dessert to try to make up for it.

Very disappointed this Valentines Day. Service was so poor. We were seated at 7:40p and were not attended until 8:10p. Our first drinks did not arrive until 8:30p. The food was good, but offset by the very slow service. Water glasses were empty and all party guests were frustrated. For the high price we paid ($250/couple) we expected far better. Next time, we’ll go to Jakes.

Fabulous food that's actually worth the price. This is our go-to for birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations (despite the distance). Some variation between locations (each chef is given latitude to be creative), but the classics for which they are famous (like miyosaki butterfish and lobster potstickers) are typically available everywhere.

Celebrated Valentines Day a day early to avoid having a set menu on actual vday. Our server was very attentive and food was delicious. 6pm dinner reservation was a perfect time before the actual rush of people came.

We had reservations at 5 PM for 4 people and arrived on time. We were seated at the worst table in the place. I should have requested another table.

Service was very very slow in spite of the fact that there was almost no-one else in the place. Our fist drink order took nearly 20 minutes to arrive. Food came out sporadically as well. My husbands seafood sampler entree was cold, only one scallop 2-3 prawns and a small lobster tail. My lobster bisque was loaded with giant croutons that sopped up the liquid. The other entrees are okay.
We've been going to Roy's for special occasions for years, but that will be our last. Sitting for 2.5 hours was just too much. Ridiculous. It wasn't very busy when we got there at 5 pm.

Definitely not worth the overall $157 price tag for a dinner for two and two drinks and one appetizer. Save your money and go to any other place with much more reasonable prices, better service, and better food.

Went here with the boyfriend for a date night during Restaurant week. It was our first time eating here and we were not disappointed. For the first course, we got the lobster gyoza and the braised pork ribs. The gyoza was good but the pork ribs really outshone it. There were a portion size for appetizers and had me licking my lips for more. For the entree, we got the blackened ahi and the braised beef. The ahi has a wonderful ginger salad and rice to go with it and the beef had some broccolini and mashed potatoes. I am a meat girl through and through, but the ahi was my absolute favorite. It was light yet filling and had so much flavor. For desert, we got one of each and both were delicious. The chocolate soufflé is every chocolate lovers dreams. Decadence are it’s finest.

I would recommend anyone to come here. However, ambiance could be a little better. The lights are just a little too bright and the tables are so close together that sound really travels in the space.

Reservation was at 2 PM on a Sunday for lunch. We were seated and waited 15 minutes for a server to come to the table. We were only one of two tables, and there were two servers present. We asked the hostess if we should leave or if someone would come to the table to assist us, and finally the server grudgingly came to the table. The service during the meal was miserable. The server came to the table twice, and we were their only table for which they were responsible. The food was even worse. I ordered a chicken dish which turned out to be a poor excuse for chicken strips (at $15 on the luncheon menu), served cold and tasteless. We would have been better served at KFC. In that part of San Diego, a meal at Seasons 52 or Jakes's Del Mar, or even Draft Republic across the street would have been much preferred. I would not advise anyone frequenting this establishment, and we will never return. It was an embarrassment that I suggested to my wife that we have lunch there. Very disappointing!!

This trip to Roy’s was very different than in the past. The quality of the food was not on par with our past experiences. Polenta had congealed in the bowl when it arrived, the fish was just okay and the food just seemed tired. What used to feel like a vibrant dining scene now feels like a big box dining experience. Maybe my palate has changed or t’s time to modernize a bit. I do love the comfy booths and ability to have a conversation at dinner.

The pokey I had was so strong with onion not only did they not enjoy it it’s pretty much ruined the rest of my mail my wife and I split the butter fish which we’ve had many times and like it very much but the portion was very pitiful and not a good value you’ve had mostly outstanding experiences at Roy’s so we will just write this bad one off and will come back another

Went to have an early dinner with my girlfriends...of course I started off the evening with a cocktail lol it was the first night of Restaurant Week. I started off with the lobster bisque and it was absolutely divine. The entree of the butter fish was to die for and was based in the recommendation of my friend. I finished my meal with a decadent chocolate soufflet.

Had a 9:00 dinner after a movie, and enjoyed every minute. From the manager's big smile and greeting, to the busser and Kathy our server, as well as the smiles from the line cooks, everyone was great! A later reservation can sometimes disgruntle a staff, but not at Roy's . We enjoyed the tempura app, then the delicious lobster bisque with Roy'a Asian accent, followed by the Black Cod and the Ono. Both dishes were prepared and presented expertly. And the firm Ono was most importantly moist, not always the case with this fish at other restaurants. The Hawaiian-style cocktails were yummy, and the wine list offered good options by the glass. We even got the opportunity to chat with Chef Stephanie ("Chefanie") who was bright, personable, and freely giving of her time. Thanks, Roy's we'll be back soon!

We were stuck in an overflow dining area. No menu for 10 minutes. 30 minutes for a poor drink. 2 hours to complete meal service. Fish fillet was a tiny portion and came out in pieces. Surf and turf had an all over charred flavor. Dessert looked terrible and unappetizing.

New Years Eve price fixe menu. Filet minion had no flavor, chicken was undercooked and they had to bring out a new one, kid's pasta had a sour taste to it. Staff did try to make up for it.

We've been to this location a number of times with both family and friends and have found both the food and service to be excellent. On this visit we had the chicken springrolls, Hibachi Style Salmon, Sea Scallops and New York strip steak, all of which were delicious. The staff deserves high praise and is exceptionally accommodating. On our personal top ten restaurants list for San Diego.

We went for our anniversary. The waitress was amazing she did great. At one point my water glass was moved and the next thing I know my menu knocked the water glass spills across the table. It put a damper on the evening. Over all the food was amazing like always.

We are longtime patrons of Roy's La Jolla. We dine there for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. The Butterfish and the Seafood Trio are our favorites. And the Chocolate Souffle is outstanding. We always ask for Mary to be our server. She takes very good care of us and makes ours a personal dining experience.
