Our server was great (personable and professional). The food was excellent (however, the kitchen was inexplicably slow considering it was still early on a Friday and not busy)

Sushi and beet salad were delicious. Scallops and pork belly were also very good but the corn side was VERY sweet.

Food was better than average but nothing amazing. Guacamole was very good but they literally gave us 5 chips to go with it. Why? Then make us ask for more. Despite ordering their quick lunch, it was anything but and I had to grab a water pitcher from the bar to refill our own waters. The lunch came with a to go coffee but we had to remind the waiter and then this took another 10 minutes. It was fine but try something else unless you must have something in this vicinity.

Great decor and vibe for the area that desperately needs a little cultural flair however the food could have used some TLC. The empanadas are fried too hard leaving a dry shell - my recommendation to the chef is consider baking instead to balance out the richness of the filling. The Cubano was unfortunately a disappointment, day(s) old bread completely dried out while pressed paired with what also seemed to be pork a day or two old came out luke warm, and lack of depth and desperately needed moisture. However, the swordfish dip and the Cachapas are very well executed. I would say a few tweaks in the prep kitchen should resolve most of these issues. Lots of potential here.

They are understaffed. We booked the private dining room for a gathering of 12 people. The bottomless brunch selection felt a bit limited, especially in items that were "for the table" because our party did not particularly want the beef skewer, which was tough in the first round and better cooked next round. The huevos rancheros sauce was a bit too sour. However, the chicken and waffles was excellent, and had a nice spicy sauce with it. The churros were good however, the banana croissant sandwich was confusing and unsatisfying. I could not understand whether it was trying to be a paris brest, cannoli, or a japanese fruit cream sandwich. Drinks were okay. The mango mocktail was great. The bottomless bubbles left much to be desired. One member of our party ordered a hugo spritz but was delivered a champagne cocktail. Additionally, the glasses and accoutrement were inconsistent. However the bellini was good and used passionfruit instead of peach.

We are at Toro twice while staying at the Fairmont - Chicago. Our first experience was waiting between 3:00 - 3:30 while they were switching from lunch to happy hour. We sat at the bar at were able to order a drink but nothing else until 3:30. We just wanted a snack and were even unable to get something as simple as chips/guac/salsa. Meanwhile the bar seating filled up and everyone was waiting for the same thing…just to order a light bite. The bartender was slammed when it hit 3:30 and was unable to keep up with the rush. Several people left. Finally we received our good. It was fine, but nothing to get excited about. We also received about 6 chips with our guac and had to ask for more…:which obviously took a while. Do better, Toro! Our other experience was for a family brunch at 10:00 am. We reserved in advance yet they still had to prepare our table and we were sat well after 10:00. Service was slow. Again, food was “ok” but nothing to get excited about. Sadly, we will not return to a Richard Sandoval restaurant.
