My youngest birthday and she chose ROJ, just like her old man (me) does for his bday. The place was jumping with energy and it was packed. It was a great thing to see after the last 12 months or so we all went through.
The food is perfect as always, the shrimp with egg sauce is legendary. The steaks are high quality and the lobster my bride had was awesome. The service was very very slow, I just think they weren’t prepared for a full house and to be honest it didn’t bother me that much. Looking forward to returning soon.
The food was delicious and staff friendly! Felt safe with checking temperature, requiring mask, and people at the table. Made reservations for 4,
Shrimp Crown dinner is amazing! Yao is the best cook!
Great service, great food, & great price... Definitely will be making a return trip.
We chose Ron of Japan because we wanted an authentic Japanese teppanyaki experience. We were seated immediately and then (Strike 1) waited 20 minutes before a server came. My wife noticed after a while that the prep cook was continuously motioning to the servers that nobody had come to our table. After a server finally came and took our order our chef arrived. (Strike 2) he was not Japanese, he was not even Asian, so much for authenticity. (Strike 3). Our chef was robotic and lifeless, he did not engage with us at all, he didn’t do any knife acrobatics, no onion volcano, no egg tricks...there was absolutely no performance whatsoever and that was one of the main reasons that we came. He set fire to the food only once without any warning or fanfare so we couldn’t even take a photo and he never did it again. (Strike 4) the ventilation hood above our table, if it was working at all, barely caught any of the smoke, my wife and I commented that the smoke was going around it, as the entire room was full of smoke. Had the food not been EXCEPTIONALLY great I would have refused to pay. As it was I felt completely ripped off paying $200 + $30 tip. I’m not sure why anyone would return after that, I could have gotten the same experience had I ordered carry-out and avoided having my clothes smell like kitchen smoke. They should have cooked the food in the back and not bothered with the grill/table. It’s a shame too because I remember having wonderful meals years ago when this used to be one of the top teppanyaki places around. We will not be back.
Nice for special occasions and the food was tasty. Staff was nice and friendly.
My moms birthday. .. she enjoyed every second of it.
Food was terrible, the vents didn't work husband couldn't breathe! The "egg sauce" is not good and it's all they season the food with so food was not good at all! Total waste of money! And it was my daughter's birthday, all they did was bring out a pineapple top with sparklers on it... really not worth it!
The egg yolk topping is the BEST. Steak and seafood is top quality. Fun place!
Friends birthday we waited about an hour for a table but the drinks are good at the bar
Our server was terrible. The food was bland and expensive. The ambiance was cool, but the experience was disappointing.
Read negative reviews first before you go those people speak the truth there are much better places in the city
The waiter I believe his name was Sam was amazing and very helpful. Some of our party felt their drinks weren't made properly and wanted to change to something else. The manager seemed to be irritated with their request and kept trying to explain how it was made. Then she proceeded to wave her hand as if she was waving them off and something was said to her and they did get their drinks changed and another round to make up for the problem since we were there celebrating a birthday. The waiter we had was amazing and so helpful and kind.
First time eating here and they didn't disappoint.
Not worth price! Poor poor service! Waited hours for meal! Had to ask for the flame jus very poor service on Valentines Day no utensils had to wait and ask for everything at the prices I want to feel a upscale lux experience that was way way below a 5 star credit!
Great environment. Great food. Great staff. Both the waitress and the cook were happy and playful, as well as helpful. Our waitress was bilingual and our cook appeared to be trilingual - which is an awesome attribute to have with the mixture of cultures in the city. One of the knocks I do have was that we ordered medium rare fillet mignon and got well done, but that was minor. There was another party that was a bit loud throughout the dinner but these types of places are to be enjoyed so it was understandable. Also, they were really accommodating to children (2 in our party), and had a good attitude towards them.
So I’ve been to so many hibachi types of restaurants this place had no match to the others. I think this is a bland tasteless approach to hibachi “maybe” healthier. They use oil maybe olive oil to prepare the entire meal so NO butter or garlic butter or any seasoning whatsoever. Lack in flavor. I’m assuming the numbers have to come from the gold sauce and it’s like a gelatin gold lard sort of maybe like gold gelatin cold crisco that doesn’t melt I guess to explain. The food is grilled until it is burned so definitely over cooked. At $200 for two people I was extremely disappointed. They need a hibachi field trip to Hamada’s in Orland Park or Wu’s House or heck ChiTungs. Ron of Japan was crowded so you will be fooled.
It was my friends birthday, and the entire experience was amazing!! Our chef was great!
Love this place ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It was about 6 of us. You can’t sit until the entire party is present although 4 of us arrived together. Valet is $14. Food was decent . Portion sizes decent. Kinda overpriced for no real tricks . 1st and last time attending. I forgot my food and could not get back in as they were closed . Good for groups though.
This was my first time dinning at Ron of Japan, I have been wanting to come for awhile. We went for my boyfriend’s birthday. The service was ok, but the food was delicious.
Shogun dinner was excellent as usual. Tony who prepared our meal was excellent as usual. Love this place.
I was there for my daughters bday I was sat a booth in the corner and it was filthy to say the least. It was 3 children two adults and not worth the $400 bill. There was dust and dirt everywhere. For the prices to be this high they need to pay closer attention to details like this
Great experience overall.
Soup was great. I think it’s super overpriced for what you get.
The best experience as always. Segundo is one of the best, and Sam is a top notch manager! Thank you once again for another memorable evening. We love you! 🦞 🍤 🔥
Been dining here for the last 30+ years and never disappoints. They’re taking Covid-19 seriously by temp checks upon walking in, reduced table attendance etc. Great experience to get out of the house and have a nice dinner SAFELY! ❤️
Love this place, I have being coming for years, service is always great
If you visit downtown Chicago this is a must try! I love everything about it
We had never been to Chicago or Ron of Japan. This was a very pleasant and enjoyable mealtime. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious. We were a party of 6 and everyone really enjoyed their meal and we can’t wait to go back in the future!
Best in the city
Graduation
Best food every time!!
Love the place! Sam always makes our visits special, great manager! Thanks for the Special Shrimp App and Edamame!
Food was awesome. Service was great but Very smoky fan notworking properly.
ALWAYS A GREAT TIME THERE. AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE. CANT WAIT TO GO AGAIN.
Great place, ask for Segundo as chef. He is amazing. He's been there for 35 years. Nice guy. Been going there for 30 years.
Enjoyed as always
The beef fried rice was disgusting. Everything else was decent that we ate. Server seemed in a hurry, even though we were there for an early dinner and 1 of 3 tables in the whole place. Our chef was fun and pleasant.
In general overpriced for lousy service and average food.
They have a nice atmosphere, the food is so fresh, and they give a generous portion.
