Northwest
Paley’s Place offers Pacific Northwest Bistro Fare using local & sustainable seasonal products, served in the warm and inviting setting of a Victorian home. As the 2005 winner of the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef Northwest and 2011 victor on Food Network’s popular series Iron Chef America, Vitaly Paley creates seasonal menus from the bounty of the Northwest – fresh ingredients supplied by local farmers, growers and purveyors – with French and Russian influences. Co-owner Kimberly Paley oversees the front of the house, and together with General Manager Stevie Walsh, curates the list of wines featuring an extensive selection of Oregon Pinot Noir. The weekly “Wine Wednesday” tasting takes a more global approach to wine tasting with wine flights available from around the world.

Still a great place, some nice changes since our last visit 8ish years ago. Wonderful that you can order a smaller or larger entree - just order one, do some sharing, or if you are super hungry have two smalls! They do need more vegetarian options, and more interesting ones at that - with their talent and global inspiration it would not be very hard. Fabulous service in general - though ask your server more questions about your final choices in your order and how they go together. (My soup and entree were both pale, creamy, and tiny.) Fabulous service in general. Very expensive but worth it for special bday.

We love almost everything about our seating and table for New Years Eve. The server was excellent and the food was exceptional. We have oyster on half shell, great cocktails and salmon and the Japanese Wagyu beef entree. Desert was fantastic also. Our only issue is the table, not having linen cover (which does approve our sensibility for laundry and environment) lacks side cozies or side plates to place small items. Need to come up with a finer table set that equals the quality of the meal and service instead of settings on just the laminate tables.

When sitting a single person and the rooms are mostly empty (and not filled for the time I was there) ... don't sit the person in the middle of the room or by the kitchen. There were other options in the main dining area!

We celebrated our 40th Anniversary and couldn't have been more pleased. The living room/french bistro dining room is warm and intimate. Everything was exceptional. I especially enjoyed the steak with braised short ribs, while my wife had the salmon. From the oyster appetizer to the creme brûlée, we enjoyed every morsel.

If you visit Portland you MUST go to this cultural gem. Chef Paley is creative and always showing why his passion creates success. The staff is exceptional to say the least. The mixologist makes sitting at the bar and eating my favorite place to eat there. She is accomplished at her art to say the least.

Great food, excellent service & waitstaff & nice ambiance (except for the people who had a whining baby and did little to keep it quiet). We shared a salad, Ken’s artisan bread while sipping the bottle of sparkling wine we brought with us. We both had the Coho salmon which was delicious! Then ended the evening with the creme brûlée with the last of the bubbly. Only problem was trying to use the OpenTable’s rewards of my phone. The manager said they never accept nor do they participate in their Rewards Program, so not sure what they were talking about. Used the OpenTable app to make the reservations. OpenTable did resolve the issue with me and said they would talk to the manager too, but not sure if it will solve the problem.

We had a great dinner here. I had never been despite 26 years here, and enjoyed the experience. Sevice and food was fabulous and I was inspired by some of the ingredients and flavors to influence my own cooking. Corkage at $25 was higher than I expected, but the wine list had some reasonable choices as an alternative. Desserts were a standout

We had such an amazing date night at Paley's Place. The staff was very accommodating from the moment we walked in the door. We were seated promptly and our coats were taken and hung. Every dish we indulged in was more than worth the price. Some of the standout dishes were the Escargot Bordelaise and the Sweet Potato Ushki. This is definitely the place to go to if you are looking for the complete dining experience. I'm already looking forward to the next time we return.

A small gem serving some of the most nuanced food we’ve ever had. No overpowering “celebrity” ingredients and no boring under seasoned food either. Every dish was spot on. Sauces were perfect, every dish was expertly prepared and service was attentive but not smothering. Worth the price in every respect.

Outstanding service, including the reception on our arrival. Not an extensive menu, just timely, creative, and extraordinarily successful. We thought we needed to add a person to our party (on a Saturdy evening!). The person I spoke with bent over backwards to accommodate us, and when the "request" became unnecessary, instead of returning us to our original reservation, she put us at a table where conversation would be easier than the original reservation. The menu was a treat including escargots as we have never before experienced and sweetbreads that will bring my wife and me back as soon as our travels allow. Paley's is a treasure!

Get the tasting menu. It's worth it. You need to let go of some control. Enjoy the surprises. Just tell them what you don't eat and trust them to serve you a fabulous meal. If you drink wine, the pairings are worth it too. I tasted wonderful wines from grapes I had never heard of before and wouldn't have ordered on my own. My main criticism: The tasting menu is woefully unexplained on the menu, and our server—though wonderful in many regards—missed an important detail: Everyone at your table needs to go in on the tasting menu if you're going to do it at all. (We didn't know that when ordering and ended up putting my dad in an awkward position.) Also know this: Not everyone gets the same thing! Within a certain course structure it is rather free form. It works, it's fun! If you don't love what's in front of you, hey, you can trade with your dining partners! (I swapped salads with my dad to reward him for going along.) Regarding noise: I like the space. I liked where we were originally seated, but it ended up being a weird acoustical vortex. We asked to move to a different table, and that was easily done and much better. They might want to put more soft things on the walls. Also, I'm glad I got the 7 course menu instead of the 5. The difference is +dumpling course +cheese course. The mushroom dumplings were omg incredible—an all time favorite dish.

Paley's was always the standard for us in Portland. We would always compare everywhere else to Paley's. With this last visit, we were underwhelmed by both the service and food. I would pick Meriwether's over Paley's now for service, food and ambiance.

I went with a friend for a birthday dinner, and we had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings (there is also a 7 course option). We made it known that my friend was allergic to tree nuts, but I was not. We ended up getting two different sets of courses with perfect wine pairings for each, which was outstanding as I got to try everything. Every offering was beautifully plated and so delicious. The service was also incredible - timely, but not rushed. Never had to sit with an empty glass or plate for more than a moment. Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Portland.
