34 is Chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant dedicated to the cuisine of his Portuguese heritage. He was inspired by his late mother, Hilda, who influenced his interest in cooking when he was a child growing up in Fall River, MA. The 245-seat restaurant is adorned in shades of green – Emeril’s signature color – wood accents and ornate Portuguese tiles. A painting of a rooster, a national Portuguese symbol of good luck, greets guests at the entrance. Once inside, a jamon bar with countertop service and tile-clad DJ booth are focal points of the space. The restaurant celebrates not only the food and design of Portugal but also the sounds, with music from local and touring DJs.

The evening begins with a nod to Portugal’s coastal soul: a vibrant tin fish course, adorably plated and far from humble. This briny, umami-packed starter is perfectly paired with a chilled glass of Quinta da Pedra Alta Reserva Branco Reserva. As the conversation deepens and glasses are refilled, the second course arrives — comforting, handcrafted bites that bridge Iberian tradition with rustic elegance. First, there are jamón croquetas, crisp and golden on the outside, giving way to a creamy, savory filling of aged Spanish ham and béchamel—rich, indulgent, and irresistible. Beside them, the beloved pastéis de bacalhau—salt cod fritters—bring a taste of Portugal’s coastal legacy, their crisp shells giving way to a fluffy mix of cod, potato, and parsley. The Quinta da Pedra Alta Clarete steps in with its refreshing and aromatic qualities. This wine, made from a blend of red and white grapes, delivers bright fruit notes of berries and citrus, with a light herbal finish. Its crisp acidity cuts through the richness of the croquetas and cod fritters, while its fruit-forward character complements the grilled vegetables, making it a versatile and elegant match. The dishes get bigger and the wine gets bolder as you move on to a choice of paellas and proteins. To complement the diverse and flavorful options, the Quinta da Pedra Alta Melhor comes in with gusto. Its deep red fruit flavors and elegant tannins pair beautifully with the richness of these dishes. Whether you choose the bold, spiced piri piri chicken, the delicate shrimp San Miguel, or the hearty cataplana, the wine enhances the meal with its complexity and smooth finish, highlighting the depth of both the food and the wine. To round off the evening, we indulge in a glass of Quinta da Pedra Alta Vintage 2020 Port, a rich and complex dessert wine. This Port, with its notes of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice, perfectly complements the sweetness of the desserts. Beautiful restaurant inside. Service started off good and then fell off a cliff. Food was different but tasty. Not outstanding but fine. Cost wise, I wouldn’t say it was really worth it. 115.00 lunch and we weren’t astounded. With so many other options in NOLA, we won’t rush back to this one.

A fabulous restaurant in a city of great restaurants. Great twist on old Portuguese favorites. The selection of wines is absolutely on point with lots of great offerings by the glass. This will become an obligatory stop for me when in NOLA

The manager, Joe, made sure we had the most exceptional experience. We were celebrating the birthday of a dear friend and he went above and beyond to make her feel special. This was our second time at the restaurant and our second time being seated in Lauren’s section. I can’t imagine having dinner here with anyone else! She is so kind, friendly, and funny. She is as amazing as the food!

Everything about our experience last night at 34 Restaurant was outstanding. From the moment we walked in and saw the striking decor to the greeting we received from the hostess ,server ,and dining room manager ,we couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The menu was stocked with interesting and authentic Portuguese dishes. Everything we had was perfection. The cocktail list and wine list was over the top and we loved the Portuguese sparkling rosé, and the Sangria that accompanied our meal I would highly recommend to anyone tourist or local that they give 34 Restaurant a try.

We absolutely loved the Portuguese food- we followed the suggestions for our selections and had empanadas carrots potatoes pork sandwich then the duck orange rice and steak. Absolutely fantastic service and food.

As a local excited to try this new spot, I was hoping for a smooth experience, but it fell short. Despite having a reservation and being on time, I was seated 20 minutes late. It took quite a while just to get drinks, and the loud music made it hard to enjoy the atmosphere or conversation. I want to support new places in the neighborhood, but they’ve got some kinks to work out before I’d consider returning.

A real taste of Portugal. From the cod fish appetizer, steak entree, and dessert. Everyone who worked there was attentive, knowledgeable and had great personalities. I really enjoyed it.
