Roy's Ko Olina Ratings and Reviews
We were on vacation wanting to go out to a nice dinner. We did not have a nice experience unfortunately. The food was not that good. The chicken piccata was overdone and tough. They sent a new one and it was a little more moist.
The macadamia nut crusted fish had no macadamia nuts and I asked why. The waiter never sent some to the table after I asked for some more. The lobster was hard and overcooked as well!
The table was wood with no tablecloth. It was folded up underneath and my dress sleeve kept snagging on the hinges. Hinges were exposed all around the table so I could not sit anywhere else.
I was so disappointed with my experience there.
Showed up at Roy’s with my family of four for the climax of our 8-day vacation on Oahu. Entering The empty Ko Olina parking lot, we thought we had made a wrong turn. No-one outside, no cars parked. It turns out, a water issue had closed the resteurant prematurely.
After all the excitement about celebrating my wifes birthday at Roy’s, we were deflated, and now left without dinner plans. Aparently, I had ignored the strange phone call from the 808 area code that would have alerted us of the closure 2 hours earlier, so on one hand I cant blame Roy’s for showing up to a closed resteurant. None the less, i was frustrated, and called them on my phone to learn more. The employee was polite but cool to my suggestion that a meal be comp’d to us for the inconvenience. He did, to his credit, ask if it would be ok if a manager call me.
Now back on the mainland, the manager did call. Honestly, he had no business being in customer service. He was mildly rude and did a poor job of hiding his contempt. All I was suggesting was a comp’d meal, for the time hassle and incovenience of the last minute closure. The missed call was on me I admitted, but in the era of junk telemarketing calls I cant be alone in ignoring strange calls. Anyways, I refused 2 free apetizers and hung up. They would have been better off not making that call. Not happy. The annual Ritual of Roy’s Hawaii is now broken for our family. I had spent $250 a year eating at Roy’s for the past 10 years but they couldn’t even see fit to acknowledge a token apology to us. I will spend my money elsewhere in the future.
We were visiting Oahu with friends and were looking forward to our dinner at Roy's that evening. After making the reservation on Open Table I called the restaurant at 10:30 AM to request outdoor seating. When we arrived at about 6 PM for our 6:45 reservation there were signs telling us that Roy's was closed. When we arrived at the door, we learned that there had been a plumbing problem and they had to cancel all reservations for the evening. I would have appreciated an email or a phone call informing us of the problem, but instead we had to scramble to find another restaurant.
Best meal we had for our whole trip. Service couldn't be better! Lovely night only wish they had the musician play a little later and be a little more Hawaiian - but food was great! If you are staying in the Ko Olina area and miss this place you have missed the boat. We thought that the Four Seasons had great food until we ate at Roy's. This was well worth the price - service, drinks, food, deserts - everything was perfect.
Very disappointed - High priced but did not expect the food quality to be less than what you get in an avg place. Great service, great location but not happy at all with food selection, portion size and taste. We have tried other places within the Ko Olina resort area - this is the worst. Suggest having the chef visit Monkey Pod or Minal Fish house at Four Seasons to see how they keep the quality up - both are very busy and well liked.
Lovely location at Ko Olina Golf Club, but difficult to find as signage is very “discrete”.
Our experience lived up to Roy’s reputation, and the service and food were outstanding. Our server was exceptionally knowledgeable and explained the menu thoroughly. He was patient in answering our questions and suggested an entree that was terrific.
Bring your piggy bank, as you will send some $$$ here. Worth it for a special occasion but comparable quality can be found for more reasonable prices elsewhere.
Roy’s is great, it just isn’t perfect. The service was good at some points; when a drink was spilled at our table the staff was quick to swoop in to make sure everything was taken care of. But they weren’t as quick to take our order; my whole group discussed the food at length and still were sitting around wondering when they were going to show up. The wine pairing for my entree was slow coming out as well, so I had to wait patiently with my wonderful looking food sitting in front of me instead of dig right in. Nothing that was a huge deal, but it did stop me from giving perfect scores across the board.
The pre fixe menu was delicious with the wine pairings, even though it seemed a bit stingy with only 3 courses. The salmon was cooked beautifully but the namasu and bok choy were unremarkable, even lackluster. I should want to clear my plate, not wave it away without care! My group unanimously decided that the macadamia tart was the favorite for dessert. But really you can’t go wrong, the desserts were all delicious. We ate every bite of all 4 hot desserts.
The food was great, but for the price, I’m not sure many would find it worth it. Really, for about $75-$100 a person, you expect the service to be absolutely on point and every bite to blow your mind. And this wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t mind-blowing.
We really enjoy dinners at Roy's Koolina. The menu is diverse & service is wonderful. We look forward to dining there again. The hardest part is choosing our entrees. My mom really likes the braised short rib & I like their ribeye steak. Our favorite starter is the boursin stuffed beet salad. Scott is a great server & we'll definitely request him again.
This restaurant has high ratings, so we were excited to try it. We were disappointed. The appetizer trio was mediocre, and the fish, which I was so excited for, the Mahi Mahi was flavored with BACON pieces. I don’t consider myself a foodie, but even I know that using bacon is a cheap shortcut to flavor anything. My husband had the filet, which came with a sauce on top and yes, more bacon. In my humble opinion, if you have to put sauce on your steak, then it’s either not a good cut of meat, or it was cooked incorrectly. The only redeeming food was the dessert, which was the chocolate soufflé, which was amazing. The ambiance was very nice (outdoor with a lovely guitarist), but I wouldn’t recommend Roys to anyone.
Environment was like an old country club restaurant, 1990’s. Tables are like benches. For a Roy’s restaurant, service was not up to par. Needs new managent, make over, and bring it to the new millennium. The chef was great but the interior design is outdated.
