State of Grace is a coastal, South Texas neighborhood restaurant in the refurbished Lamar-River Oaks Shopping Center. Elegant but casual, its elevated comfort food by executive chef Bobby Matos is executed at the highest level in a welcoming, beautiful space. The jubilant medley of old favorites played with new spice, accent, and freshness lends itself to southern, American, Latin, Gulf Coast, German and Asian influences. Chef-owner Ford Fry’s first venture outside of Atlanta, State of Grace is located in the neighborhood where Ford grew up and nods to his childhood memories fused with Houston’s evolution into a melting pot of cultures and cuisines.

Came here for dinner a month ago and had a delightful meal and an amazing server. Came back and unfortunately did not have a good experience. The restaurant was dead and we had to ask someone to get our server every time. Wine was warm, food itself was ok. Sides were left with no serving spoons. Had to ask for water refills. Overall felt like we were left to fend for ourselves.

We arrived a little early for our reservation but that wasn't an issue. We were greeted and seated instantly. The service was top notch and the food was amazing. The staff were very helpful in giving us recommendations and answering any questions we had. Will absolutely be back again.

Found this as we were staying at a nearby motel. Everything was fantastic! Teh food was perfect and. the service better. The fries were truly unique and we agreed they were the best fries we had ever eaten. Will be going back next time in Houston and already shared with friends who live there.

At first they gave us the wrong table. I provided specific requirements, so they moved us to the main dining which was quiet and pleasant.

Nice to be greeted right away and know that they knew that we were celebrating out anniversary. The serve was friendly, and very knowledgeable of the menu. Every person that approached our table were very friendly. The restaurant was a little louder than I expected, and made conversation tough. But overall it was very nice. First off, the loaf of bread that came to our table was beautiful. But way over done (almost burnt on the bottom)...it was a crouton on the outside and soft in the inside. I asked for another since this one was too hard to eat. The waiter looked for a "lighter browned" loaf, it was much better. We loved the Hamachi Crudo as well as the Endive & Peaches. But the most anticipated part of the meal was such a disappointment. The Bone-in New York Strip was so bland. I don't think they put any salt and pepper on it. It had a smokey flavor but no other seasoning was detected. The Wild Mushroom side was also disappointing. We love mushrooms, but these were a texture nightmare. Some were so over cooked while others were under cooked. The SOG Eggplant side was delicious. All in all I am not sure I would go back. Too many good restaurants in Houston at a much lower price point.

Let me start by saying the manager and server were amazing! I think we just picked the wrong day to celebrate Fathers Day for a couple without small kids. The 2 stars is solely reflective of the food and unbearable crying/screaming kids right next to us. Rather than giving a horrible written review detailing everything that happened I’ll give SoG a pass and hope our experience was a one off. I will go back because everyone was so apologetic and kind without us even raising a fuss. And I believe in second chances. However, I do think the chef should be given some consequence for sending food out that diminishes the reputation of the establishment. Just do better next time.
