Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

We are happy to arrange for special events or private parties in any of our three rooms at the Hayes Street Grill. The largest dining area can host parties up to 75 seated and 90 standing; the bar room can host 35 seated and 50 standing; lastly, our private alcove can host 25 seated and 30 standing.

Wow, I'm a long-time fan of this restaurant, but I have not been here in ages. BIG disappointment in the food. My shrimp salad was a mushy lump of formerly-frozen shrimp dumped on top of a sad, soggy pile of chopped iceberg lettuce with a few hidden beans, an under-cooked boiled egg and bland green goddess dressing. I tried first pepper and then resorted to salt, but it was no use. This meal was a disaster. Such a shame. The service was still lightening fast (tailored for the theater crowd headed to a show) and thoroughly professional. Absolutely no complaints about the service, but I feel for those waiters having to serve that slop. The ambiance is the same as always, charmingly classic French bistro with celebrity photos on the wall. I just love the place, but it could use a little refresh and the food! Oh, god, fix the food.

It is so valuable to have a nice restaurant to rely on for pre-performance meals. We were taken care of well, the menu was appealing, and we enjoyed our food. We both had the Petrale sole, which was with an interesting preparation of mushrooms.

Perfect spot for pre-Opera dining. I can’t believe this was our first time dining here! We will definitely return for another pre-performance dinner. Reasonable prices and excellent service. The host was charming and helpful. Cocktails were wonderful.

Hadn't been to Hayes Street Grill since the pandemic. Very glad to see that it has upheld its highstandard as a pre-performance must eat there.

Great time. Reservations was ready for us. Food was superb. Service was excellent. Warm, convivial atmosphere. Will return again.

The food is very basic and bland. Had swordfish and the steak. Steak was tough and no flavor. We share an overdressed Cesar Salad. Which the waiter brought and told me he was giving me “the honor” of splitting it for us. Pretty Lazy! We tried a creme brulee. It was freezing cold and the top was actually burnt. We sent it back and did not want to try another one as suggested. All in all a boring over priced meal.
