Set in the heart of downtown, across from the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, the “new” Essex will continue to offer the progressive, modern, approachable cuisine that has made it a top restaurant in the region. Whether it’s a pre-theater dinner, a casual gathering with friends, or a tasting menu for a special evening, guests can gather at The Essex to create memories with family and friends while enjoying excellent cuisine.

The Essex menu showcases modern American cuisine that draws inspiration from the land, sea and deep heritage of the Connecticut River Valley, using the freshest locally sourced products available from farm and sea. The tasting menu was a wonderful, elegant culinary journey. We enjoyed sitting at the counter and observing the talented kitchen crew at the height of service. Had a chance to chat with Colt, the chef and owner. All in all a memorable and delicious experience.

We enjoyed our anniversary dinner. The food was exquisite, the service impeccable and the ambiance was friendly. The chef came over to our table and chatted for a while. It was a great dinner.

Consistently exceptional and inventive cuisine. Don't miss the lobster bisque en croute if offered - the best I have ever had. Every course is a culinary sensation of true amazement and delight. A must stop for all Foodies.

The food at The Essex was out of this world! Hands down the best lobster bisque we've ever had—rich, flavorful, and unforgettable. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection, and that sauce... absolutely to die for! And don’t even get me started on the rhubarb and hibiscus tea—so unique and refreshing. Huge thank you to the Chef for taking the time to talk with us—you’re amazing! This place is a true gem.

Each individual dish was unique and beautifully presented. The portions are appropriate with no leftovers. Salad we ate with our hands and basque cheesecake were particularly memorable.

They were amazingly attentive, friendly, and helpful. We did the tasting menu and every item was awesome. The drinks were also great and the head chef even came over to check on us. Truly 5-star experience.
