Contemporary American
Entering its third decade, the Dakota has long been a favorite of jazz legends as well as patrons who savor the best of both art forms, the virtuosity of kitchen and bandstand. You can eat in the dining room and enjoy music second-hand from the adjacent club room; but you can also enjoy the music in the intimate club while making selections from either the bar or dining room menu—the best of both worlds. Patrons must note that online reservations through OpenTable apply to the dining room only. For show information and club reservations please call.

It was our Anniversary and we had a great night of Louis Armstrong music with the Southside Aces, a very talented, noteworthy band! We've been here before and the music is #1, so don't plan on eating big meals. Small plates are the way to go. But I highly recommend the Dakota to anyone looking for some fabulous music in a romantic, cool atmosphere.

One suggestion, the red beans and rice dish was not cooked completely. As a southerner, beans should be soft, but firm, beans were hard. Also, you may want to study how this dish is prepared in New Orleans, beans are in a bowl, a scup of rice on the center on top. Wings were great, and 99.9% of the time, I enjoy your food. Respectfully and best regards.

The whole staff, especially the wait staff, are so knowledgable, courteous, and quiet when they need to be (when the music is being played, sung, etc). I go there so many times because of these outstanding amenities. They have a quiet way to let them know when you need another beverage or some other service. I have friends that see me all dressed up and ask "On your way to the Dakota?" and don't bother to wait for the answer as they know. When I come home, I think I smile the whole time just remembering how lucky I am to have a special place to spend an evening. For those ladies who do not think they should go out alone, get over it. I prefer to be alone so my time is spent enjoying what I came for: good music, good food, good service.

The service was horrible and the waitress was not professional. I had to wait 15 minutes before I could order a drink. She was not attentive. The risotto was not cooked and it wasn’t that good. I ordered an appetizer and they completely forgot. This is not a restaurant when you have to pay cover charge maybe separate the two business not everyone have money to pay for a cover when they only going to eat and check it out.

It was a terrible experience the hostess was rude and didn’t explain that we were not going to be seeing the show and we were literally seated in a storage area where they were piling chairs while we ate. The waiter literally tossed my wife’s plate on the table. We shocked and left as quickly as we could.

Had friends in from out of town and wanted a restaurant that combined good food with entertainment. Chose the Dakota. Food was excellent, not the same boring supper club choices, and entertainment was the best. Server helpful, drinks were great, just could not say enough good about our evening.

The music was great. But the food left a lot to be desired. We ordered 4 different entrees, and only liked the hamburger and fries. And even then, we ordered mushrooms with our hamburger at an additional cost and received two! We each paid twenty dollar cover charge, and two of us had obstructed view of the pianist. I may be back for the music, but not for the food.

The food was just ok - nothing special. The service was beyond bad. We waited over 20 minutes to order a bottle of wine, another 20 minutes for it to arrive. Our food actually came out before the wine did. The salt and pepper we asked for never came and we finally got it from another waiter. Our wait assistant was the saving grace, shimming the table, checking on water, delivering the wine (finally) and finding the waitress twice. For us, Connie Evingson and Sam Miltich were the draw and they did not disappoint. I'd come back again to hear them in spite of the bad service.

Excellent wait staff/service: attentive, knowledgeable, friendly Good food: nice variety, our brussel sprouts and risotto, altho' tasty, were undercooked Music: live, entertaining Manager: rude We hadn't been to Dakota for a while and thought we'd have dinner there before a Symphony Hall event. When we arrived, we were unaware that a Django Festival was occurring; we were seated in a separate room from the music which we had all to ourselves ; ) We enjoyed cocktails, an appetizer, entrees and a bottle of wine with the help of our very attentive wait staff. We could even enjoy the live music coming from the main room on the other side of the wall. So far, a delightful and romantic evening ... When it was time for us to gather to leave, we stood up by the doorway to the main room to get our waitress' attention. A very rude, abrupt man stepped in front of us and essentially demanded, 'I told you you were a la carte. You didn't pay for the music. Return to your seats!' We didn't know who he was nor had we seen or spoken with him during our meal. Upon our prompting, he identified himself as the manager. When we tried to explain that we were waiting for our coffees and bill, he continued to try to belittle us as if we were lying and trying to sneak in some free music. Fortunately our waitress appeared with our cappuccinos and nearly $200 bill. As we returned to our seats to enjoy our coffees and pay our bill, he stood at the doorway and simply glared at us ~ we felt as if we were being guarded in a prison. We will likely return to the Dakota in the future, but it will be awhile. If only the manager had been more observant as to what was occurring and had customer service as a priority, then everyone's evening would have been more delightful and we would gladly rate the Dakota higher. BTW, our evening at Symphony Hall was stupendous - such great talent our cities have: world-renowned symphony and Dessa and her outstanding band!

The show was outstanding. I had the Trout from the menu and that dish had unique flavours which I had not experienced before and that I really enjoyed. I chose the pot beans as a side, which were delicious, however did not accompany the trout well, so should have chosen a different side. Service was excellent and the waitress was very considerate of the ongoing show. I had a lovely evening overall.

This was my first time at the Dakota, and I was very impressed. Everything seemed excellent--the service, the food, the music. I wish I'd made a point to travel to the Twin Cities sooner to enjoy this gem. Now that I have, I'll definitely return. Our time at the Dakota was a wonderful way to relax after taking in the Twins game.

Overall, this was exactly what I'd imagined and hoped for with celebrating my birthday. The music was great, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect. However, on our way out, we were unsure of the payment method, and were led to believe we paid at the front. My friends and I decided to leave a tip on the table, and pay separately at the front. When the server noticed we didn't put a tip on our credit card slips, he confronted us about it. We explained we'd left it on the table, and he was pleased, but it left us with an unsettled feeling, and almost wishing we hadn't. Despite the enjoyment of the night overall, ending on this made us question if it's a place we would want to return to.
