Hai Si opened a few weeks ago with all the enthusiasm of a new restaurant, and about half the preparation. We arrived expecting live music (a pleasant touch); the decibel level suggested they were auditioning for Madison Square Garden rather than serenading diners trying to have actual conversations. Our server seemed as surprised by the omakase format as we were, taking a leisurely 20 minutes to deliver our drinks—perhaps they were fermenting the sake themselves. However, once the omakase train left the station, the pacing found its rhythm and service became genuinely competent. The Spanish-Japanese fusion concept had promise, though the kitchen appears to have confused "fusion" with "confusion about sodium levels." Every dish—including what should have been delicate salmon nigiri—arrived with enough salt to de-ice a small highway. On the bright side, the vegetable karaage portions were generous enough to feed a small village and genuinely delicious, proving the kitchen has talent when it remembers that taste buds exist. While we appreciate ambitious new ventures, Hai Si needs to sort out its sodium situation before we consider a return engagement. The potential is there; the execution needs fine-tuning.

Food was excellent, over the top expensive for tweezer food though. Nigiri is $16 for ONE PIECE. The ambiance is great, love the vibe. Problem is the Aspen basement sewer smell. Needs to be fixed.

We really enjoyed everything about this new restaurant. The food was amazing so it’s hard to say if it was overpriced, but it was certainly expensive. We definitely recommend and will be back, just maybe not as often as we’d like to.
