Centrally located in historic downtown Charleston, Husk transforms the essence of Southern cuisine. Led by Executive Chef Ray England, the kitchen reinterprets the bounty of the surrounding area, exploring an ingredient-driven cuisine that begins in the rediscovery of heirloom products and redefines what it means to cook and eat in the Lowcountry. At Husk, there are some rules about what can go on the plate – if it doesn’t come from the South, it’s not coming through the door. Much like the décor that inhabits this historic Victorian-era home, the food is modern in style and interpretation. The restaurant is as casual as it is chic, evoking a way of life centered on seasonality and the grand traditions of Charleston life. It is a neighborhood gathering place for friends, and a destination dining spot for travelers seeking an award-winning taste of the South.

The vegetarian options were very limited and not great. They were not able to accommodate any substitutions for allergies, which I would expect for such a nice restaurant and did not appreciate. The service was very slow. Our reservation was for 6:30 and the food wasn’t served until 8 pm. Food was okay, but not great. I would expect more for the price and for the reputation of this restaurant.

We had been so looking forward to a wonderful experience. The food was ok. A few items were very good and most were just ok. It was a very expensive meal which would have been ok if all the food was really good. Unfortunately it did not live up to the press and reputation it has . We won’t be choosing to spend that much money on a dining experience at Husk again. There are better options for fine dining at that price point.

My husband and I first ate at Husk 8 years ago. That first meal was so good that we scrapped the rest of our reservations for the week and went back to Husk two more times to eat. I was excited to bring my son and my parents here for my son’s birthday this week. Had a completely different experience this time. We were seated upstairs. It was STIFLING hot upstairs. By the time the food came out I was sweating. I realize that it’s August in Charleston, but the heat inside was just unbearable. It was so warm that our water was room temperature. I knew that my Mom was going to be challenged by the menu, because it’s not really her thing, but we decided that the Pimento Cheese would be safe, because she likes Pimento Cheese. There was mention of a Chile Crisp. We didn’t know what that was or what it meant, but I figured that it would be a small garnish. The Pimento Cheese came out and they had formed a “well” in the scoop of cheese and inside of the well was a ladleful of a garlic Chile oil, with Chile flakes scattered on the cheese. Highly unusual way to serve Pimento Cheese. My Mom declared it inedible, because of the heat from the Chili. I ordered the Ink Rigatoni with Crab. There was so much Cayenne pepper in my dish that I couldn’t even taste anything else. It was just a spicy pasta. My Dad’s Snapper looked really good. He liked the charred corn that came with it. My son ordered the Steak with the onion suboise. Everything on his plate was delicious and he ate every bite. My Mom expressed her dislike of her Pimento Cheese and the manager did come over after we had the check and asked if she could get her something else, but we were just ready to leave at that point. I felt sheepish afterwards for raving about how good Husk was and how it was a MUST for our trip. I was really hoping for a different experience than what we had. Maybe the AC broke recently. Maybe it was an off night. Definitely not the same place anymore.

The food was outstanding. The wine list is overly focused on unconventional, unpleasant and overpriced wine. And the restaurant doesn't appear to be airconditioned -it was swelteringly hot.

Arrived on time. They gave us a table in the upper floor and there was poor AC. We asked to move to another table. It took about 15 minutes to do that. We ordered our food. We asked for a vegetarian plate for my daughter and they offered sauteed vegetables. We mentioned to the waiter that we didn’t want spicy hot food as it was our first time there and didn’t really know the dishes. The food took another half hour. An hour after we arrived came the food. My chicken was raw .The vegetables were mini little cups of separate coleslaw, rice, and aubergine. Not sautéed vegetables as said. My son’s pasta was full of chili peppers, he couldn’t eat it. We commented on the long wait and the raw chicken but the manager was absolutely annoyed and said that their chicken is a different kind and that bloody is fine not raw….and about the spicy hot pasta she said she was a pepper lover so she wouldn’t know. Never will return. Great on line marketing took us there, bad food spooked us out. Wrong attitude from the employees. They didn’t charge for the chicken and the pasta.

We had reservations so were seated within 10 minutes. Our waitress was mediocre. Didn’t provide a welcoming feel as it is felt in this southern charm town. We had to ask or better yet pull teeth to ask about the choices on the menu. The food was tasty but nothing spectacular. It was over priced waffles and chicken. Don’t get what the hype of this place was but I recommend you go someplace else. Didn’t even have a good vibe.

Had 10:15 reservation, we were sat promptly but waited about 10 minutes to be greeted. Our server seemed to be more focused on his other table. A 4 top. Food was good but I would not recommend husk or be back. I still left a 20% tip although I don’t think Rob deserved it, but I have been in the restaurant industry and know how hard it is since Covid and will give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he was just having an off day!

We had a wonderful time seated on the upstairs balcony, which made for an amazing vibe. We had nearly all of the small plates on the menu. The scallop crudo was ridiculous. The corn bread was some of the best we’ve had. The ham plate was sooo worth it. Drinks were really tasty and the service staff were very attentive.

The food was fantastic. Service was fine, but with the labor shortage you have to be a bit more patient. Catfish was Amazing. Not overly fried, which can ruin the flavor and texture. Scallop crudo was excellent. The cornbread is something I could eat every day.

We fell for the Husk hype. I read reviews here and there that patrons were disappointed with their experience at Husk but overall the reviews were positive so we gave it a shot. I gave three stars because while the service was amazing, the food didn’t fit the price tag or experience we were hoping for. We were impressed with the tuna crudo; it was our favorite appetizer. Benton’s country ham is a yummy and safe choice as well, but since there isn’t much thought or creativity involved in putting this appetizer together, I couldn’t brag on it too much. Husband ordered the catfish. Again, food was tasty, but not worth the price tag. I ordered the half chicken, which was another safe dish but I assumed it would be amazing, considering it’s hard to mess a chicken up. The skin was good but the breast was dry and I had a 3 inch piece of the string used to tie the chicken up while roasting that I ending up chewing on because it wasn’t removed from my chicken. We also ordered the summer squash side and it was just ok. The cornbread was good but my mother in law’s would’ve put it to shame in a contest. Overall, I was disappointed and it’s my own fault for getting super pumped and thinking it may still be similar to when it was under Sean Brock’s management. Instead of Husk, check out Wild Common, The Obstinate Daughter and FIG.

We (6 of us) were seated upstairs at the time of our reservation. It took a while before the waitress came over to take drink orders. There's a nice selection of cocktails, beer and wine. We ordered several appetizers to share and those were delicious. Our entrees were equally delicious - all made with local ingredients. My husband ordered an ink rigatoni which was really really really spicy (and he does not like spicy food) so we felt like the waitress should have warned us as there was nothing in the description to suggest it would be a spicy meal. We ordered 3 of the 4 available desserts and they were all delicious. We always try to book a meal here when we stay in Charleston.

We were so excited for this restaurant as it is hyped up and everyone says how amazing Husk is. Our waitress was amazing so no qualms about service. But the decor and setting was nothing short of boring, and the food was okay/good. Nothing amazing, nothing great, nothing to write home about and definitely not worth the price that was charged. When in Charleston we are at 8 different restaurants of all types, and 7/8 were jaw dropping, Husk was a place I went to once time in Charleston.

The atmosphere wasn’t very “special”. I expected more from a restaurant that you have to book months in advance. Didn’t have as much character as many other great restaurants in the city.

Incredible service, food, and drinks. Husk lives up to the hype, with a small farm fresh menu. We both had fish and was the best. Pimento Cheese appetizer was amazing. Two desserts - peach beignets & ice cream sundae that was no ordinary ice cream dessert. Make a reservation if you are in Charleston, should be on your "bucket list" - a fabulous meal.
