Went here with the boyfriend for a date night during Restaurant week. It was our first time eating here and we were not disappointed. For the first course, we got the lobster gyoza and the braised pork ribs. The gyoza was good but the pork ribs really outshone it. There were a portion size for appetizers and had me licking my lips for more. For the entree, we got the blackened ahi and the braised beef. The ahi has a wonderful ginger salad and rice to go with it and the beef had some broccolini and mashed potatoes. I am a meat girl through and through, but the ahi was my absolute favorite. It was light yet filling and had so much flavor. For desert, we got one of each and both were delicious. The chocolate soufflé is every chocolate lovers dreams. Decadence are it’s finest.
I would recommend anyone to come here. However, ambiance could be a little better. The lights are just a little too bright and the tables are so close together that sound really travels in the space.
Reservation was at 2 PM on a Sunday for lunch. We were seated and waited 15 minutes for a server to come to the table. We were only one of two tables, and there were two servers present. We asked the hostess if we should leave or if someone would come to the table to assist us, and finally the server grudgingly came to the table. The service during the meal was miserable. The server came to the table twice, and we were their only table for which they were responsible. The food was even worse. I ordered a chicken dish which turned out to be a poor excuse for chicken strips (at $15 on the luncheon menu), served cold and tasteless. We would have been better served at KFC. In that part of San Diego, a meal at Seasons 52 or Jakes's Del Mar, or even Draft Republic across the street would have been much preferred. I would not advise anyone frequenting this establishment, and we will never return. It was an embarrassment that I suggested to my wife that we have lunch there. Very disappointing!!
Food was great as usual and our waitress was very helpful. Butterfish was a little over sauced but still great.
Our meal was prepared exactly the way we like it. Kelly is our favorite server and she did her usual fabulous job. Very nice birthday celebration.
The pokey I had was so strong with onion not only did they not enjoy it it’s pretty much ruined the rest of my mail my wife and I split the butter fish which we’ve had many times and like it very much but the portion was very pitiful and not a good value you’ve had mostly outstanding experiences at Roy’s so we will just write this bad one off and will come back another
Had a 9:00 dinner after a movie, and enjoyed every minute. From the manager's big smile and greeting, to the busser and Kathy our server, as well as the smiles from the line cooks, everyone was great! A later reservation can sometimes disgruntle a staff, but not at Roy's . We enjoyed the tempura app, then the delicious lobster bisque with Roy'a Asian accent, followed by the Black Cod and the Ono. Both dishes were prepared and presented expertly. And the firm Ono was most importantly moist, not always the case with this fish at other restaurants. The Hawaiian-style cocktails were yummy, and the wine list offered good options by the glass. We even got the opportunity to chat with Chef Stephanie ("Chefanie") who was bright, personable, and freely giving of her time. Thanks, Roy's we'll be back soon!
We were stuck in an overflow dining area. No menu for 10 minutes. 30 minutes for a poor drink. 2 hours to complete meal service. Fish fillet was a tiny portion and came out in pieces. Surf and turf had an all over charred flavor. Dessert looked terrible and unappetizing.
New Years Eve price fixe menu. Filet minion had no flavor, chicken was undercooked and they had to bring out a new one, kid's pasta had a sour taste to it. Staff did try to make up for it.
Food wss Great!
Enjoyed special they had " Mahalo Monday"
Server was Timothy was great. Would recommend.
Had a nice dinner with wonderful service. Our server went our of her way to make certain we had an enjoyable experience.
We've been to this location a number of times with both family and friends and have found both the food and service to be excellent. On this visit we had the chicken springrolls, Hibachi Style Salmon, Sea Scallops and New York strip steak, all of which were delicious. The staff deserves high praise and is exceptionally accommodating. On our personal top ten restaurants list for San Diego.
We went for our anniversary. The waitress was amazing she did great. At one point my water glass was moved and the next thing I know my menu knocked the water glass spills across the table. It put a damper on the evening. Over all the food was amazing like always.
We are longtime patrons of Roy's La Jolla. We dine there for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. The Butterfish and the Seafood Trio are our favorites. And the Chocolate Souffle is outstanding. We always ask for Mary to be our server. She takes very good care of us and makes ours a personal dining experience.
Very nice place to celebrate- just a little expensive.
I’ve dined here numerous times with no issues. When I dined here last, however, I have never been so disappointed (in any restaurant). The kitchen took a long time to prepare food. The calamari was over fried, the tocino and sinigang were tasteless, and the breast on the 1/2 chicken was more like the size of 1/2 cornished hen breast. Not once were we asked how our food was. But we still sent items back and never received an apology for the terrible dishes. I’m absolutely disgusted!!
My family and I have gone to this Roy’s on many occasions and this was by far the most disappointing visit to r have ever had, Food was burnt, service was ok-put my daughters order in wrong so had to wait for the correct food, crab fried rice was just ok, chocolate soufflé has no molten center like it was overcooked. I usually don’t ever write bad reviews but my family and I probably won’t be back to this Roy’s in the future which is unfortunate..
As a long time client I sense that the kitchen is not as upscale
As in past years tho the service remains top of the mart. Lobster
Bisque was mediocre and mahi mahi bland. Butterfish, however was
Excellent and beef dishes 4 star. Desserts 5 star
Went for Christmas Day. Restaurant was very packed but service was surprisingly good.
We had potstickers, sushi and steak. Great dinner.
Excellent food and drink far above expectations for Christmas.
Christmas meal with father. He enjoyed it
I enjoyed myself the first time there but this visit came up waaaaay short of expectation. Went there Christmas Eve for dinner. It seemed busy but any good establishment would expect that and staff appropriately. That apparently did not happen as it took almost 45 minutes to get appetizers and drinks and another 45 minutes to get our entrees. We were very disappointed with the establishment this time. The only good part of the evening was the fact that all appetizers and desserts were comp'd by the manager. Never again.
I understand how busy periods can be, and it was extremely busy on Christmas eve. Regardless, hospitality and service were good, as expected. What wasn’t expected was the disappointment in the food. The lobster was overcooked and the potatoes were burned (thankfully, the filet mignon was perfect). I should’ve said something but with the backlog of orders, I didn’t want to wait (it appeared all orders were running late). This really caught me off-guard as up until now, I’ve never had a poorly prepared meal at Roy’s.
There were just 3 of us so we took a booth which was great. We started with cocktails and calamari which was done perfectly. There was no rush so we savored every bite. Then two of us shared the wedge salad which was plenty for two after the appetizer. And our friend said the Lobster bisque is his favorite. I wanted a light dinner so I had the Poke and my husband enjoyed the scallops. Everything we order was perfect so it confirmed my choice to get my husband gift certificates for Roys for Christmas. I don’t think he will be surprised though. I love it too.
Roy's La Jolla compared the one in Seaport village has better service and parking. The ambience is better at Seaport village from a waterfront standpoint. Roys La jolla has its beaches and the mall next door. We have been coming to this location for over 3 years and the food has been great for the kids and the restaurant always fixes issues if we have any. Since we come here so often we are used to not being waited on or checked on frequently and have settled into a comfortable dynamic. I would recommend this place.
Another fabulous Mahalo Monday! One of the best deals in town.
We go to Roy’s for all our birthdays and anniversaries. This time we went for their Monday special.
It was terrific, as usual. The service is always great.
And we always have them box up leftovers for and unbelievable lunch for the next day.
We go to Roy’s about every month. In the last 5-9 months it’s been better. We go for family birthdays for years, so at least 5-10 people at a time. I think there was a change of chefs this year. In 2018, we had to return a least one meal in the party for over salted or overdone meat or seafood. The signature dessert of chocolate soufflé was even overdone a few times. This year, Surf and turf and all meals and desserts have been excellent.
The tasting menu was delicious. The service was spot on. We could hold a nice conversation over dinner.
Fish was bland. Short ribs were better last time and a bit over seasoned. Service was super slow. Took forever to get drinks and check.
Roy’s, simply put, is our favorite restaurant. Not only is the food fantastic but the staff is great, the service is impeccable and the atmosphere is fun and inviting.
Butterfish was fantastic, so delicious. Service was also great.
The 7 of us went there for a birthday lunch for 4 birthdays on a Sunday. It was not crowded, food was delicious, gave us FOUR complimentary birthday cakes since we were celebrating 4 birthdays! They took a lot of nice table pictures for us and pictures outside which was so nice to remember the occasion and celebration. The butterfish, mahi mahi, and salmon were delicious and well executed. I will go back again.
I want to give them a chance to redeem, but our family dinner was unfortunate. We waited over an hour between arrival and appetizer. My sister had to go find the server. He comped us a beverage and our desserts. However he did not just accept the error. He sounded defensive. Although he did apologize, he should have left it at that without excuses. Explanations and excuses are similar, but his approach lacked ownership.
The food was delicious, the restaurant accommodated our large family and a baby, but we were forgotten for a long time which tainted our opinion.
The food and service were impeccable. We tried the taste of the Philippines special and it was delicious. We had dinner prior to the Teddy Ball charity event at the Hyatt.
Consistently good food. Been there before and will return.
friend received food posioning. salmon was under cooked. desert was disapointing by far
Great thanksgiving pri fixe meal option. The wine didn’t pair well and not worth the add on.
I was underwhelmed by the food. It sounded great when I made a reservation but it was nothing special. We shared that my husband had a garlic intolerance when we got there. We were questioned if it was an allergy or an intolerance or he just didn’t like it. That was the wrong question. There must’ve been garlic in something he ate because he was in a lot of pain afterwards. The desert was good.
We decided to have our T-day dinner at Roy's. The dinner was great. The portions were perfectly sized (I would have appreciated more veggies, but that's just me), the turkey breast slices were well seasoned and juicy, the stuffing was tasty. The desserts were delish.
