Bar Primi is a corner pasta shop devoted to ‘primi piatti,’ the pasta course. What began as an idea for a small space in New York's East Village has since become an essential in chef and co-owner Andrew Carmellini's range: fresh pasta traditionally prepared and cooked to order. At Bar Primi, the main course is Primi Piatti. We use a variety of non-GMO semolina and specialty ‘00’ flours, organic eggs and handed-down techniques to create our menu of Traditional and Seasonal pasta dishes. We make more than a dozen different shapes and styles daily. This includes lumache and rigatoni from our imported extruder or ravioli and mezzalune cut and filled by hand. Family recipes and secrets are traded between Carmellini and Brooklyn-born chef-partner Salvatore Lamboglia who also offers a daily meat or seafood special in addition to a selection of shareable Piccolini and Antipasti, artisanal cheese, salumi and simple home-style desserts.

After taking our order the server essentially ignored us the rest of the evening. It was busy but not that busy. Couldn’t get drinks for nearly an hour. Took about 45 minutes between courses. Just awful service. 30 years of dining out In Manhattan and this is hands down the worse. No apologies offered by server or management. Food was good, but will never go back.

Wow! My experience with Bar Primi was incredible! It was my first time there & I was blown away by not only the food but the quality of service! Our server Tommy was great- so professional, attentive, yet down to earth. I’ve been to many restaurants & everything here was impeccable from start to finish. The hostess was warm, welcoming, sociable & accomadated our seating request without hesitation. The food was flavorful & uplifting. The mocktails were the best I’ve ever had! Fresh fruit garnishes… I could go on & on! If you’re someone who notices the small details, there is nothing done without purpose in this place! We will be back & referring other people, definitely! Bar Primi is a MUST!!

The only issue we had was the wait time. Our reservation was at 7:45pm, we showed up 7:42pm and we got our table almost at 8:00pm. Other than that the service was great, the food delicious.

We are a couple in their late 30s on a weekend getaway from Boston. We are no strangers to Italian food and the fine dining experience. The positives about Bar Primi: good vibes and energy when you walk in, lighting was not too bright not too dark, service with Rebecca was wonderful. We were unsure of which wine to choose and she made great recommendations based off of hearing our taste preferences. Everyone from the hostess to the waiter who filled our water was so warm and friendly!! The challenges: we found the food to be one note. For a place at this price point, we expected a bit more. We ordered the beets, stuffed meatballs, and rice balls for starters and then the agnolotti and vodka sauce and squid ink campanelle with crab for our entrees. Best dish out of all of those was the stuffed meatballs, soft food amount of sauce and tasty. The rice balls were “ok” and the beets were not elevated. The beets just tasted like beets with garnish on top. Wish we had more fat or acid to give it some depth. Our pastas were too Al dente for our liking. I wanted more soft texture in my agnolotti. Vodka sauce was good but not enough on the plate. The squid ink pasta tasted very crab forward and needed so much more sauce to make the flavors marry. Drinks were ok. Expensive for what you are given. We spent about $200 that night on five plates, 2 glasses of wine, and one cocktail. That may be normal for New York standards but we felt it was not worth the cost. Appreciated the service and energy so much but was not impressed by the food with the first impression.

We went here for restaurant week it still ended up being 100$+ per person and we all split a bottle of wine. The food was good, nothing super special I don't think I would do the restaurant week deal again. Our waitress's was very nice, I got the pesto pasta which was good but no meat or anything in it and it was 28$.. soo?? Don't think that's worth the price

Staff is very friendly and so welcoming! Cute ambiance and the drinks were great.. I ordered the squid ink pasta which is also good but it was missing a bit more sauce.. and we got the branzino and the piccata as well. And it was good! Thank you for a fun night!

Good food, well prepared. Our two-top was a little tight with our neighboring table. Bar Primi was guilty of a pet-peeve I have with too many restaurants. Overly-iced, watery cocktails without enough alcohol to justify the exorbitant prices. And I asked for light ice, and my tall glass was filled with ice top to bottom. I’d go back for the food, but I’d stick to wine.
