LOVE this place!!! Food is fantastic and always have great service!
The service was very nice and attentive but it took close to an hour for our entrees to be served and we were the only table. No update was given as to why. Food was excellent as usual but the delay in receiving entrees was disappointing
Our first visit was great! We enjoyed our meal very much. The homemade bread is divine! The homemade ginger salad dressing was delicious. My blackened sea bass and my husband's burger were so flavorful with unique vegetable pairings. So glad we ordered the Derby Pie, too! The owner ventured out from the kitchen to greet many patrons. We will be back!
You will always have a wonderful. Meal here. The music is soft so you can still have conversation. Recipes are unique. The owners will come out later in the evening to greet you and ask how you liked things. Folks who live on the outskirts of town and don't consider these urban dining gems are missing out. FAN-tastic food here.
Service was very prompt, friendly, and attentive by not only our immediate server but by multiple folks on the team. They displayed a real interest in the food and in being friendly and helpful. Always a big plus.
Food is very well done. Appetizers, entrée choices, and desserts all are interesting and well prepared. The lima bean patty appetizer and fish taco appetizers were both outstanding. We were in on a Wednesday night which happened to be Half-price wine bottles (normally under$30) at least that night. Wine list was very adequate and fairly priced, as was the food. Really a neighborhood gem that deserves a fuller house. Terrific. We'll be back!
Delightful experience. Little disappointed that, for whatever reason, dining points were not earned at this establishment.
Great food and service. It was our anniversary, and we had a romantic evening.
One of Richmond's great "hidden gems". Bruce and Virginia Rowland are masters of taste and favor.
The food was amazing. It was a little loud and the lighting was a little low for my taste. The service was good. But the flavor of the shrimp, bratwurst and grits was so good that it made up for any of the minor negatives that we experienced. Highly recommend.
wonderful meal great chef! bean cakes, calamari, flounder special
Always good.
Rowland is another Fan-neighborhood gem! Chef/owner Bruce was working the kitchen, bar, and greeting guests. You could tell he wanted your visit to be enjoyable. The food was amazing! We got a wide variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts and all were delicious.
We have definitely added this to our list of places we will go back to....often!
I've lived in the Fan for 20 years, but somehow had never been to Rowland. That was my loss because everything about it was wonderful. The food was as good as I've had anywhere in Richmond, and it was very creative. Terrific service and great atmosphere.
I'll be back again soon!
I will preface by saying this was the only restaurant i could find that had available seating for Mother's Day brunch and waffles ( for my daughter) so even though this wasn't our first choice, we were looking forward to trying something new. The restaurant is very small and cozy. The waiter staff was very attentive and friendly. There was a limited menu for this brunch as they are not usually open on Sunday. I had the quiche and my daughter had the French toast, which were both very good. Although we had a good experience, I believe it could be better: My 2 comments are 1) when adding celery to the Bloody Mary, please don't use a celery with a bad piece cut out of it. A young stalk or pepperoni stick would have been better or a Bloody Mary bar even better! Its really a common sense issue unless that was the last celery stalk in the frig 2) when you use the words: Pommes Frites on the menu, a small plate of krinkle cut fries just doesn't cut it. A heaping cup of fries in a cone shape along with homemade dipping sauces comes to mind. Otherwise, side of fries is a side of fries, not Pommes Frites.
Very cozy place with a funky vibe. Great food - concise menu - but we had a group of 8 and everyone loved what they ordered
Mother’s Day dinner
Pathetic service. Nearly 40 minutes before my cocktail, a basic whiskey drink, appeared at the table. Too many choices to put up with that kind of service. No apology, even after I went to the bar to tell them I was still waiting. Won’t be going back.
Simple and elegant neighborhood restaurant. Cuisine is excellent. Service is good. Have been coming here for the last 5 years. Quality is consistent throughout. Highly recommended.
Stumbled onto it quite by accident and glad we did! Dinner was delicious (dined during Restaurant Week 2018). Service was a bit slow but that was not a big deal at all. The staff was working hard! Will definitely make our way back. Great experience.
My son and I have popped in here twice, kind of on the fly, and had a great meal both times. What we don’t understand (and this is NOT exclusive to Rowland’s) is why we routinely get shown to the lousiest tables in the room. My son dresses like a dandy, I’m a middle-aged lady who doesn’t look like a bystander from “Cops,” so what gives? Needless to say, I always ask for a better table.
Girlfriends and I chose this restaurant during Restaurant Week and it didn't disappoint. The selections were great and quality was superb. I will definitely go back.
We chose the restaurant for Restaurant Week. The food was good but the portions were very small in some cases. There were three thin strips of steak in the NY Strip meal (maybe 3 oz). Fish portion was more sizable. The staff was super attentive and nice for how busy they were however one server seemed extremely put off when we asked for more bread.
Good food Possibly shortly staffed however the bartender was our waiter maintained a pleasant disposition and was excited about the menu items.
Dinner for my husband's birthday was first rate. He had Norwegian salmon and I had Pork Carnita ravioli with a butternut squash light sauce. We also had the pea soup, which was incredible. This place never misses the mark, it is always great.
We had a fabulous dinner at Rowland. There were five of us and everyone’s entree was outstanding and service was great! It was a Monday evening so probably quieter than usual but that made it even more enjoyable. We’ll definitely be back.
The Joe Chop and the Rockfish are spectacular! The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and make all guests feel very welcome. Still one of Richmond's Bests!
Rowland Restaurant was a wonderful dining experience. The atmosphere was very welcoming and warm as the waitstaff greeted us and mentioned our special occasion, an anniversary. The menu was clear and easy to understand, with many delectable options. The fresh bread was so delicious with the garlic dipping oil. We ordered 2 starters which were a nice size to share! The dinners came with a lovely salad with homemade dressing and both entrees were delightfully delicious. Wes, our waiter provided prompt, but relaxing service; we never felt rushed. I will definitely be coming back to Rowland with family and friends in the future!
First time here and it exceeded our expectations. Small intimate restaurant full of what appeared to be a lot of repeat patrons. Owners came out of kitchen to talk to several tables.
Food was fantastic, my pork chop was the best I have ever had.
Highly recommend this restaurant
Still one of Richmond's best restaurants. Located in the "fan", Virginia and Bruce Rowland have been "putting out" great food for years. Bruce's signature dish, "Joe Chop" has been on the menu for years and it is there for a reason. It is really good!!!!
Rowland continues to be one of the best restaurants in Richmond....and these days that is no small feat! wonderful menu options, delicious nightly specials. Rowland offers a great dining experience and if you try it once, you WILL be back!
Very happy with the food and service. They did a great job.
I ordered the steak, and it was just ok, not great. My husband’s rockfish, however, was delicious. The bananas foster had no ice cream in it , only cream, which was disppointing since it was $10!!
Excelent food, service. Always everything is perfectly serve, savory and perfect.
Kudos to the Chefs.
Sadly, we were not happy with our last meal at Rowland. We have enjoyed it for years and always rave about it to others. Our meal on March 6 was not a good experience. There was only one server for the entire restaurant. This server was also the bartender. He was unfamiliar with much of the menu (bar items and food). He made a Cosmo that tasted terrible and he served it in a highball glass witha straw. When we asked about this, he said it can be served that way. Never have I seen it served like that nor have I tasted a cosmo that lacked any flavor. It was awful. He also could not tell us what bourbons were available. He brought each item on every single course to the wrong diner. It was so dark at our seat that I ended up eating my guest's fish entree and she ate mine- we could not see which entree had a curry sauce on it due to the lack of light. (The server told us he did not know how to turn the lights on in the back). The food tasted good but it was not enough to overcome TERRIBLE service. Sorry to say we will not recommend Rowland anymore nor will we return. It really was a favorite in the past but no more.
Quite a little gem in the neighborhood! It was Monday night
and very few diners but delicious cuisine, interesting menu
and lovely server, Madeline who was right on task. Definitely
would recommend.
Great food! Got the pork chop and sat at the bar..
Yummy and very friendly and attentive server. Pizza was very good.
Service was super slow- food was meh. Been there many times over the years. I have to say was really disappointed with this experience. Usually it’s been good, not this time.
Good food as always; but service on Saturday night very lacking. Took 45 minutes to get appetizers. Very noisy!
Food was good. Our only issue was we couldn't be seated until 45 minutes after our reserved time. The staff was very nice about it, was just a little off putting. The space is very small so I highly recommend reservations and be prepared to wait if it is a busy night. Some people may sit and chat too long delaying your table seating on time. NOT a good restaurant for vegetarians. Meat in basically every dish and a lot of pork as well. Fine with me, but my friend didnt eat port and her only option was the filet.
